Has 22LR prices bottomed?

@12Bravo20

Just for packing information...

70 boxes of Winchester .22 WMR will stack perfectly in a .50 cal ammo can, side-to-side, front-to-back, and top-to-bottom. No room left for even a single extra round.

Two layers of 28 and 1 layer of 14.

It's a beautiful sight to behold!

Yeah but I am old cranky and disabled vet that can't pack too much weight anymore. Plus my days of carrying full 50 cal ammo boxes are way in the past. I carried plenty of ammo for the M2 and M60 while I was in the Army. I spent most of my time as junior enlisted (E1-E4) having the M60 as my primary weapon. Plus I always had to help carry the 50 cal ammo for the vehicle mounted M2.

Ok. Stopped by Sportsmans on way to dinner. No buckets of Remington Golden Bullets. Aquila was the only brand there in boxes of 500/525. Those were starting at $40.00

There were boxes of Federal in 325 quantities and they were $24.99

Lots of manufacturers of individual boxes of 50 and sleeves of a 100 at the going rate or just below of we’ve seen over the past couple of years. CCI’s wares were well represented. I passed on purchasing any ammo and gave our young waitress with the pleasant smile a $40 tip instead. Doubt she will blow it on those Aquilas.

The super cheap prices may be true for the bottom of the barrel ammo, but I'm waiting/hoping for large quantities of good ammo to return. I like to hit what I'm aiming at at distances over 25 yards and KNOW the ammo will actually go "boom"...or at least "pop". If anyone ever gets a line on SK Biathlon Sport, Lapua OSP or Lapua Pistol King...please, let me know.

This Federal has been around $.06/rd for quite some time. I have their "+" membership so the delivered price is about $325/5250 rds that's about $3.10/box 50. The "inflation calculator" says a box 50 for $.69 in 1967 would be $6.32 today. We are still ahead on this singular item. Joe

I think that all ammo and reloading supplies have reached their new normal. Prices are a little higher than a few years ago and that will hurt a little for a while. But people forget that as earnings increase the amount of time we have to work to pay for all consumer items has decreased over the years.

Prices are a lot higher, but of course so are many things, but this isn't the "new normal", things haven't settled down yet. Could be worse, could be better. Primers don't cost four times as much to make as they did five years ago.

We are our own worst enemy, buying a "lifetime" supply instead of what we need. Prices will never go back until we quit over buying.

Kind of crazy that a brink of .22s is pushing $20 and primers are still hovering near $100 per K at most places. Even during 2017/2018 when prices bottomed 22’s didn’t go too far below $20 for 500 and back then I buying 1000 primers for $25. Weird.

We're still suffering from the law of supply and demand for primers. Seems like it's just recently you can even find primers in stock online, and I've yet to see any in the brick and mortar stores. Once the market is flooded they'll slowly come down, although I suspect as soon as they do they'll go out of stock again. There's a lot of us waiting, and we all have a specific number we're willing to pay but $90/k isn't it.

I'm not exactly "in need" of .22 ammo right now, but .... I'm considering building a 10/22, surely I'll need more ammo, and at these prices I really should stock up, right?

Sure.

I buy ammo through two schemes:

1. When I NEED it. If I don't have any and I want to go target shooting or whatever, obviously I'll go out and buy some to support that.

2. Stock up in "lulls" between shooting. If I'm out and about and I see a good deal, I'll buy a box or two at a time and add it to my "stash". In general, there's no specific "quantity", per se. I go by "ammo can". My minimum stock is "whatever fits in a .50 cal ammo can". I just consider that a reasonable reserve of ammunition to support any upcoming needs for target shooting, hunting, etc.

If I were completely out of something, then I'd consider a bulk purchase if I ran across a reasonably good deal to replenish the ammo can for it.

Beyond that, it's just a box or two once in a while when I find good deals at the local stores.

Here in Florida I've had a "lull" since 4th of July. Probably last until Oct 1 or so. I buy when there is "disposable $$$" which comes infrequently. Joe

I hit 10k in .22 now I'm buying .22 WMR since I just got a Super Wrangler. He needs a .22WMR semi auto rifle to go with it.

I wouldn't be doing much shooting if I only bought 22lr ammo by the 50 round box. I shoot a lot more 22lr compared to other calibers, especially in the last 3 years. I bought a Glock G44 in February 2020 and have over 20,000 + rounds fired through it alone. I also have a lot of rounds through my Kel-Tec CP33 and my three AR22 builds. The AR's and CP33 are used for target/precision type shooting and/or speed drills.

I checked some of my usual online sources, and had bulk .22 coming up at $0.06/rd. I don't know if that's "bottomed out" or not, but it was worth sending out some texts to shooting buddies of mine.

True.

It is summertime and 22LR demand is high. I foresee it coming down over the winter months.
I do believe supply and demand is at play.

Will be interesting to see where price trends after "summer demand" is over.

Earlier today I looked around the internet as a follow-up with my stop at Sportsmans yesterday.

I saw one place that had Rem Bucket O .22 Golden Bullets (1,400 in Container) at $80.00. Forgot to see if shipping was free. At that price I doubt it.

Cabela’s and Bass Pro each had them on sale at $10 off for $119.00 plus tax out the door.

My good friend just finished mowing his hobby farm. Heading over there in an hour on the bike and we're planning to go to a local, non-national chain ranch/farm store to look at canvas cowboy bedrolls. I’ll take the opportunity to amble over to the gun counter to look at .22 and .22 Mag prices.

That's $28.57/500 ($0.057/round) before shipping

Plenty of different brands of 22LR at $0.046 to $0.059/round shipped - https://ammoseek.com/ammo/22lr?sh=lowest&ekw=bolt action

Personally, since I have plenty of 22LR on hand to shoot, I am waiting on the sidelines to watch the price trend further with particular interest in "summer demand" decreasing demand side of supply/demand balance.

Today I picked up a couple 50 round boxes of Federal Champion 40 gr LRN for $2.99 each at Runnings, a midwest farm & ranch chain. They usually have Aquila and Armscor individual boxes at $3.50 to $4, but I haven't seen big sales on bulk 22LR.

SG Ammo has the bucket for $95, and free shipping with a $200 order.
