Has 22LR prices bottomed?

OK. Rode over to friend's house and we headed out to a large, non-franchise Ranch/Farm/Sporting goods store. They had all the ammo you could possibly want except for those Rem Buckets of Golden Bullets. Zero buckets to be had. Prices were on average high for all calibers across the board except for 9mm ammo. Once we finished in the gun dept we headed over to look at heavy duck canvas cowboy bedrolls. Of note: there was only one other customer at the gun counter filling out paperwork. No one showing anything. Guy was pressing me hard to look at something and was spitting out their price leaders. 5-6 employees behind the counter. One guy buying and no one else looking as we left.

I took some pictures of ammo prices so I would remember them. While this is a .22 ammo thread other stuff was in the pics so I'm including those as a data point for members since its current cost info as of today in the inter mt west.

Federal BYOB plastic container....22LR copper plated hollow point...36 grain...1,375 rounds per...$119.99 VALUE PACK

Remington .22LR Golden Bullet Brass Plated Hollow Points VALUE PACK...525 bullets in box...$49.99

Winchester .22LR...555 round box...36 grain Copper Plated Hollow Points...$49.99

Winchester Super X .22LR 40 grain Power Points...222 Rounds in a box for $24.99

Stopped at IFA. Here the prices were a little more reasonable. I bought two boxes of Remington Thunderbolts (500 rounds each) at 32.99 each. With tax it was $70.76 for 1,000 rounds.

Blazer .380 Auto...95gr...FMJ...$24.99 per 50 round box

Aguila .22 Super EXTRA Hollow Point...38 grains...250 per box...$19.99

Winchester Target and Small game .22LR...36gr...HP...333 round box...$24.99

CCI .22 Maxi Mag...40gr... Jacketed hollow Point...17.99 per 50

Rem 17 HMR 17 gr...50 round box for $14.99

Federal .22LR...40 gr...800 round 'Range Pack'...$69.99

At both stores all ammo of all calibers was stocked full to the shelf edges with few boxes missing. Retail staff complete a process during each shift called facing.... straightening the product on the shelves so it looks clean and orderly but also moving stuff around to fill the gaps...sometimes putting a like product in an open slot to make the shelves look fuller. This is why sometimes you end up at the register and something costs more than you thought because it was in the wrong place...it's not always the customer putting it there after changing their mind. It just didn't look like a lot of stuff was moving off the shelves as it was the middle of the day and facing had already been done and ammo was stocked deep and high at both stores.

Oh, only one store had primers in stock...Small Rifle Primers was only size available...sorry, didn't ask about cost or brand.

Post script: I had to come back to this post to add the following. IFA has REALLY upped their game related to firearms, accessories and ammo. Their gun department looked more like a Gun Store. I mean, they seem to have made a corporate decision to commit to firearms as a product line they will provide significant retail space to. Heck, they had about every aftermarket accessory you could buy for an AR. A large selection of safes, heavy plate steel targets for pistols and rifles, ammo out the yazoo to say nothing of what they had in physical inventory of firearms. I need to frequent this store a little more. It just seemed like they really expanded the firearms dept since the last time I came in.

Anybody else shop at IFA and think they increased their gun department foot print?

Well, we have certainly seen prices below $30/500 shipped and I am not sure if we have hit the bottom of current cycle yet.

The last home we bought, on short sale, was at the bottom of that cycle. Signs tell me we are not there yet for this one. Might not even be there by the next election but I would expect prices to rise for the usual election/panic buys as long as they can keep people worried.

Here in the Peoples Republik, yesterday I saw .22 LR Aguila 250-packs at $19.00, other brands going up from there. They did have 9mm at $15/box if you bought 10 boxes. I shoot a lot of 9mm, and I have been trying to get my 617 .22 LR to smooth out by shooting it, so I bought 500 9mm and 750 .22 LR.

It is a hassle to order ammo being forced to ship to an FFL, go there and fill out paperwork and pay the FFL their $10 dollar (or more) receiving fee, so if it isn’t a smoking on line deal I just buy locally.

I must admit that I have an absolutely stupid amount of .22 LR on the shelves, and an almost stupid amount of .22 WMR, so I really don’t need it. But I seem to find an excuse to buy it anyway. 😇

Stay safe.

I figure if I'm going to actually try target shooting, as opposed to my usual plinking, I'm going to have to step up my ammo game.
That's where I was when I started shooting NRL-22 matches, had to step up my game and didn't have an match ammo at all to start. Bulk Fed Auto Match? Check. Bulk Blazer? Check. Bulk Aguila? Check. Match ammo? Zero..........and of course it's around 45/50% more than it was three years ago.

I'm starting to get a good stock of .22 Match ammo.

Nice!

When Big 5 was getting rid of their stock of RWS .22 ammo, I went from store to store to store offering $3.00 a box for it. Almost every manager took my offer, so I now have two .50 caliber ammo cans full of rifle and pistol match.

I noticed that I even have a forgotten, lonely brick of Aguila .22 competition rounds on the shelf that I have never fired. (I think I need to get into rimfire bullseye soon!)

That Lapua Center X is good stuff!

At this time, I still have 4 bricks of Winchester Wildcats (40 gr. LRN) that I bought in the late 90s. I put them in some metal canisters with desiccant packs, then sealed the cans up with caulk and tape. Those boxes were bought for $10/500 rds. and I still use that $0.02/rd. price as a reference point.
Several years ago, between a Gander Mt. and an Academy store opening, I was able to get several types of bulk ammo (Win., Rem., Fed.) for less than $0.05/rd. I haven't bought any .22LR or Mag ammo in at least 4 years as I don't have a range that I can use.

As many of us advise, there might be very little warning about when the next ammo Panik will begin.
This is a very Grim (tragic) subject so it’s best just to have your own personal initiative— don’t wait around, seeking confirmation.

Dollar-cost averaging makes it prudent to buy ammo most of the time, if needed for a reserve, to help you avoid being “caught” during a sudden Stampede for the Credit Cards.

This is true.

I got caught short on primers three years ago. I should have stocked up as soon as I saw everyone buying up toilet paper.

Aquila Super Extra 38Gr HP and 40Gr RN has done well for me. It is right behind CCI as far as functioning and accuracy out of my guns.
cci and aguila are my go-to ammo for my go-to pistol, ruger sr22. prior to the great flu panic, the sr22 ate most brands fine, but not now.

Target Sports … He is ordering me some Aguila SV for $32/500 which I will compare with CCI.

FWIW while the CCI Std Velocity is my ‘go to’ 22LR (at least when not using something more expen$ive) … that Aguila does pretty well out of my Ruger-PR, groups @ 50-yrds.

Seeing this reminds me that I need to buy that group scannning measurement program, whatever it is called … as have a real old one called ‘Group Size Calc’, by Wilson (IIRC), but I have to manually measure a ruler (to get a ‘factor’ for every group calculation) every durn time I use the scanner … grrrrrrrrrrr!

I feed my guns whatever it is that they like. If they eat up the cheaper Remington bulk ammo and are hitting where I'm aiming, then I'm including that in my stash.

As for accuracy, my standard is "squirrel head shot". If it's capable of putting a hole in a quarter sized circle, it's good enough for me.

If I have problems in one particular gun with a given ammo, then I won't try continuing to feed it that ammo. I'll cycle it through something else. In this case, I'd RATHER shift away from such ammo entirely "just because". It's nice to have ammo that will cycle reliably through everything. But the bottom line is that when things are scarce, I don't care...I'll just be careful what I shoot in which gun.

At some point, I expect to buy some actual “Target” ammo, but at the moment, I need to shoot more, more than I need better ammo. I feel like the weak link in my shooting setup is still “the nut behind the trigger.”

It's a slippery slope 😁

If I am plinking at little steel targets and general paper punching, Automatch or TAC-22 works well. For precision shooting at 50 yards or beyond, you're going to be paying $6 or more a box for the good stuff.

I saw one place that had Rem Bucket O .22 Golden Bullets (1,400 in Container) at $80.00.

I could go for that .RGBs have always done well for me plinking except in one rifle years ago. However the last bucket I saw back in spring was a hundred bucks. We don't have the luxury of large chain stores here except Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowes because of our low population density. I prefer paying a little more than having to put up with the problems having lots of people cause.

I'm seeing them at 35/brick in my area so not super excited to stock up right now. I don't shoot much 22 these days so I'm not that worried about it.
