Has your range time been affected

With the shortage of ammo and reloading supplies has it affected the way you practice? I find myself conserving my ammo and trying to maintain my reloading components. I really hate to act like this but it might be prudent. I do spend a bit of time shooting my air guns though and I quite enjoy them. I hope this craziness ends soon but I’m not too sure it will.

Not yet. I have enough and don't see this as a long term problem. If supply continues to be short in the Fall I may change my plans.

there are at least 2 ways to answer your question

1) my range at my membership level, was 1.5 hours. with the shut down, and reopening it went to 1.0 hours.

now it has been back to 1.5 hours per member since about June 30th

2) i only bring one or at the most 2 guns to the range each week

set up time for loading the mags, setting up the target, shooting, sweeping up my brass (for reloading later this year) and repeat, i am actually only using up a full hour.

as far as ammo that i take, right now, it is all factory fresh, i have since day 1 back in February only taken about 100 to 150 rds, so that has not changed.

No doubt the current conditions have negatively affected range availability, ammo availability, and training availability and participation.

For me personally, I stocked up for several years back in the fall, but someone on here gave advice not to gloat about that because it's important to be considerate of people coming newly into firearm disciplines and they can't appreciate our gloating as much as we might ourselves. I don't personally have a reloading component shortage that would cause me to shoot less, but I am certainly locked out of adopting any cartridges new to me, at least in any significant quantity.

I do not normally shoot at formal gun ranges and certainly not indoor ranges, so I am not affected by closures or restrictions. I have to imagine these things affect the majority of shooters though.

What affects me the most is the decline in good opportunities to train. The two most likely schools or academies for me to train at are actually running their full schedules, but I am not willing to go. I attended three schools last year and this year it will very likely be none at all. I will just have to make up for it in 2021.

My indoor range time has been reduced, not because of my not having enough ammo, but when having to wear a mask my eye protection gets fogged up in the first couple minutes and I can't see what I'm shooting at! I'm only able to visit the outdoor ranges on the weekend.

The shortage is a given Trunkmonkey. I wanted to know how it has effected your practice. I personally have a decent stockpile and the ability to produce more But I’m not sure at what point a person should should sit on what he has Incase things really go bad.

I have plenty of ammo; what I don't seem to have is time.
WFH has easily doubled my workload.
And the range I prefer is a good hour's drive away.
And, it's in the high 90s every day, which is under inspiring (range does not open until 0900, when it's already 90º).

The shortages have cut down on the amount of time I loiter in LGS, though.

I reload lots of calibers and shoot black powder arms. The only thing is the private range shut down completely for a couple months and the indoor part is still shut till Sept 1 so far. I can shoot at home or at a gravel pit nearby to get 300 YDS but between the bugs the heat and my A-FIB I am limiting myself. Reloading and indoor pellet is keeping me occupied however.:D

I find myself shooting more .22 vs the center fire stuff now. Since I can still buy .22 and it's of course still cheaper. Have been working a LOT of extra hours though. So if I have to break out the loading stuff that will be a pain to find the damn time

Not yet. I shoot competitively so I regularly shoot quite a bit.

I have reduced my home range live fire and have restricted myself to mostly dry fire.

Still, matches eat away at the inventory and at some point I may have to take a sabbatical if things keep going in the direction they are.

With not much else to do I have been going to my club at least twice as much as I used to. So my range time has been affected quite a bit.

No effect on my shooting. I belong to two gun clubs and am in good shape component wise for reloading.
Been very hot...90°F+ just about every day the last two weeks.
Kind of forced me off the range last weekend after about 3 hours.

My range no longer offers a weekday membership ($200) cheaper and raised hourly rate to $30/hour. I'd like to support them and buy a membership but I don't know if they'll stay in bussiness. Masks are mandatory, phone call for permission to enter and only six lanes out of twelve open. The pistol permit classes are where they're making money now. They can't keep up with it lately. To save money and ammo, I go once a month now instead of two or three times.

I have an annual membership to the Iowa DNR ranges and they are still closed due to Covid. So yeah, I’m shooting less.

Once the ranges open back up I’ll probably be there once a week. I’ve got more free time working from home and I’ve accumulated quite a stash of reloads.

Nope. Actually been more often lately. A couple of times a week, or month since January of this year- sometimes solo, and other times with a buddy, or relative.

And yet another ammo shortage thread.

And yet you add to it by posting in it...:p

Steve Milbocker,
Like you I have altered my shooting a bit.
For convenience I belong to an indoor range a few miles away, otherwise it’s over an hour to the nearest outdoor range. After things opened back up going to the range was a bit of a hassle but it was nice to be able to go. Then “the silliness” happened and people started buying up everything.
I have changed my range hours so that I am there before they open.
The range has been crowded because half the range, 6 lanes, is being used for CCW and new gun owner safety classes.
The range is full of newbies and Nimrods teaching newbies...Nimrods that think everyone else can benefit from their vast knowledge as they yell instructions at their newbies...Grrr :fire:
But yesterday I was delighted that the ammo shortage has finally sparked a ray of sunshine...(standby for selfish statement)
The range wasn’t packed with people. There were several open lanes. It was nice. I could shoot without being crowded and rushed. There was a Nimrod there with 3 ladies he was “teaching” but the range wasn’t packed with a waiting line and people that can’t keep their distance.
Also, I am shooting a lot more .22 and less 9mm and .38 / .357. But that’s only because I haven’t been reloading. That changes today.
