My list of needs for a .308/7.62x51 AR

16" or 18" barrel( 16" is really what I want but I would settle for 18")
Chrome lined barrel and chamber
Uses Magpul Pmags
Under $2000 if possible
Adjustable stock or standard stock does not matter

That is it for my needs, now can anyone recommend an AR that they have fitting this configuration? Or maybe one that a friend has that they have fired?

Thanks for all the help!

DPMS or CMMG are in your price range, the others I know of aren't.

Check out CDNN's current catalog they have nice prices on the CMMG 16" and 18" barrel models.

I've the DPMS and I like it, its been 100% I did upgrade the trigger and I'm not sure if its chrome lined or not, never really paid attention to it.

The Colt SP901 is coming out "soon" and should be under $2k, with all the features you're seeking.

Otherwise a CMMG might be good, but the models I've seen are not chrome lined - either stainless on the 16" or nitride on the 18". Both good options.

DPMS is also worth a look, and can be had for $1k or slightly less in a variety of configurations. Very few of the DPMS .308s have a chrome lined barrel though.

My brother just bought an Armalite AR10 with an Eotech for about $1950 OTD.

The standard Armalite AR-10 doesn't take Pmags (or KAC pattern mags, aka original AR-10 pattern). They did just announce a new version that will take the more common KAC/original/Pmag pattern, but it apparently comes with a shorter warranty, and I don't know if they are on the market yet.

I briefly owned a Rock River LAR-8 and found it an odd mix. Good craftsmanship, but the use of the FAL mag seemed clunky at best, and the overall length and receiver length were both excessive in my view. Since it doesn't use the KAC/DPMS pattern for the Pmag, it doesn't mean the OP's requirements.

As today's designated representative of the FNAR Proponents Contingent, it is my duty to point out that you could get one of these and still have enough money left for sixteen absolutely flawless steel factory 20-round mags, within your budget. And it will perform, no BS, no break-in, no problem. ;)

Does the Bushmaster take magpul Pmags?

I tried the FNAR but with no BUIS it didn't fit my needs.

The current Bushmaster .308 is basically the same as DPMS and does take the Magpul .308 Pmags. That's a good suggestion that I should have thought of. I'd still compare it to the CMMG though.

The original Bushmaster .308, which is now being made by Rock River as their LAR-8, takes FN-FAL mags.

Your only options that I know of would be the Bushmaster ORC and the Armalite AR-10A: http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.as...Category=f4bd4a13-55d1-41aa-aea0-49488ec48776

DPMS doesn't have CL barrels. RRA doesn't have CL barrels and doesn't take P-mags. Armalite's other rifles besides the AR10A have CL but don't take P-mags... though Armalite mags don't cost that much more.

CMMG doesn't have CL barrels, but they do have nitrided barrels, which they advertise as lasting longer than CL barrels.

Properly nitrided barrels last longer than chrome-lined barrels and are basically equal to or superior in all ways.

DPMS once in a while offers special runs with chrome-lined barrels, but AFAIK none are in the normal catalog. I've seen some listed for sale at R Guns. They were around $1600 IIRC which is an awful lot for a DPMS.

As I said earlier, the Colt SP901 should be out really soon, and the retail price is likely to be slightly under $2000. If $2k is in the budget, that will likely be higher quality than anything else discussed here - its real competition would be the LMT MWS (a wonderful gun but typically $2500+) and the KAC SR-25 ($4k+? I dunno).

The newly released ArmaLite AR-10A is made to order for your needs. At $1550 it's well under your price point leaving a good amount toward optics. The life time warranty is a big plus and not matched by other manufacturers.

You also get a true forged upper and a AR-10 size RE, you don't get this with DPMS.

Another option would be the CMMG, reviews I've read are it's a good rifle.

I don't like the FN FAL, it's a little to heavy for defense and lugging around the woods, also the recoil is more harsh than an AR platform. That leaves me with Armalite, Bushmaster, and CMMG. I have owned a bushy for a while now and like it alot. The lifetime warranty on the Armalite is big, I like companies that stand behind their product forever ( I have a bunch of Rugers for this reason, that and they build their firearms like brick *****houses!). CMMG interests me but with nitride coatings being around for only a few years( from what I've read so far) I can't be sure about them.

So it comes down to Bushmaster or Armalite from the suggestions so far. My brother may he rest in peace, loved Bushmaster and is the reason I currently own one of their newish AR's. Being part of the freedom group worries me though. Armalite is not really Armalite, they are the new Armalite. It is a hard choice now with all the pros and cons.

Thanks for all the help guys, if you have anymore sugestions keep them coming!

Ever heard of a Glock? Nitride coatings on barrel and slide since they were introduced. Also HK started using nitride somewhere in the late 70's or early 80's. Now S&W uses nitride on their M&P pistols and some AR-15 barrels. The chemistry and durability has been proven for decades in auto and machinery uses, typically on gears and shafts.

I know this thread has been dead for a while but I figured I would add to it and state that the new Armalite AR-10A does have the lifetime warranty.

I have 6 of the 20 rounders, looking to get a couple 25 rounders. Where are you seeing them for $27?
