When the assailent is holding an 8 yr old little girl, I think the effectiveness of a scattergun is mitgated. I need a single projectile for the all important head-shot. I also like the AR better from a maneuverability standpoint.
While I agree that a shotgun is not ideal (and have neither a AR or daughter) I couldn't imagine me pulling the trigger on anything with a loved one that close to the line of fire. :)

I hear you loud and clear bro. I pray daily that I never have to. But if my little girl is a hostage, I will take that shot without question or hesitation. I practice that shot at every range session. My analysis based on my house is that is about a 10-12' shot. If continually practiced, I feel it is doable. And that ain't 'Mall Ninja' talk. :D

i like a shotty. i've only owned 1 AR it was a smith and wesson m&P 15 Not as reliable as a shotgun maybe i just got a lemon still i dont have to make sure my mossberg is properly lubed up and cleaned nice

Reading these posts, I cant help but get the impression that many of the posters in this thread put a whooooooole bunch of emphasis on the weapon itself, and waaaay to little emphasis on thier ability to use the weapon.

I havent read too many times where someone mentioned that they were "very proficient" , or "trained extensively" , or "went to the range often to practice with a gun" , or such.

12 Gauge Winchester 1300 seven shot capacity with five shot side saddle is for me backed up by Glock 9mm with sixteen shots and 15 round reload. It would have to be a very crazy SHTF situation for me to go to a rifle.

I grew up shooting shotgun and am very comfortable, quick and accurate with it. A range right near me throws skeets out to thirty-forty yards so it's perfect to use for practice if you don't mind getting some funny looks you can get in some quick reloading practice from the side saddle and beltbag full of shells. It's not the only practice you should have with your main weapon but it helps keep you familiar with it.

[Sarcasm]If it's a shotgun you don't have to aim.[/Sarcasm] Though I must add a shotgun is my personal choice, but only due to the thumptastic nature of a 12Ga. :)

Either!!!

Personally I use my Ar. But my rerason behind this is because thats what I have been trained on and know the best. I am a Marine and feel very good using my AR setup. So I say use which ever you feel better using. I Know either will work, but you have to hit your target under an extreme amount of stress. For me thats the AR, for you it might very well be a shotgun. So get out and train, under stress, and see which you are better with. Good Luck!
