So here is the deal. My girlfriend and I live alone in a condo, and both of us sleep in the nude. Our front door and garage are at the opposite side of the building and down a level with multiple rooms along the way. Our neighbors make a lot of noise (typically between PM and AM for some reason) so I do a lot of house clearings just to make sure the noise is coming from the adjacent unit, and not from our entry way or garage.

Typically when something goes bump in the night, she's the one that hears it and wakes me up to go check things out. It's completely dark in our room, and rather than fumbling for clothes I typically just grab my GLOCK (don't need light to find this) and start checking the house - in the nude.

I've often wondered what other people in similar situations do, take the time to put on some clothes or just go checking things out in your birthday suit? Also what would the difference be to a perp - between being confronted by a clothed person or a pissed off naked guy with a gun?

Mods - While a bit humorous, it's still a serious question - so please don't lock or delete this thread.

Exactly where do you intend to carry a phone, spare mag and flashlight? Got a light on your gun? Great! Phones all over the house? I don't think I'd bet my hide on being able to find an operating one when it was life or death. Got a full size mag in the gun and already know that most shootings are over in 3-5 shots? That's good reasoning, unless you also make note that many stoppages are due to magazines and almost every stoppage drill for a failure to feed can go the full route to dumping the existing mag and driving a fresh one home. Carry a spare.

Why would you clear your house instead of waiting for the BG to come to your prepared defended position? Grab your handgun, get the flashlight and stay put and listen. You're much better off doing that than putting yourself on equal terms with a BG in the dark.

Wouldn't even a cheap self-installed unmonitored alarm be a lot better than getting up in the middle of the night for every bad dream your partner has or imagined noise? Get an alarm and get a full night's sleep (heck, it will pay for itself in the additional rest you'll get).

Some velcro straps and you'd have a handy dandy flashlight hanger.....

Just have to get the balance right.

(Gawd what an awful visual!!!)

How about a robe on the back of the door?

I'd recommend slippers by the bed because if someone broke glass to get in it could get awful messy on your feet.
And please post pics of your girlfriend when she wakes you so we can make a proper threat assessment.

Thanks, this is good feedback - I'll try to clarify/respond to a few things...

It's a G35 with a TLR2 mounted to it and a full mag - I know stoppages happen, but I've never had a single issue with this pistol. Next to where it's kept I usually I have a G26 (it's my CCW and gets placed there when I take it off, the G35 is my primary home defense pistol) and in the next room over I've got a GP100 if I need a backup 100% guaranteed to work.

Her cell phone is typically on it's charger in the bedroom, and mine us normally on a charger in the living room - we don't have a regular land line. She's usually sitting up when I come back to bed, and I know for a fact if she heard trouble she'd be calling 911 while grabbing one of the backup guns.

I could sit and wait but that would mean giving somebody free roam over the rest of the condo, and that ain't gonna happen. I realize I'm putting myself at risk by doing a full clear of the place, but I'm not going to sit tight while somebody ransacks my entire condo, garage, and vehicles. I could call the police and hold up in my room, but every time I've ever tried to contact the police it was a complete waste of time (I've been attacked at work, called the police, and waited for 4 hours for them to show before giving up and going home).

I've thought about looking into these, and it's sounding more and more like a good idea. We have a buzzer for when the garage door opens up - but nothing on the front door or slider. Being we're renting I can't make any permanent additions, so hopefully they have something I can employ that works wirelessly to a range of ~100 feet.

I do it on occasion (sans the stiffy), and I always consider it an added piece of motivation for me to succeed: If I fail, 12 random people in my community will have to endure a series of crime scene photos of me in my birthday suit!

Jesus, Ric, I just pulled a muscle laughing.

That said, it sounds like an alarm system is sort of an option - have you tried taking it up with your landlord? They might actually consider it a good investment, and potentially even help you pay for the system.

I have to admit, though, it sounds like you have a pretty solid plan. And if the handgun alone doesn't make the BG cry, being confronted by a naked dude with a gun definitely will.

Pair of gym shorts by the bed if you're worried about a burglar getting a glimpse of your giblets. Or the aforementioned pajama pants.

On the other hand, if you forego the shorts, you could use your crack as a spare mag holder...

Lemme get this straight - you do house clearing *naked*?

Are you expecting a break-in or home invasion by the local Hooters girls?

If not, invest in some tactical slippers or spec-ops flip-flops and a robe with a couple pockets for an extra mag or two, flashlight, and cell phone. It shouldn't take you more than a couple seconds to toss on a robe with a little more storage for those other important items and something to protect your feet.

You can get motion sensor systems that sit on the table and face the entry points. Ad a motion sensor on the doors and windows themselves and get a good night's sleep.

BTW, folks, let's remember that this is a site that whole families visit. "Gallant Reflex" humor isn't appropriate or germane to the discussion.

I already have the spare mag and extra flashlight sitting in the drawer with my GLOCKs - you're all probably right it wouldn't take much to throw them in my robe... I'll take a look at that tonight, and find a place close to the bed to hang it.

Wow. Clearing the house naked? You Sir are bad
All BS aside, that's the reason I sleep in a T-shirt and shorts with pockets. I can roll out of bed with my P-3AT already in my pocket, grab my G30 and SF Z2 and go do what I have to do. :scrutiny:

A pair of boxers or sweat pants by the bed would be handy and since time is not critical it would be no big deal to climb into them.

This way IF you need to step outside of the domocile you wioll not be called in to the PD.

I could call the police and hold up in my room

You could do that and stand a good chance of surviving, or you could do the exact opposite of what is taught in almost all personal defense classes and put yourself at extreme risk of getting killed or maimed as you walk around with a gun in your hand. Attire is irrelevant.

In training simulations that are attended by only by trained professional instructors (invitation only), the people "clearing" "survive" only on the rarest occasions--and they are among the best there are in that game.

Even top-flight LEOs whose job involves clearing buildings say they won't do it except in the performance of their duties.
