Simple question - Do you own more than one gun in the same caliber? If you answered yes - then why?
(BTW - I do also. Each has it's own particular feel, They're like close friends, they're nice to have around and make me feel comfortable).

If you answered yes - then why?

Because AK's are like Potato Chips.... you can't have just one.

But seriously...

In my planning, I have firearms where a caliber is good, but not necessarily the platform. For instance... 308 winchester.

The caliber works well for both deer hunting and for long-range shooting. However, I may not consider my hunting rifle as good a platform for long-range percision shooting as I would a bolt-action built for that purpose. So it isn't unreasonable to have both.

Yep, got two pairs: Mossberg 500 and Stoeger Condor 1 (12 Gauge)
and: Yugoslav AKM and Yugoslav SKS (7.62x39)

similar to what JWarren said...I own an FAL and a custom mauser chambered in 308. I know I know "308 and x51 aren't the same!" but the thing is, the FAL only gets fed mil-surp (when I am feeling rich...) and the Mauser only gets fed handloads that are actually a bit below SAAMI pressure specs as she seems to shoot loads a little below max.
also have two 22 rifles....nylon 66 and a 10/22

before I thinned out my herd also had 2 chamberings for 30/30 and 357/38...

Different platforms: HK vs. Springfield in .45

Different barrel lengths: GP 100 in 4" and 6"

Handgun/rifle compatibility: Ruger Blackhawk/Winchester 94 in .357
Magnum Research BFR/Marlin 1895GS .45-70

Two of the exact CCW in case something happens to one of them.

Lots of reasons to do so.

I have a Colt 1991A1 Compact and a RIA M1911A1 G.I. both in .45 ACP (that's the only caliber besides a .38 super that should be in a 1911 IMO)

The Colt is mainly for CCW and the RIA is more of a range/HD gun, although I have carried it concealed a couple of times. Ammo is the same and if i need to use that larger mags from the RIA in the Colt, no prob.

I like to build a defensive handgun battery where the operating controls are similar and easy to transfer from one gun to the next, vice having a 1911, beretta 92, p7, etc.

I have two in .357. A 686 in 4" for all the reasons people buy that gun and a M19-4 in 6" because it's a classic and looked like it just came out of the box. I thought it would look better in my safe than in the dealer's case.

4 9mms
7 22LR
2 7.62x39
2 7.62x54R
2 12 ga

Why? Because the guns I like come chambered for those cartridges. And it sure does simplify logistics.

I've got a few other "loners" also.

2 12-Ga pumps
2 1911-A1's and a KP-90 Ruger (.45ACP)
2 Ruger SA .357Mag revolvers
4 .22LR's
2 .30-06

WHAT? I only have 1 .38Spl?...gotta fix that

I think ammo consolidation is a good thing in general (easier to arm yourself and others if the SHTF). But I also think you need to have different calibers for different purposes. I have more than one gun in 9mm, but I have other more and less powerful calibers in short and long guns for various purposes.

One other nice thing is that I have the subcompact and full sized versions of the same gun, and the subcompact can share magazines with it, which is nice.

More than one in the same caliber; .38Sp, .357mag, .45ACP.
If I wasn't so money challenged(read poor) I'd have quite a few more in other calibers. No real reason why except I like 'em:p

Because my Browning HiPower is, well, it's a Browning HiPower; but my Bersa Ultra Compact is sized for concealed carry (same size as my Kimber Ultra Compact). They're both 9mm, but they're for different purposes altogether.

Now if Texas ever gets open carry (that'll be the day :banghead:) the Browning goes on my belt every morning. Til then, it just gets to go to the range once in awhile.

Where is the minority?

I'd like to hear from the minority - why not and what're your reasons? Just curious.
