How much ammo do you have in your favorite caliber?

Never been a believer in mass accumulation of ammo. Whether buying it or building it. I have never liked my money tied up in inventory of anything. I don't have any plans to be a survivalist and the last one standing; totally fine with moving on to the next life where everything will be perfect. I figure I have about 500 rounds of 30-06 in case of a major event ending a structured society to assist in whatever I may need to do. I think my focus is to keep ammo and reloading supplies on hand during strange times to keep shooting and practicing my hobby.

Happy Thanksgiving y'all! For something fun today... How much ammo do you have in your favorite caliber? Just that one you love most. Let's exclude .22LR for this exercise.

For me, it's probably 5500 rounds in 7.62x39. I would guess that 9mm is a distant second.
IMO a better way to have posed your question could have been:
How many weeks/months/years of a specific ammo do you keep on hand?
Reason being (see earlier posts) folks shoot at different rates. The guy who posted some 303 British stash might say 10 years supply but only 3 months of 30-06.

True, but then it would hardly be someone’s favorite caliber, or the most shot anyway.

I only have that much 7.62x39 (which is a lot for me) simply because I stocked up on Barnaul/Bear once it was announced the importation would stop.

A complicated question.
I'm pretty sure I don't have a favorite caliber, per se; if I have a caliber, it's because I like it.
So, I generally keep buying the ammo--when it's a good price--and fill up ammo cans with it.

Right now, as I start to think about putting together the ingredients for my Thanksgiving jambalaya, I have only two calibers with less than a couple hundred rounds on hand. Only have 225 rounds of 30carbine, and 125 rounds of 243.

Ok, just looked, if feels slightly absurd that I have 500 rounds of 25acp on hand :D (man that was a good trade, though )

My favorite caliber, .45 Colt, none! Because I don't own a revolver in that caliber at this time, something I'll have to remedy soon. Here we are also limited as to the number of cartridges we can store, depending on caliber. A lot of calibers are limited to 1K rounds per gun. Some calibers, like .22lr, even .300 Blackout, or .44 Mag aren't limited, while .357 is limited, go figure... Nobody ever said gun laws were intelligent, anywhere. You can't own a cartridge you don't own a gun for, but there are exceptions to that. Gun laws aren't simple either, anywhere, except when totally prohibited.
So, usually I keep around 400 rounds per gun, sometimes less, more .22s.
What I started doing, is when my cases start to split after many reloads, I condemn the batch to a last reload, to be stored. So, my numbers will probably grow to the legal limit.
Gil.

valnar: you realize that some people (who are law-abiding citizens) actually believe that one day 'somebody with a badge' or federal ID --might-- visit them because of their purchases of Lots of ammo.

I'm not one of them, but this concern is fairly common. This suspicion is seen on pretty much any gun website. Some of this might have begun with, or been influenced by the X-Files fantasy show and other similar entertainment.

My regular purchases have been enough to weather any ammo/gun panic: originally, over 12,000 rds. (--now partly consumed--) of 7,62x39 and due only because of the always- higher prices for .308, maybe 30% as much in .308.
Being an Extremely.... late bloomer with "battle rifles", I would have bought 6,000-8,000 rds. of surplus 7,62 NATO many years ago....so many gun regrets----:(

Im in the market for ammo......lets see, its all at my feet, under my desk....LOL!!

I have 8 box's of .308 at hand, most of a brick of .22lr and out of 12 gauge.

Caribou are moving through, so the .308 aint gonna last till April, and Ill be onto small game then, but birds soon after, in May.

Im due for more, after I have Xmas gifts outta the way.

5K in .223
6K in 9mm
4K in shotgun shells, just got into trap/skeet and really love it.
I do like my FN SCAR but sadly only have about 2K rounds, 1K in Malaysian NATO rounds I bought 35 years ago dirt cheap at a gun show in PA

I generally keep about 500 rounds loaded between 44 Special and Magnum. Probably should load at least double that in case I feel the need to do some plinking.

I try to keep 200 rounds for each different caliber I own. I am a hunter not a paper puncher so that quantity works well for me. 8 different calibers equals a pile of ammo. Then there’s components for each of them 🤭

I do keep an inventory of sorts on my ammo. Not “up to the minute” 100% accurate, my inventory is on the ammo I have “set back”.

Basically, I have ammo cans with some amount of rounds, say .22LR. If it’s ammo I’m accumulating for retirement, I have the box sealed and labeled. The content of my “sealed and labeled boxes are recorded on paper and in my phone.

I don’t do this for all calibers, just the ones I tend to accumulate for the grandkids, like .22LR or 9MM, and a few more.

I also have unsealed ammo boxes I use for “shooting now”. When they get low, I either reload more or I buy more.

I know folks say to rotate ammo but I am far from this ammo’s shelf life.

I feel lucky to have been able to strictly maintain a 5K minimum on .223/5.56

I used to maintain the same amount on 9mm @ $140/1K but I'm down below 1K and am gonna have to eat it. 16c/rd vs 24c/rd is a tough pill to swallow but it's better than it was and I shoot alot less rifle than pistol.

MK 262 5.56... 25.2 of AA 2520 on 77 grain SMK , 25.4 of CFE 223 , 24.5 of TAC , 23.4 of IMR8208XB ....most accurate loads on MK262 on a 20 " barrel 1:7 twist ...I shoot out to 800 yards with my loads ...no fails what so ever ! IMR 8208 with the best results in accuracy and velocity and groups hands down !
