ok folks, i will preface this by admitting that i was careless and lazy but heres what happened....

got stopped at airport security last week. lets just say a combination of many bad factors were not in my favour that day on my way home... i woke up late, packed quickly, missed 1 flight, got booked on another which immediately put me in th "SSSS" que at security as a security risk and got the full search.
security found 2 very small brass cased items (around 115gr in weight and about 9mm wide) in the bottom nook/cranny of my bag. needless to say i was shocked and they werent happy... apparantly the 2 items slipped out of a value box of 100 last week...well, the funny part was that i didnt get stopped on the outbound flight , it was on my return. the not so funny part was that the cops came. luckily, it was pretty low profile, they just asked me to step out of line so noone there was effected etc...TSA tohught it was pretty funny and realised that i didnt seem like much of a threat and the quantity was less than threatening. cops gave me a lecture and ran me thru the computer etc. they left and i appologised profusely. Head TSA guy said he understood it was an honest mistake but said in light of their failure at an inspection/test that morning he needed to write up an incident report. i asked what was going to happen, he said probably a mean letter from DHS and possibly a fine..i can deal with that , i messed up...i want to know if this could get worse? the cops walked away without doing anything but making sure iw asnt wanted...is a summons to court possible? loss of my LTCF?? again, i realise i deserve what i get but am hoping it wont be all that bad

Unless criminal charges were filed by the jurisdictional authorities (i.e. municipal, county, state, or federal/airport police) I cannot see how any further punitive action can be taken against you. If they were going to issue a citation, they would have done so on the spot. I highly doubt you will lose your concealed weapons permit. What state/airport were you in at the time of infraction, by the way?

The only "dumb" thing you did was live in a police state. It's all right. You're among fellow "dumb" people.

As for repercussions, there likely won't be any that concern firearms. You will, however, likely get put on the Mobility Impairment Brigade's "potential terrorist" list with 200,000(?) other people. Many acts that wouldn't have caused anyone to bat an eye 60 years ago are now acts that instantly turn you into a red-eyed, bloody-fanged monster from hell.

Break out the tin foil because your now on a terrorist list somewhere.
IMO If they do make a stink about it I would contact some of the useless news outlets and ask them if they want a story about the stuff getting through security the first time. Sans your name of course.

Never_retreat, that's a contest Senorlinc shouldn't try to get into. I guarantee that he wouldn't win.

OOps

I accidentally packed my carving knives in the wrong (carry-on) bag once on the way to a pig roast. I was the chief cook and bottle washer for the shindig, but had to buy new knives when I arrived! I got a letter from the AUTHORITIES that, if in the future, if was ever found carrying knives aboard a plane, that I would be subject to fines. I haven't flown since.
My brother, a trained and college educated chef, used to entrust his tools-of-trde, his knives, to the cockpit crew when he flew before 9/11, and there was an understanding that people USE knives for more than terrorism. AH, those days.

Can't comment on the repercussions, but stories like this (I've read others) are why my firearms bag is exactly that, and never used for any other purpose and specifically never for traveling.

I can remember handing a cased 300 Winchester Magnum and a cased 10-22 to the First Class stewardess. She would put them into the First Class closet, and that was that. :)

A few years later I flew Teeny Weenie Airlines, and they required the cases to be put into checked baggage. The cases got filthy, but TWA coughed up about 50% of the cost of the cases. I still have them, but haven't taken a gun along when I have flown since 1999.:(

Next time, ask him why a federal bureaucracy has anything to do with a private airline industry.

No, Just kidding. DON'T DO THAT. :uhoh:

I think that any ticket has to be given in 48 hrs. They can hold you for 24 then have 24 to issue summons/ ticket. Sounds like you are free and clear.

I think you're OK from a civil penalty/criminal setup. I'm sure you're on some sort of list by now, though. Give them a few months to update their lists and try flying again and see what happens. See if you're denied boarding or if you get the "special" search on both directions of your test flight.

Seriously. You don't want to find out about problems like this when you REALLY need to get somewhere.

Good luck,

Steve

I used to be in the habit of tossing my keys into the basket at the airport security line. At Washington National (yeah I know it is something else now, but not then), a lady noticed that there was a cigar punch made out of a .45 shell on my key ring. She said I couldn't take it aboard. Ok, what do I do with it? Go back and retrieve your checked luggage, and put it in there. Ok, I say it isn't ammunition, see, (I pulled it apart), nothing inside, just a little punch. Nope, you can't carry REPLICAS of ammunition on a plane either. I removed it from the key ring and tossed it in the trash.

I also forgot to put my Cold Steel Recon 1 in my checked baggage in New Orleans. Fortunately, I spotted a friend who had several hours until his flight, and he retrieved his checked luggage and brought it home for me.

My son did the same thing in Las Vegas. He bought a little $10.00 bag, went back to check in, checked it with the Recon in it. No problem.

Busy people forget things.

why were the local leos called? You'd think if the call made to the station was accurate they'd have said "we'll be down soon" and leave it at that. Was the cop really that nasty? if so I'd at least send a letter of concern to the COP an honest mistake does not equal a severe dress down. Seems these days courtesy even with cops is quickly going down the tubes.

The only "dumb" thing you did was live in a police state.
Let me get this straight:

Live ammunition was found in his bag as he was headed to his flight. Security understood that it was just a mistake, laughed it off and made no big deal of the issue, save for the minimum report they're required to make and a small technical fine. You're free to go. Have a nice day.

And that adds up to "police state"?

Any questions?

Im pretty certain that youll be fine. (no pun intended)

Though if you get anything official in the mail, take it to a lawyer and have him/her read it to make sure.

Airport Security

I was going to the Little Rock, Ark. one time to pick up my son. I had been to the range that morning to shoot my
30-06. I had forgotten I had two empty cases in my jacket. They would not let me in the airport with them. I carried them outside and threw them on the ground. Bet they had a fit when someone found them!

No it's fine for now. But remember what happened in UK last year, about the poor little .22 LR that was dumped on the sidewalk. Boy they sh*t their pants. Wonder whats going to happen if they found TWO .30-06s:eek:

NO!!! NO!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! IT CAN'T BE HAPPENING! LOCK DOWN THE WHOLE ISLAND!!! LOCK IT DOWN NOW!!!!!!!!

And across the English Channel, the French heard millions of people screaming with fright, and immediately surrendered.

Brings up a good point ... using bags for travel that one has used on range trips isn't always a good thing ... We all get forgetful sometimes, stuff happens.

Returning from one of my last military deployments, I got nailed at the airport in Philadelphia ... the helmet bag I was using as a carry-on (that'd been given to me by an EOD buddy) didn't make it past a sniffer ... trace of explosives residue ... I was in uniform w/active duty ID ... Did I take this inconvenience (a half-hour of my life I'll never get back) personally? No. Does this add up to a police state? Opinions vary.

The obligatory Jefferson quote. Sigh. So breaking rules and getting fined represents tyranny? yeah, might be petty and no harm, no foul, but pretty sure there was a rule about taking loose live ammo on commercial airplanes in one's carry-on before the whole "homeland security" apparatus geared up ...

Yes. When did regurgitating founding father quotes become a substitute for reasoned arguments?

Tyranny won't happen overnight. It is gradual. With increasing gun control and other oppressive policies.

What happens when someone lies flat on his stomach and someone puts a pebble on his stomach every minute, at a constant rate? Sure, don't worry about em', they are just pebbles anyway, right? Well, try saying that 4 hours from now. Wait, actually, you can't say anything else, you have been crushed to death already.

Please let us not forget the quotes of our founding fathers. They are enlightened individuals, heroes beyond heroes, philosophers beyond philosophers, and great men beyond great men Their quotes contain the wisdom that we will need to survive into this brave new world.

When someone places the first couple of pebbles on his stomach, do you declare that he's being crushed to death? Or do you monitor the activity and act when the pebble count begins to approach a level that would cause a problem?

I'm pretty sure there's a fair amount of gray area to be explored between the extremes of "anarchy" and "police state".

Please let us not forget the quotes of our founding fathers.
No one said anything about forgetting them. I asked why you felt they were a substitute for reasoning.

We have been trying to keep the pebble count below painful levels for quite a long time now. Since 1964, when we began to be treated as untouchables by the liberal left wing.

So in reality, we and the NRA have been frantically working with shovels since 1964, trying to bail the pebbles off.
