If you could own 1 handgun and 1 rifle...

Whoa! Zombie thread! The OP's last post on this thread was back in March, and he was headed to a gun show to see what he could find.

Hoot, you out there? Whatcha settle on?

Haven't changed my mind from my first post. Used is the way to go. Noting that the handgun is for self-defense and the rifle is for general purpose, and looking at the prices I paid for second hand firearms in this category, I'd still opt for:

4" GP100 in .357 ($350) OR Glock 23 ($425)
and
Remington 700 in .30-06 or .308 (got a pristine BDL in .30-06 with Redfield 3-9X scope for $450)

Even buying the Glock you have over $100 left for ammo.

Ufortunately Ohio's (and my state of Indiana) have the following hunting regulation:

Gun Season and Youth Deer Gun Season: 10 gauge or smaller shotgun using one ball or one rifled slug per barrel (rifled shotgun barrels are permitted when using shotgun slug ammunition); or muzzleloading rifle .38 caliber or larger; or handgun with 5-in. minimum length barrel, using straight-walled cartridges .357 caliber or larger, or longbow, crossbow (draw weight limitations same as for Archery Season). Shotguns cannot be capable of holding more than three shells.

Unless he is headed East or West, the rifles do not have much of a purpose. A nice shotgun is always handy though.

OP asked about a rifle. If that's not an option, either a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 with a couple of barrels would be the ticket. Definitely a smoothe-bore vent rib with removable chokes, and likely a rifled slug barrel with cantilevered scope base. If you still have cash, add an 18-inch bead-sighted cylinder bore. Should be able to find one with at least two of the three for well under $500.

I'd go used due to the tight budget.

For pistol 45 ACP in either Glock or Springfield XD.
Personally, I'd want a shotgun before the rifle and go w Moss 500.
Per original post, if shotgun not allowed, for rifle either lever action 30-30 Marlin or bolt action .308 Rem 700.

You can't go wrong with a 308 bolt action and a Ruger 22lr pistol. The 308 is good for big game and varmints.the 22 covers almost everthing else

HardShell...

See post #75 of mine.:D

I really tried the first time around, but missed by a little.

The second time around, I missed by a mile!

How about that! My post count is .30-06!!

.

1 handgun for self defense/ home protection and one rifle for general use and were on a $1000 budget{I know, that would be hard} what would you purchase?

Colt 1911

Bolt action 22WMR

My Tikka T3 Lite Hunter in 270 Winchester (430.00 at WallyWorld) & My H&K USP Compact in 40S&W (520.00)

I haven't read through all of the posts so perhaps someone has already said this, but I would choose a Marlin 1894 and a Ruger Redhawk. Both have rugged, dependable actions and are chambered for the same ammunition. They can be used equally well for hunting and self-defense (no CCW with the Redhawk, though).

M1 Garand from CMP for $595 and a used M9 or Sig buy back. that is if ammo is not a concern. Ofcourse the garand can be modified to take most commercial .30-06 ammo and 9mm isnt too bad on the wallet.

Out of personal taste my choice would be a M1A and a H&K USP .45acp.While I enjoy many types of rifles including the FAL and AR the M1A is my fav for fit/accuracy /ammunition.

The USP is very user friendly for me being left handed,it is .45acp,and it just looks friggin cool.

Depends if I was paranoid and believed the end of the world or of society as we know it. If it was for defensive purposes, and possibly a small amount of survival, the choice is easy. A decent 357 magnum revolver and an AK variant in the 7.62x39 caliber. The AK, with SP loads, equals a good 30-30 which makes for a decent hunting gun. (Yes, I went deer hunting with one and it was quite effective). The 357 magnum revolver is the best all around caliber and handgun. Much less to ever go wrong with the revolver. Ammo is totally abundant in both 38 special and 357 magnum. And the varying ammo allows as weak as a 380, through the 45LC/ACP. Except for hunting calibers, there isn't another caliber of traditional hand guns that can do something on the high or low side that a 357 magnum revolver can't do. And this absolutely nothing to do with preference. It's a fact.

Now; if the reason for only having 2 guns was a law, and nothing to do with survival or a breakdown in society; or if it was because of financial reasons; my choices would change. For a rifle, it would be a 7mm remington magnum bolt action. It is the best all around hunting rifle caliber. Small enough for varmints with a 110 grain bullet, all the way up to moose and such with a 180 grain. And it can shoot further than most people can see. Even with a scope. There isn't one animal in all of North America that can't be taken with a 7mm mag. As for a handgun, I'd probably go with my SigSauer P220 45acp. Being we aren't talking survival, I wouldn't need the handgun for hunting or any use other than self/home defense. And personally, I believe the P220 to be one of the most reliable and dependable pistols ever made.

But I can't reiterating that if a survival or societal breakdown was part of the equation, that the 357 magnum revolver is the most logical handgun without exception. The ONLY advantages any other caliber or gun has over a 357 magnum revolver is not caliber related. It's things like more rounds in the magazine, smaller weapon, easier to carry, price of the gun, etc... When it comes to the caliber, there isn't one single other caliber used as a common handgun that can compete with the 357 magnum revolver. It can be small or big. It's the perfect handgun.

Since I started this thread and somebody asked:

He settled on a .39 S/W Special Model 10 blue snubbie An oldie but a goodie...I also gave him one of my .22 Marlin Rifles. Since he remained in Ohio{found teaching work here} these should fill the bill for now.
