if you were only allowed 1 rifle and 1 pistol what would they be?

Forget rifles and pistols, I'd take a bullethose if thats all the liberals would let me have:p

Easy

First you need to understand what my intrepretation of the SHTF is...

SHTF = Kaos to the point that extreme self-defensive actions are required. No calvary is on the way to save us, our life expectancy is in serious doubt, civil services are just about nonexistant, no food, water, or utilities are available, and things might remain in kaos for quite some time.

Choices?
Pistol = S&W or Colt mid-frame .357 Mag w/ 6" barrel
Rifle = .308 pump (Remington) w/ 2x7 wide angle scope

Reasons?

Both pistol and rifle need to be accurate, fully reliable, and easy to use. For defensive purposes I'll want to take out threats while they are still as distant as possible. Both weapons in the configurations described will do that.

Both weapons might also be needed for hunting (so I can feed myself and group when there's no other alternative but to hunt ). Both calibers are widely available in a variety of loads to cover everything from SD to small/large game hunting. (Although I'd really like someting a bit more robust than .308 if I need to take on a bear, I could if given the right load. Because of its combination of wide availability of military/hunting ammo, inherant accuracy, and easy of handling, it has to be .308).

Why a pump and revolver? They're simple, reliable, and if I'm taken out those remaining in my group will have no problem picking them up and figuring out how to use them. Ever seen anybody who didn't know (almost instinctively) how to use a revolver or pump? -- Maybe its in our DNA or something??

BTW, the question was rifle and handgun. Had it not been rifle, I would have selected a Remington 12Ga Shotgun (870 Wingmaster w/ mid length barrel).

The correct answer:

I'd pick whatever is the most popular for ammo compatibility. It might come in handy when we all go to solve the problem of only being able to own two guns. :)

If I could only afford to own one rifle and one pistol, I'd pick a CZ 452 American in .22LR and a 3" S&W Model 60.

"I think something in the M-14 platform for the rifle, and something in the 1911 platform for the pistol."

Ditto!

Well, I'd certainly keep my Nighthawk 1911. That part was easy.

For the rifle, that's tougher. I reaaalllly like my SIG 556, but there's a real visceral connection with my M1 Garand. :banghead:

first, i would buy a whole lot of large PVC pipe and some good shovels...paid in cash, of course.

after that, the only guns i would keep in the house would be (after some hemming and hawing):

- S&W .357 with 4" bbl, probably a 686
- Remington 870 with a couple different barrels

i think those would be my most versatile and reliable choices, though i would sorely miss having a semi-auto rifle.

Well, since YOU won't let me have a shotgun (either m590A1 or police 870 would have made me happy)...

M1 Garand and S&W 686 (7rnd, 3")

Why the Garand? Well, it's a hunting round for most anything I would want to eat, and it's an almost guaranteed man-killer, IN A TRIED & TRUE SEMI-AUTO BATTLE RIFLE! BOO-YAH!!!

As for the S&W 686... I love having a wheel gun in .357 since I can hunt small stuff with .38, bigger stuff with .357, and the chances of scrounging ammo goes way up when it's not a current military or LEO round. That, & a properly tuned tack-driving 686, with 7 rounds of top-notch .357 & a bunch of speed loaders, with a 3" barrel for at least some concealed carry if necessary...

Hey, if there is a better Jack-of-all-trades pistol, I'd like to see it.... and steal it from you!

However, my next dynamic duo would be the AK47 and my Glock 30SF (w/ a myriad of different length mags)

Depends are we still alowed to carry?
If not a CZ 75B/G19 second choice
If so a CZ RAMI/G26 second choice
Rifle
My winchester 7 mm mag

I live in the desert so my situation may be different than some. Wide open spaces, etc. I have to settle for a Norinco AK, Mod 84s. in 223 cal. and a Ruger P90 45 cal. The Ruger is a brick with a trigger that will shoot flying ashtrays all day long and the AK is a very dependable rifle for the desert sand and conditions.
