For a pistol it would have to be my 1911a1 in 45 ACP . Second choice would be my Taurus PT-92 AFS 9mm. Although the 9mm has mags with higher capacity the 45 still gets the nod for 1st choice.

The choice for rifle is:

1st-- Polytech M14s (w/scope & bipod) (reach out & touch somethin')
2nd- scoped Custom Mauser 98 .308/7.62 x51 cal. (M14 backup)
3rd-- Remington 03-A3 30-06 cal (an oldie BUT reliable!)
4th-- Colt AR15 w/20" & 16" uppers (availability of 223 ammo & AR parts)

IF......I really had to have a shotgun it would be:

Mossberg 500 12ga. w/2 bbls.- one rifled, one smooth bore full choke

OR

SPAS 12ga.

When all else fails a minigun will do!!

Well, if I were forced to choose two, after I recovered from my nervous breakdown I would have to pick my SA 1911 and the always present H&K 91

then of course the wife gets to keep 2, so she would keep her BHP and my 3 inch M60, so I dont have to part with it.

Assuming that the reason for the limitation was legislation, then for a long gun, I'd be mighty tempted to do what the Europeans tend to do; I'd probably get a drilling. Usually they are a SxS shotgun over a rifle barrel (12ga over 9.3x62 is one combo I've seen). Only real downside is slow reloading, and you're limited to iron sights so it's not the most ideal for an SHTF gun. But with that, one can hunt almost any game from quail to elk (depending on the rifle caliber). Considering that most game animals are taken at ranges under 100 yards the lack of optics probably wouldn't matter for most people. If ammo cost and availability were not an issue I'd love a custom 16ga over 6.5x55mm. However since those issues will probably dominate, 12ga over .30-06 (or .270Win) would probably be my choice.

If we found ourselves legally limited to only 2 guns, chances are handguns would have been eliminated from legal ownership along with EBRs. If that were the case, I'd probably choose a lever action carbine for my second gun. That would fill the home-defense/SHTF role reasonably, and would give another option for a hunting arm. I'd likely go for something like a .357 or .44mag, a .30-30, or possibly a Camp 45 or PC40 or similar if autoloaders aren't banned. Most likely I'd go for a .357mag lever action carbine as ammo is pleniful and cheap and a lever is almost as fast for aimed shots.

If it's for money reasons, I'd keep my Swedish Mauser and Ruger P944, and I'd sell the Turk Mauser and my wife's .38 revolver and my .22 (heresy to some I know, but that Swede just stole my heart). If it's 2 guns per person (rather than per household) my wife would keep the .38 and .22 rifle and only the Turk would go from the house.

But, even though money is tighter than I'd like right now, I'm currently working on increasing my gun collection, not reducing it. My priorities right now are to get a modern sporting rifle, then an EBR, then an HD shotgun. After that is taken care of, I'll be going after (in no particular order) a good CCW pistol for myself, another handgun for my wife, a lefty of ambi hunting rifle for my wife, more sporting rifles for myself (mostly bolt and falling block), a trap shooting shotgun, and numerous WWII era rifles.

Wow, I can have two more than I already have...

Uh...

A big one and a little one? :)

For myself, I don't know. But if I were recommending for somebody else, several combinations come to mind. In no particular order,

1- M1 Garand or M14 and 1911A1.

2- Winchester '94 or Marlin 336 .30-30 and choice of Ruger or S&W .357 sidearm.

3- Winchester '94 or Marlin '94 .357 and choice of Ruger or S&W .357 sidearm.

4- Winchester 9422 .22LR or .22WRM and S&W K-22 in matching caliber or Ruger Single-six convertible.

5- Ruger 10/22 and 22/45 if an individual don't care for anything not semiauto.

Of course, those combos could be mixed and matched at the individual's preferences.

Let me first say that I don't currently own any guns, but I am building an AR this summer after a whole bunch of research.
My choices are simple:

Handgun:
Springfield XD, I love the look, its a hi cap 9mm so ammunition is a plenty, and it has a trigger pull similar to a Glock but ergonomics closer to a 1911. Have not shot a 1911, but my hands are small so the ergonomics matter to me.

Rifle:
AR for modularity, weight, plentiful ammo and overall familiarity. Second choice would be a FAL or an M14. In an SHTF situation I would go with the AR because of ammo weight, and good stopping power within fragmentation range. Long range isn't really needed much in SHTF, why give away your position? Let them come to you.

In that I only have one gun total (Makarov) I would have to enter the fantasy world and from there answer this question.

1) Colt 1911 or Glock 17 with high-caps

2) Colt M16A4 Rifle w/m203 attach or Garand.

Ok, leaving the gun fantasy world and back to my regular fantasy world, bye bye.

cheers, ab

Since I wouldn't submit to a forced disarmament, I guess I would have to fall into a horribly dire economic situation to go down to only two guns (does that mean one has to be a .22lr :scrutiny: ). Well, I love my CZ452 Lux and have shot it every single weekend since I got it a couple months ago, but if I'm thinking of guns to defend myself with, I'd have to say my CZ75 compact (with my .22lr Kadet Kit ;) ) and my "soon to be delivered to my doorstep from the CMP" service grade M1 Garand :D . Shooting wouldn't be as much fun without a bolt-action though :( .

action barbi Hope the Makarov is working out for you. Once I get my M1 cleaned up and sighted in (could take a while  ) you are welcome to try it out, although I can't help you with the Colts or the Glock ;) . Just PM me if interested. We could meet up at Angeles Range and hunt steel targets :D .

Let me get this straight... it's two guns per person, right? Me, my wife, and my two sons? That get's us up to eight.

If that were the case, I'd get social security numbers for the dogs, the cats and the fish. :D

I'm with TrapperReady, except for the part about the cats. We don't need to be arming cats. Remember that sniper kitty picture that came out? Besides, I don't think their saliva works all that well as a powder solvent, and all that licking would just strip the blueing.

At least the dogs would bring the guns to you, rather than turn them against you.
