If you were to move to a PRO-GUN state, which one?

I have to put in a vote for Kentucky. Horses, bourbon, women, guns, lots of beautiful space, what more could you ask for?

I truly believe that we are of of the most gun-friendly states in the country. No restrictions on machine gun ownership, no "assault weapons" restrictions. We have castle doctrine. Open carry is unrestricted. Concealed permits are "shall issue." We have the biannual Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot!!!

All that and some of the best (in my opinion) recreation in the country. We have trails, lakes, and caverns to mention a few. Parks galore with many great lodges sprinkled around. I wouldn't trade it for any state!

Maine Best if your rich as jobs at a living wage are hard to come by.
Add to that the fact that Maine has even higher taxes than Mass and it gets even less attractive. I used to live there (Saco) and its a nice place, but the taxes are brutal. My in-laws still live there and we go up about once a year for a visit, so I'm thinking about getting a non-resident Maine CCW license. Which brings me to the other problem with Maine. Zero reciprosity. If you live in Maine and travel at all, you pretty much have to get some non-resident permits. New Hampshire is not all that much better in that regard. Fortunately, Florida has non-resident licenses accepted in about 30 states and a lot of people just do that. The only downside is that New England is a tough nut to crack without collecting a bunch of license, because NH is the only New England state that has reciprosity with anyone to speak of.

Florida isn't perfect, but very few states are. I personally like the lax gun laws here, plus I enjoy the warm sunny weather here year round. Then again this is coming from a guy who moved from Chicago 4 years ago so maybe I am just too fortunate ;)

[Sarcasm]Maryland all the way. No concealed carry permit needed (just don't get caught), open carry everywhere (again, just don't get caught)! Okay, the only thing this state has going for it are half way decent schools and the Chesapeake Bay.[/Sarcasm]

I've recently purchased property in West Virginia, which I'm surprised no-one has mentioned yet. Open carry state, with a shall issue conceal carry law (although the reciprocity for non-resident out of state permits suck and they don't offer a non-resident permit themselves), lots of places to shoot, cheap property and property taxes. On the downside the schools aren't great (but I plan on home schooling), and poverty is fairly prevelant, with low income levels.

Northwest Arkansas

We have lived here in Northwest Arkansas for 5 years. Prior to that we spent time in Wis., Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas. This is by far our favorite place. We have a rifle, pistol, and trap range right here in our little community. The community is called Bella Vista. Schools are great, fishing is great, and the cost of living is as low as I've seen anywhere. Send me your address and I'll ship you out a relocation package. I'm at [email protected].

F- That is what we are striving foe- I think you should have to pass an test to qualify for entry into FL. Speak english, not be from NY, drive without your blinker on, own at least one gun...etc. To many yanks and such comming to our state.
Same here in MS, they come here and B**** about every thing and want to change us like it was up north.

Fixed it for you.

I have always dreamed of living in Alaska, but I doubt that I would have the money to live the lifestyle that I would want.

I live in Oklahoma right now and we have reasonable gun laws, also the EBR think is popular here, we are nicely well rounded I think.

So Oklahoma is my vote, we need more people to help change the laws anyway?

If you live in Alaska don't they pay you after awhile? seems pretty sweet to me- minus the whole snow thing 9 months of the year

Let's face it. If you avoid California, Hawaii, Illinois, Wisconsin, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachussetts, you're in reasonably good shape. That leaves 40 other states to choose from.

Kentucky

I have to echo what WeThePeople said. As far as gun laws go, Kentucky is one of the best. In addition to what he said, we have no restrictions on ownership or purchasing other than stuff that's already federal law (felons can't own, contiguous state long gun purchases, etc.) Our restrictions on where you can carry are pretty short. Unless you're a lawyer, lobbyist, or government worker, the only restrictions you'll see are bars ("Any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense beer or alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to that purpose;") and schools (doesn't apply to colleges though.) Signs at businesses have no force of law, you can disobey at will. Unlicensed open carry is fine, and I've done it without problems.
We also have legislators working on a lifetime carry license. I spoke to one of the sponsors (my state rep) and she said she's confident it will pass.
We also have prohibition on confiscation at any time, unless you're violating a limited set of laws (illegal carry, murder, illegal hunting, etc.) There does not need to be a declared state of emergency for it to apply, but the law does explicitly state that it still applies during one.
You can shoot in your back yard (outside city limits of course.) I have a friend with a range that we shoot at weekly.
We also have statewide preemption. And I've never heard of any city trying to change that, although it wouldn't surprise me if Louisville wanted to.
And now for the best part. As people have said with Colorado and other states, there's concern that the Democrats are going to take over the state legislator and undo it all. Well here in KY, they've controlled the legislature for most of written history. They're partially responsible for our great gun laws :)

West Virginia is real good as far as guns go. You can carry about everywhere you go. No restrictions on what you can own. No waiting periods. Schools are not as bad as the poster above stated. Income levels are a little low and not a lot of jobs in my part of the state (southwestern). Low crime rates. Land is fairly cheap. All in all not that bad.

Montani Semper Liberi

I have lived in Texas, North Carolina, Virginia and Ohio. I was born in West Virginia.
There have been many great posts in this thread. The number of outstanding states mentioned is a testament to the amazing nation we have created. As for my two cents, I can say there is hardly a more pro-gun population than in West Virginia. There is some conflict over this in the northeast as well-meaning if misguided people from Maryland are funneling across the border to escape the People's Republic. Many West Virginia schools still let off for the first day of deer season and you can still see folks with rifles in the back window of the truck. As a matter of fact, when I was young (not all that long ago), every kid I knew had a rifle or had been hunting. On a recent visit to see my brother, we fired pistols and rifles in his front yard for almost two hours without a single complaint. With that said, and with all respect, there is some growing hostility to people from northern Virginia and Maryland who are coming to the area and bringing their leftist politics with them. It could get ugly as this recent, and witness-confirmed, incident shows:

A West Virginia man was driving along in his Silverado when a BMW yanked in front of him at close range and began swerving. It had Maryland license plates. The BMW felt that the mountaineer was following too closely and slammed his brakes. The mountaineer felt hitting his gas was a good response. He smacked the back of the Beamer. Then the BMW guy became very hostile and did it again. In true mountaineer fashion (god bless 'em, every one, Tiny Tim), the Silverado responded by hitting his gas again. The Beamer operator yanked to the side of the road, got out, started cussing about how he hates these "rednecks" in the state, and approached the vehicle. He then yelled at his wife about how "frustrated" he was (boohoo) and punched the rear window out ON HIS OWN CAR and threatened the mountaineer. The mountaineer promptly called to his wife lovingly, "Honey, fetch the pistol, I'm going to shoot this SOB." The Maryland guy said, "I'll call the cops," to which the Mountaineer responded, "Go ahead. They'll find your body and the broken window and we'll talk about how out of control those poor Maryland folks are." Then the Maryland guy calmed down and went back to the Republic.

Ok, I'm a little prejudiced. But West Virginia is full of truly great people who will give anyone a chance as long as you remain polite. Also, West Virginia switched from Democratic to Republican in the Presidential election for the first time in over 50 years for what many think was solely the gun issue. Montani semper liberi.

Nine months? I sometimes think there are more myths about AK than about firearms. It's a huge state, with a very wide array of climates. SE and the islands aren't very snowy at all. SC ranges from four to six months of winterish conditions. The state isn't what people expect.

But I don't know why I'm telling you this. Never mind!

Hi, Almost Heaven, I'm in the Eastern Panhandle of Wv and jobs are plentiful, but so are illegals ! If only Byrd would give it up and let in some new blood, He brags about serving 6 terms in the senate yet the state is 50th in just about everything ! Rockefeller is no better. But Still it's " Almost Heaven " for us pro gunners ..........WVleo

I would question if you can speak English as your spelling is pretty atrocious.

So the mountain man rammed the car in front of it and then threatened to shoot the occupant? Thats not exactly the place I would want to move to. Your sad attempt to make the Mountaineer appear as the good man is really shallow. And just to point out that this anecdote is nothing but an unverified anecdote meant to portray the rural occupants as noble people and urban people as heartless monsters. It is a sad pointless attack at that.

I knew there would be somebody who would come out senselessly swinging over that. That's ok, I can take it. Tecumseh, you should really learn to read carefully before you comment. I have personally seen the disdain that many urban people, who come to occupy rural areas for their "scenic views" and "country living" heap upon locals. Even worse is when they come with a mind to scold. And you are bet your itchy sweater vest right that I am on the mountaineer's side. Thank you for calling me shallow from the safety of Illinois. You know nothing about me, and I would appreciate if you have something negative to say that you would think first. But like the fellow in the Beamer, you started raging without thinking. Montani semper liberi. God bless shallow people, every one.

"That's not exactly the place I would want to move to." You are correct, sir. Please continue to exercise your right to stay away.

Arizona would be my pick.

The big cities in Texas are getting pretty bad; I don't even want to go to any of them anymore except Austin and San Antonio. Except for a few really nice geographical regions of Texas, like the Hill Country, the rural life is a little too dormant for me.

I don't think what that mountaineer did was appropriate. All he did was escalate a situation.

A few years ago this guy got really upset with me on the road. I have no idea why; I didn't pull out in front of him. I just ignored it because he had a problem and I didn't. Sort of the same thing happened a year or two later in another town, when a bunch of cars were fighting to merge into a small lane. I didn't do anything wrong, still got honked at. Who cares? If someone's mad at me for no reason I'm not going to let them control my emotions.

upstate NY is not that bad, you just have to stay 150 miles away from the city. if you own your own land, no one really bothers you. Stick a pin in Syracuse and make a hundred fifty mile circle, out side of the circle, it's like moving to a different world, different laws, people, ect.

Avoid Wisconsin!

+1

I'd also add **Avoid Illinois** to the above... I get the best of both - I live in Wisconsin and work in Illinois :banghead:

The only two states in the entire union that have NO CCW of any kind - even California has us beat on this...sheesh
