Illinois Oppression

So maybe 11th worst; we're pretty close to Wisconsin and Iowa as far as gun laws go.

Respectful objections here Trent. I am a refugee from IL to WI and I found it a very refreshing breath of freedom to be in WI. I now own suppressors, machine guns, SBRs and have at least medium to above average CCW "privileges". No FOID, walk out with long arms, still a waiting period on handguns but legislation is in the works to eliminate that. Not even close to Illinois violations of the constitution.

You don't mind the FOID until a something like suppose a natural disaster, a radical change in government law or policy happens and a crackpot polititian orders to police to every firearm owners house in full combat gear to forcefully confiscate their guns.

Unfortunately any kind of registry is usually the first step before initiating an action. While that action is not 100% known if past history and current events are any indicator, for firearm owners it's not good.

On the extreme side it sure wasn't good for the jews either.

I was unaware that WI was an NFA friendly state! I hereby retract my comparison. :)

yep, ONLY FORTY THREE of our FIFTY states are more welcoming to gun owners. That's like saying if you were required to amputate a finger, you wouldn't miss your pinky too badly....rather than movng somewhere that doesn't mandate such amputations
We are fortunate in this nation to have the freedom and ability to modify our laws and government officials if we don't like them, in a peaceful manner. I intend to keep up the work to shape Illinois into what I want it to be, with my time, voice, and money.

Your suggestion to move is like the American colonists saying...well the laws and taxes here suck, let's just move to Mexico. Where would we be now if they decided to take that route, instead of standing up for what they believed in?

Not to mention some of the biggest white tails in the country. I know I almost hit one of those bastards driving through on my way to South Dakota. At first I thought it was a frickin elk.

That's because of all those flat, uninteresting corn fields another poster criticized! :D

Trent - good post about IGOLD. We need to remind people that, if they like the idea of a few thousand like-minded people marching on a bunch of politicians, IGOLD is Wednesday, March 18, 2015!!

Come and join us!!
:D

I've lived in illinois for my entire life, have had a FOID card for 42 years. I have a collection that many would envy and compete and hunt whenever I can. Only thing I can't have is full auto and that's not something I crave anyways. I have been carrying concealed for almost a
Year now and can't imgine moving to gain anything. We battle a Democratc leaning government but the Dems south of Cook county are moderates on guns so we do
have a counter balance to the gun grabbers in Chitown.

I live just across the river from Illinois and whenever I buy any type of ammo from the local Gander Mtn they always ask if I am a resident of Illinois. The folks that are from there and buying ammo in Kentucky are asked to see that "permission slip" before purchase. Sad that a man has to have a "kitchen pass" from their state to buy ammo or a gun for that matter.:(

Most states have a "kitchen pass" to carry a gun. That's sad too but they tolerate it.

I'm out of Illinois moving to Texas in July. I love the state, I love the city. I hate the politics and the corruption, so I'm not looking back.

Oh my! It may not be the absolute worst, but man - you have been brainwashed. For all intents and purpose, Illinois has gun registration for private transactions via their ISP FOID verification site. The FOID informs the State that you are a gun owner. Oh my!

Oh my, your facts are wrong! We don't have gun registration. The FOID check doesn't tell them what gun is going to whom. Just gives the OK that the guy's FOID is still good. It's a good system -- register the people, not the guns. So, please don't throw around terms like brainwashed. I'm fully aware of our state laws and maybe you should consider becoming so.

It seems that most of the people who think this Illinois FOID thing is so terrible don't even live in the state. IMO, anyone who thinks having such a card is oppressive, has too much time on his hands to sit around thinking.

You can add in the very real world likelihood of M855 5.56 ammo possession becoming a felony in Ill to the marks against it.....If the BATFE goes ahead with the ban, this is an inevitable result, as Ill only allows AP ammo possession that has a specific sporting use exemption

As a native Virginian who just left a 5 year stint in Illinois I feel I have some perspective here. Most of the people down state of cook county are conservative and pro gun. I was astounded at the FOID system when i first arrived in Champaign. Compared to a few states Illinois would not be as draconian but they are not a free state when it comes to gun ownership. I see the problem two fold. Chicago dictates policy for most of the state. And the good people of Illinois are used to corrupt politicians passing self serving agendas that affect their every day lives from gun rights to taxes. That said Illinois is certainly a battleground state and for right now the people are gaining ground.

Keep it up and good luck!

"register the people, not the guns."

That's all well and good until the Chicago politicians get enough votes to make a public list registered gun owners. I do not think registration of gun owners is a good thing at all.

Davek1977, I pointed out that factoid regarding that fate befalling IL citizens *IF* the m855 prohibition goes forward to my Congresswoman. One stray green tip and you go to prison! Yeah!

It would be funny to see how THAT would be handled--would ISP post a notice if that all goes down?? Maybe. Let's hope we don't need to find out. Keep after them on this!

Anything that involves giving out your name and address etc... to identify you as a POTENTIAL GUN OWNER is good enough to get you ID d as a probable gun owner.

If you think otherwise you are nieve.

My position is that it is not anyones business especially the government to know who is legally in possesion of firearms, how many they own, and the type and ammount of ammo they have.

Assurances of privacy is bull**** and most people know it.

It's a good system? Seriously? I'd say brainwashing is the perfect description....

This oppression is a big part of why I left IL. Imagine needing a government card to exercise your constitutional right of free speech or religion.

Those people are completely brainwashed and have no concept of what life is like in normal America. Even my conservative sister there thought the AWB was a good idea.

To give Illinois it's due- and if you knew my history you would know how hard that is for me- that state has made great strides in the past few years. Hopefully that trend will continue. However, unless they put of line of D8 bulldozers on I-80 from the Indiana line to Joliet and not have them stop until they hit Wisconsin I don't see much hope for my neighbors' future.

The progress IL has made in gun rights has only been because of courts and the NRA suing them, the politicians have been dragged kicking and screaming. I predict even though they have concealed carry, they will have far more restrictions on that right than normal America.

It does not seem very high road to me to be calling fellow board members "brainwashed." You may have a difference of opinion, but that is not brainwashing.

I'm disappointed to see that kind of name-calling continuing in this thread, unabated.

You may not like/approve/agree with Illinois' laws, or that Illinois' citizens abide by them.

But, to call all citizens of Illinois brainwashed is utterly disrespectful.

You will probably find conservatives who think the AWB was a good idea in many places, not just Illinois.

I don't really believe it's the whole of Illinois as much as one particular county that is populace enough to dictate to the rest of the state. Thus the need for the bulldozers.
