...Just One Caliber

.44 Mag OR .44 Special, OR .45 ACP.

If I'm going to hunt with it, it would be .44 Mag.
If it's going to be SD/HD only, .44 Special or .45 ACP.

OR .45 Colt. Great round that can be loaded for SD/HD or hunting and does both equally well.

My initial thought was that .357mag is as versatile as they come. There are FANTASTIC SD HPs made for it, it's good for hunting/penetration, and there are lighter rounds. My only hang-up on that is that while I like revolvers, 6 rounds does NOT appeal to me. So, I heavily prefer autos (no Desert Eagle .357s for me, by the way... LOL).

And yes, I did intend to say only one caliber, not only one firearm. That was definitely part of the point.

Great answers! I agree with most of them. :)

If allowed any choice of weapon with this one caliber restriction, then I say .22LR.

I think that three firearms could handle about any hunting or defence need that might present itself.

These three would be:

A long barrel revolver. (for light short range hunting/plinking)

A scoped bolt action rifle. (for longer range hunting/plinking)

An American Arms 180 machine gun. (for any damn thing that might want to screw with you within a hundred yards)

I think one ambiguity with the OP "poll" is whether his scenario is limiting folks to one handgun caliber, strictly for handgun use (and any number of other calibers for long guns), or the scenario limits people to one handgun caliber for everything.

In the former case, I was open to either the .357 or .45 acp as my choices. But if it's the latter, I would go strictly with the .357 because, as noted by others, that round benefits significantly more from a longer barrel -- with the proper loading -- than the .45.

Of course, I would weep bitter tears at the loss of the .45... cray2.gif

.

Another 9mm vote. Cost, capacity, control. And, banter aside, we all know it works well enough.

10mm auto beats all.

Anything the .357mag can do, it can do better, with a bigger bullet.

Can be had in a double action revolver (S&W), single action revolver (Ruger) and normal sized semi autos, both single and double action.

Make way for the 10mm, the king has arrived.

I say 9mm. Just about right for me. Good Capacity and decent firepower for my needs. And for a little more accuracy a 9mm carbine would pair up nicely, all using the same mags my pistol uses. Not like im gonna launch an assult or do anything aggressive when Im in survival mode. I would try to avoid contact, and if I did have to make contact with strangers then a 9mm pistol can be concealed well and not draw unwanted attention.
9mm ammo would also be good barter tool and I would surely be able to find some somewhere if I needed more ammo. Not that I see that happening.. :) But you never know.

Tough call, but I'm also gonna score the 22LR just a few points over the others for that "only one caliber" nightmare scenario. I've actually thought this out before (just for kicks) and rated each round I own guns in (no "4" calibers) in categories such as affordability, availability of firearms for, enjoyment of use, and suitability for defensive use. The 22LR scored high enough above the others in the non-defensive categories to carry it to the top overall.
