Keltecs 308 rifle sighting

Just from a marketing standpoint this rifle has a lot of things going for it:
  • Made in the USA: designed, manufactured, and serviced (and lifetime warranty) domestically
  • Gadget factor: compact bullpup, innovative trigger, ambidextrous, forward eject...
  • Reloader's dream: Dual extractors and nil velocity eject
  • EBR: self-explanatory, but can fill that role; compact for CQB, powerful round for punch & penetration or range, 20 round metric FAL mags, relatively easy take-down/field strip...
  • Hunting: compact for the bush and the .308 Win cartridge.
Price point's going to be critical, of course, and the gun is pretty heavy for its size/role, but looks very promising!

Does anyone have any idea of the price range? It looks like a very interesting and fun little rifle, and I definitely want one.

Price has been suggested ranging from $2000 for the 18" carbine to $3000 for the target model. These are all MSRP, so street prices will likely be about 70-75% of that.

Does anyone know what type of operating system it uses? Is it gas or gas/piston?

Seems a bit high. Aren't their .223 models priced around $500-$600? I'd hoped that the realistic price for a basic model would be under $1,000 and that target models would be roughly $500 more.

Yes, this is quite a bit higher than the typical KT offering and has been a major topic of discussion on KT message boards. As indicated by those who have seen, felt and shot this gun in person, KT appears to be trying to move upmarket. Whether they will succeed or end up with a Phaeton-like misstep (VW), only time will tell.

New SU-16?

Wes,

Pardon me if I am hijacking the thread, but could you comment on the rifle at the top on your photograph 019_7a.jpg?

It appears to be a pistol grip/side folding SU-16.
Thanks,
Max

If these become popular, you'll see the MSRP drop a bit. Most all new products are the most expensive when they are first released.

The biggest concern I have is that government will step in and screw everything up here, not that the market won't accept the gun.

I was wondering if anyone would notice that...if I'm remembering this correctly, it's an SU-16 that's been modified with a PLR grip and a custom wire (non-folding) stock, with padding wired onto the back. It belongs to one of Kel-Tec's employees, and it's his personal rifle he built up. Not a production item, and unlikely to ever be one, I suspect.

If the sale price on these things is going to be upwards of $1500 or so, I don't see them doing much to effect FAL mag availability (even as interesting as they look).

Wes,
Thanks for the reply. I did a search on the KTOG forum and found a one-off rifle that looked very similar, but didn't know the owner was a Kel-Tec employee.
I sent a couple of photocomps to Kel-Tec last year and received a polite reply indicating they weren't planning any new SU-16 configurations.

Either probably would be cost prohibitive.

One of the downsides I just read about the SU16s is that their barrel cannot be replaced. Is this true? And, is it true for this new rifle?

I dunno about the SU-16, but I from what I recall about the RFB barrels, they would require gunsmithing if you wanted to replace it.

Damn! It would have been awsome to be able to buy the Target model and be able to switch barrel/uppers with the compact model like an AR. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to buy 2.

Does that ejection chute have a back flow preventer of some kind?

A delayed ignition in the ejection chute might cause a problem I guess.

On FTF or FTE's, I am trying to figure how this rifle would be any more difficult than an AR or FAL where there is limited access to the chamber. An M14 is open top so you have full access, but most others are not.

Yes, there's a one-way "valve" or latch (a metal wedge on a spring) to keep the brass moving one one way only.

Wes mentions a page earlier in post #16 that upon FTF's, you just rack the bolt and move the round into the ejection chute, loading the next round in the process and reported zero feed/extraction failures.

Regarding access, check out the take-down pictures.

Foolish, foolish...foolish. A PLR grip with a folder would sell like hot cakes!
