I came a cross a local listing today , it was for 600 rounds of the Winchester .22 as shown. The seller wanted $25 for the lot. (comes to .041/round) I am always looking to add to the stash at a good price so I jumped on it. I had to ask the fellow - Why was he unloading the Winchester? Turns out that he has been fine tuning & sighting a specific rifle at 50 yards , and the particular round he sighted with is a bit slower than the Winchester ; the latter being about 1" high at the desired range. So , he said , he just had no use for the 600. Good for me!

The first steel plate event of the season at my local club takes place on Monday. Tomorrow I will break out my trusty MkI and practice with the Winchester , and with my old standard of CCI MiniMags. At 4 cents per round I can practice a lot. One or the other will be put to use on the steel plates. I think I got a great deal.

End of gloat.

Remember a few years ago when .22 ammo was hard to find? Stock up now while it is available. I had, and still have plenty, of .22 ammo on hand. I didn't sell any when it was bringing ridiculous prices but it did make good trading material.

Yeah , I have a fair amount on hand too , but how much is enough? 10,000 rounds? I dunno. That subject has been bandied about here before , but I still have not figured out the answer.

As to yesterday , I met the seller in the parking lot of an outdoors store - Gander Outdoors in fact - where a few years beck that package would have been $17 with a 2 per customer limit , this time $4 per box of 100 in the parking lot ... times sure change.

Does this mean that I have to admit that technically I bought ammo at Gander outdoors???

The amount to have on hand varies from shooter to shooter. With the inventory that I had on hand I was able to continue shooting my rimfires while others were scrambling to find ammo. The same people that were not prepared last time won't be prepared the next time it happens. Buy a brick each payday and you'll be surprised how fast it adds up....if you don't shoot it all up as fast as you buy it. :)

I'd say you got a great deal. The 100 packs sell for 7.99 today. I don't know how old it is but the red boxes are pretty current. They used to be clear way back. I've had good luck with current Win ammo for plinking.

I’m trying to build up to a 20k stash minimum. Thought I had about 10k but I started moving stuff and found 3-5k rounds. Should have sold ‘em during the shortage. Would have paid for 15k now.

I try to keep a supply on hand of at least what I plan to shoot for at least the next five years ahead always. When I use some I replace it to maintain stocks at that level. I will stop shooting it should I reach a one year supply level. I also try to purchase in bulk at sale prices whenever possible. The only sure thing is I can't reliably reload rimfire and the prices will always go up, so stocking up when I have the cash to spare as a hedge is a sure win.

This last shortage I stopped shooting when I had a 50 CAL ammo can mostly full of loose .22 LR ammo.

I bought 2 buckets of Remington from Academy when they had a sale.
1100 rounds for $39.99 with free shipping.
.036 per round.

I recently scored 7 boxes of Federal AutoMatch 325 round boxes for $70 from a seller off Armslist. That's 3.08 cents per round.

The key word here is bucket. (As far as Winchester vs Remington , well ...) I don't do buckets.

OK , you win.

37gr Winchester Super-X 1330 fps in the red 100 rd box worked very good for me in several .22 guns. The nose profile feeds well in the family's .22 autos.
Now all I can find locally in Win Super-X red 100 rd box is the 40gr 1280fps. It has a fat nose. The Winchester 555 bulk pack 36gr 1280fps has the same nose profile as the 40gr.
The OP scored six 100rd red boxes of Winchester Super-X 37gr 1330fps for $25. Color me green.

22 is relatively cheap and plentiful these days, as is a lot of other calibers. Might be a good time to stock up some.

I don't know how much is enough either. I think it depends a lot on how much you shoot. I think at least a years supply of every caliber.

Prices are down and the Old Retirees in my town are crying,They set up a buying scheme that kept our Wal-Mart cleaned out and then they would set up at the local gun shows and rip folks off.

Tell them "WAAAHHHH". I saw people at the gun shows selling the $20 Federal 550 bulk packs for $85. I thought they were HIGH as a kite. I knew the neckbeards were going to get caught with their 300K rounds of .22LR and nobody wanting to buy it at their over-inflated price.

Had the guy selling that $20 bulk pack for $40, he might have sold quite a bit during the shortage.

I personally have bought quite a bit of .22LR for considerably less off Armslist folks that didn't get the HUGE profit they wanted.

I shoot my .22s a LOT, and it's usually an endless cycle of shoot and replace, so as not to cut into the stockpile.
This never ending winter was brutal this past year here in the NE, and I made i much fewer trips to the range w shorter sessions.
I've kept buying at the same rate since price are still good and the supply is plentiful.
Doing a quick inventory this past month, I've added about 2K+ rounds to the stockpile as a result.
As others have said, keep buying at a reasonable pace, it adds up fast.
