What are you opinions of the M&P compact?

Been eyeing one for a tractor/truck/farm gun. Figured with a stainless slide and poly frame a nick, ding, or scratch would not bother me as much as it would on a blued steel gun.

Before the glock people start, I have shot a glock, but never owned one, more of a CZ guy:D(but not the P07), the M&P fits my hand better than the 26. Nothing against Glock, just like the feel of the smith better.

Also, what is the advantage or disadvantage to the ones with the safety? External safety a good or bad option?

i like the m&p9c. its a good boat/truck gun. well as in your case, a tractor gun. 2 thumbs up! and they carry a lifetime warrenty

I heard they stopped offering the manual safety option, someone plz correct me if I'm wrong.

That should give an idea of which version is in higher demand, anyway.

I'm a glock fan but I have to admit the ergos on the m&p are better. The life time warrenty is a nice selling point but odds are you'll never have trouble with an m&p.
The m&p9c fits just perfect in the had and the 12+1 capasity is very nice in such a small package. With the flat floor plate it conceals just as nicelly as the g26.
The m&p9 will be as rugged as you need it to be around the farm, or in the truck. It would be a fine pistol to fill those roles.
I personally don't like a manual thumb saftey on a defense pistol. If your a safe gun handler its not needed.

I like the m&p. It feels better in my hand. The ergonomics seem better. But I do a better job running the glock.

I have nothing negative about the m&p I owned (granted it was a pro 5", not the compact). I wasn't a fan of the trigger, but it's just a preference.

Add a set of warren tactical sevigny carry sights and the m&p is a great handgun.

I have the Compact 40 and love it. Shot it side by side with the Glock and liked the M&P better. I went back a bought the full size also.

I would not want an external safety, it's unecessary IMHO

I can't say enough good things about my M&P9c. I wear it all the time. I honestly don't know how many boxes of ammo I've put through it, but it's alot 'cause I just enjoy shooting it. Not one failure of any kind. I carry FMJ in it around the farm and swap it out with a mag of Hornady 124XTP when I go to town. I believe a safety on a pistol like this is a complete waste of time. It's as accurate as any firearm I own and was so right out of the box. IMHO you can't go wrong and can't do better for any useage. It's my constant companion when on the tractor, in the truck or anywhere. I'll shutup now.

An outstanding pistol, as is its full-size version. The one I had, had 100% perfect functioning. For that, I can forgive its slightly excessive slide thickness and resulting "top-heaviness."

I am a new (well, it's been several decades) shooter shopping for a compact striker-fired .40, and this is one of the guns that was on my list. I put a couple boxes through one on rental, and found it fit my hand quite nicely. I shot the gen 3 Glock 23 better though, even though it didn't fit my had quite as well.

Though it should be enough said with the following statement, it never is...

My carry pistol is a M&P 45C.

So, here's why (since the statement alone never seems to be enough)...
--shooting 2handed, freestyle, unsupported...I manage 3in groups at 25yrs from this 4in bbl .45acp firing it at a pace that all 8rnds of the magazine are downrange in 20secs or less
--everything I've fed it (including SWC) feed flawlessly
--it handles smoothly, points naturally, and it feels really good in my hand
--it conceals well

things I don't care for...
--remember to get your pinky out of the way before you slam the mag home or you're in for a nasty pinch
--the trigger isn't great (I'm a 1911 guy), but smooths out after a few hundred rounds
--mags are hard to get

What are you opinions of the M&P compact?

I have a very high opinion of my M&P9c. Accurate, great ergos, stone-cold reliable. Been shooting four years w/o a single problem.

I have the M&P 9c and I really like it. I tried out a Glock and the 9c and the Glock just didn't feel right in my hand. I only have 250 rounds through it but so far it eats everything I throw at it. It's very accurate or I should say at least as accurate as I am. It will be my carry gun and should work well in that role.

I've carried an M&P 9C for years now. Very accurate, reliable, and in my opinion the M&Ps are the easiest guns to shoot quickly and well around. Some people will whine about the trigger but honestly I wouldn't lend much credence to that.

I had a 9c and like everything about it...except the safety. It was somewhat light, in that it snapped to the fire position too easily, and often I would pull the gun out from my waist band to find that it was in the fire position. If you don't want the safety version, then this is a moot point, and you will love this pistol. But if you buy the safety version, be aware of this tendency to snap off too easily, in my opinion.

I need a safety on my pistols, so I traded my 9c for Beretta PX4 Compact, which I also am liking very much.

If you get a 40c you can purchase a 9 barrel and mags. A twofer if you will.
I like the compacts as one can adde FS magazines with XGrips for higher capacity. I purchased my 40c with night sights and three mags.
I'm looking at a 45c next. Yes I'm sold. Made in America and great warranty. S&w pays the freight if you need service.

If I were to get one, it would be a 9, not 40. Not a 40 fan.

Where is the best place to get extra mags?

I have a 9c and it's been a great reliable gun. I carry it in a milt sparks iwb

I wont disagree with this but I'll add to it.

I have had a 9c with the thumb safety for over 3 yrs now.

Originally I felt the safety is on the large side and also feel that it could have a more positive engagement/disengagement.

Here's the interesting stuff.

I did a bunch research to address those two points.

I ended up getting two additional safety levers from S&W. I wanted to sand/file them down a little so they dont stick out so far like bat wings. I thought they stuck out too far and also felt it contributed to the thumb safety being flipped off sometimes when I carried IWB.

If any one is interested I can compared the original to the modifies ones and tell you how many far/how many ribs can be shaved down safely before reaching the intermal metal frame of the safety lever. (I forgot)

I also found info as to how to slightly file the detent for a more positive engagement/disengagement. Simple to do.

Thing is.... by time I got around to modifying the thumb safety levers shape to make it smaller two things happened.

1) The hoslter broke in and the safety lever never flipped off by accident anymore.

2) And the size of the safety lever wasnt an issue any longer either.

The original unmodified thumb safety is still installed and I see no reason to change at this time.

If I did... I would file it down just to take a liiittle bit off of it.

I have had a stock BHP since 93-94 and wanted a compact to be as similar as possible. I would prefer that my 9c had the mag safety too but no dice.

My 9c has been my daily carry gun for about 4 years now. I also own the service model. Both of them have eaten anything I've fed them, and they shoot great. I've never had a problem with either of them. Great guns. :)

I have the 40c and it has been flawless. I got it for a song and am happy with it. I also have other comparable compact .40's and none have been any better. Unfortunately mine has the horrible mag disconnect which I have yet to disable, but one day.

Also, what is the advantage or disadvantage to the ones with the safety? External safety a good or bad option?
Indifferent. I think a manual safety is superfluous on a DAO pistol, but they are not without merit, either. If, however, you choose a manual safety model, train yourself so its operation is instinctive and automatic. A gunfight is no time to try to remember which mode you left it in.

I've owned them in 9mm & .45. Good guns. I went back to blocks but if you like the way the m&p fits I think you will be happy

I'll mention it ONLY because it came up in the thread.

I was amazed that I liked the ergos on the Gen 4 Glocks better than the M&P. I went to the LGS, and was sure that I'd bring home a S&W M&P. I like the buy American idea, and S&W's lifetime warranty rocks. To my great consternation, I didn't like the way the M&P felt in my hand AT ALL. As an afterthought, I asked to see the Glock 19. I held it in my hand, and it felt like home. Glock is the only gun I'll buy now.

For those who say they don't like Glocks, I suggest that you try holding a Gen 4.
