Protection, using CCW .... wife thinks I am crazy wearing the thing every waking hour but hey ..... the one in a million problem can occur unannounced so . it's like my wrist watch .. it's worn all the time.
I enjoy shooting a lot . used to do huge amount of competition shooting . enjoy long arms too ..... but in the end it is to permit me the (I consider) inalianable right of self defence. Pray God I never have to use it in anger.
#1- For fun, i.e. informal target shooting/plinking.
#2 (very close to #1 until I get another shotgun)- Home defense.
If I lived in a carry state #2 would be personal protection/CCW and the current #2 would be #3 but as I live in MD a knife and pepper spray are the only weapons I can carry. Anyway, as it is all the choices are almost equally important. I bought my first gun, and most of the subsequent guns, for fun at the range. I consider self-defense and some guns were bought with that specifically in mind (actually w/ CCW in mind for when I move or if MD becomes a CCW state) but considering the likelihood of me getting into a defensive situation anytime soon fun wins out as my primary handgun consideration.
For me, handguns are all about personal protection. I bought my Glock 19 because a lot of gangbangers and drug dealers began showing up at my apartments.
I don't really enjoy shooting handguns nearly as much as my rifles. Aaaah, rifles.
eagles1181 - Sorry we missed your request to add the extra category earlier. I added it and another - "All of the above" which is how I would/did answer the poll. (If you want me to remove that category, let me know, after all it's your poll.)
Note - unfortunately the SW won't let me rearrange the categories so that "Other" could come last.
Recreation, challenge, diversion, pride of ownership, beauty, hunting, history, collecting, competition. I have almost no interest in personal defense. I have a CCW but almost never carry. I got it so I didn't have to pay the fee for the background check when I buy a new gun. Don't have any loaded guns around the house or car.
I chose all of the above. I am lucky enough to own more than a couple handguns. I have certain guns for specific uses. I have 3 that I routinely carry, rotation depends on weather and dress conditions. 2 I hunt with. 2 I compete with. All of them I 'play' with at the range. Not to mention the rifles and shotguns, but those are a different thread. When I fist applied for a CCW, I wanted to hunt with a pistol. Personal protection came later, when I made a few career choices that made carrying a good idea.
1. Because I can.
2. Because a lot of people out there don't want me to
If there were some kind of guarantee that we wouldn't lose more of our Bill of Rights, I probably would have just just left my handgun sitting in the sporting goods store's inventory until I needed one for personal protection or whatever.
3. Now that I have one, I use it for competition, plinking and home defense.
I really thought 'all of the above' came closest for me as an answer. I sat there saying 'DEFENSE! no, wait, its competition, no no, hold it, it's the noise I love...' shrugged it off, went for all of the above. Does it have to be one reason? I like the thought of protecting my family. I do my bit once a month, at my local club's bowling pin comp. And some days, I just want to be standing knee deep in brass.
