Police kill student in German uniform

Seattle police shot and killed an armed man dressed in a World War II-era Nazi uniform early Thursday morning in the University District.

Seattle police shot and killed a University of Washington senior who was dressed in a World War II-era German uniform and who officers say was brandishing a long rifle with a bayonet early Thursday in his University District apartment.

The student, identified by friends as Miles Allen Murphy, was well-known on campus as a smart, eccentric history buff who loved to participate in WWII re-enactments and would even show up to class, at times, dressed in a historic uniform.

Friends said Murphy, 22, would entertain at parties by playing everything from old German folk songs to Britney Spears tunes on his accordion.

Murphy was killed about 2 a.m. Thursday when police responded to neighbors' complaints that several men were shooting vintage, military-style rifles and shotguns into a dark alley near the 5200 block of 17th Avenue Northeast, police spokesman Jeff Kappel said.

When police were called, Kappel said, neighbors pointed out an apartment in a large white house. When police knocked on the door, one of the suspects opened the door brandishing a long rifle with a large bayonet attached.

Uniformed police officers warned the man several times to drop his weapon. He didn't, Kappel said, and he pointed it at one of the officers. Two officers shot him several times. He died at a hospital Thursday morning, Kappel said.

Spencer Bray, a UW senior, was one of about 20 friends who gathered Thursday night to share stories about Murphy. Bray said Murphy — a German cultural-studies major — had amassed a large collection of WWII memorabilia from the Internet, goodwill stores and from antique dealers.

"He was one of the most peaceful guys I have met. He was really just a nice guy," Bray said. "I never heard him espousing any Nazi ideology; none of that interested him. He liked the physical stuff from WWII because he was such a history buff."

Bray said Murphy sometimes would wear kilts or uniforms to class — including German and U.S. gear from WWII — but would make sure the outfits didn't have symbolic additions such as swastikas.

"He had this Russian snow coat that he'd been wearing recently," Bray said. "It was military issue from WWII."

He said Murphy spoke good German and Swedish, as well as some Finnish, and wanted to be a professor of German literature.

"He was eccentric, but he was very well-liked," Bray said. "It's a huge shock. I read the news today and ... it was really, really hard to hear for all of us."

Murphy worked part time at Red Mill Burgers on Phinney Ridge, Bray said, and always would tip well when he ate out as a result of his experience in the hospitality trade.

On the social-networking site MySpace, Murphy wrote, in a joking fashion, that he lived in a 1920s room and only entered the 21st century when "absolutely necessary." He wrote that he collected vintage clothes and never turned down a well-mixed martini. He listed "Mr. Bayonet" as his lucky charm and said he was "kind of impulsive."

Bray recalled one party when Murphy entertained the crowd on his accordion with everything from old folk songs to "Les Miserables." Murphy also could play piano, violin, banjo and guitar, his friend said.

"He could figure out just about any song on any of the instruments that he played," Bray said. "It was really cool. It was fun to have him play and sing."

The shooting took place in a quiet neighborhood of large homes near the university.

The man who lives in the apartment next door, Mark Kedziora, said that before Thursday night he hadn't seen his neighbor wearing a full German military uniform, but said the man wore a black mustache, combed-over hair and military boots.

Kedziora said he saw his neighbor and two other men with guns standing in the alley at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. He looked outside when he heard a loud bang, thinking the guns were fake. But when he watched the men reload, he realized the guns were real and said to his friend, "That guy's an idiot."

One of the men was wearing an olive uniform and a military helmet, Kedziora said, and his neighbor was wearing a Nazi military uniform.

"I didn't know he had the whole get-up," he said. A third man was wearing street clothes. It wasn't clear if either of the other two men live at the apartment.

Kedziora said he heard confusion outside and could hear police warning the man to drop his weapon. A few minutes later, they watched out the window as the wounded neighbor was taken away and SWAT teams searched the neighborhood.

Police searching the apartment after the incident found the large collection of German military regalia and a lot of alcohol, Kappel said.

At one point, police evacuated the building, waking tenants.

A few scraps of yellow police tape remained in the alley Thursday afternoon.

No one answered the door at the apartment where the shooting occurred, although the lights were on. Cardboard partially covered a pool of blood on the landing outside the door.

The police officers who fired at the man are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Sad, but if he didnt drop the gun it was his fault. i think the martinis is what got him. evedince points towards intoxication. Excpecially shooting their guns in an alley. Very bad idea along with not dropping the weapon. Of course getting drunk was the worst idea. Sad that it would happen to someone that actually done a lot with their life.

someone stupid/drunk enough to go shooting in the alley? in uniform? at 1 am? is stupid/drunk enough to point a gun

DON'T SHOOT RIFLES IN AN ALLEY! What an idiot!

I also am not sure I believe that he pointed the gun at the cops, but of course I wasn't there.

But he was being a drunken idiot and I can't say he didn't bring it on himself.

What's wrong with grabbing the rifle and taking the guy to jail for disorderly conduct or for firing the gun inside city limits or whatever?

My comment the moderator deleted was not racial!

I feel bad for a guy with so much qualities to die in such a stupid way, but let's put ourselves in the cop's position. Someone is pointing a gun at you , you tell him to drop it and he doesn't. Would you wait to find out whether the guy is or isn't going to pull the trigger ? If I see a gun pointed at me, I rather be the one who pulls the trigger first because there is no second place in situation like this. Guns are a serious business . If someone refuses to handle them safely, they may get hurt .

could have been blanks in the alley which is still stupid but to point a rifle at a cop is tarded. darwinism at its best

December 2005 there was a "drive by" shooting in the small town I was working in. About 1:30 am I was dispatched to a shots fired call in the East end of town. I got to the complainant's address and was told they thought the shots came from farther East. I drove up and down the streets East of the complainant's and was unable to find anything.

The next day the victim of the drive by called in to say that someone had shot his inflatable Santa and snowman yard decoration over night. The "drive by" had occurred West of the complainant's so I was looking in the wrong part of town. I didn't pay any attention to the Santa and Snowman being down while on patrol because many people shut off the fans that keep them inflated when they go to bed.

It didn't take much investigation to find out who did it. It was Jeremy......., who I had dealt with for years. A local good old boy who liked to drink, smoke a little weed and fight when he was drunk. In fact he was usually very belligerent and hard headed when he was drunk. He admitted that he was very drunk and thought it would be a good practical joke to play on his friend by doing a "drive by" on his yard ornaments. I was instantly very glad I didn't encounter him that night, because it could have easily led to a standoff with the same result that happened in Seattle.

I doubt the Seattle officers wanted to shoot him, sometimes drunks and others don't leave you any choice.

Idiotic, but still sad.
It sounds as though he was very smart on other days than his last.
But a little dumb can kill a lot of smart very quickly. It just makes you wonder what some people are thinking, and how unpredictable people are.

Are you seriously pulling the "just grab the gun out of his hand" excuse? That's something antis try to say against us. It's not a statement of rational thought.

Alcohol, Firearms, German uniform, etc. Since he was a history major etc, he was probably was carrying an authentic Mauser 8x57.

When someone pulls a gun on you, why not just grab the gun out of their hand and then tell them to stay still until you can call the police?

Or when someone invades your house, why not just grab their shoulders, take their gun or knife out of their hand, then push them out the door?

Or if you are a woman, and someone is trying to rape you, why not just say "hey, don't rape me please"?

Let's mix-up the focus here. Guy has been shooting, drinking. He goes to re-enter his apartment, but errantly he comes into your apartment. You draw your CCW, and order him to drop the rifle. He points the pig-poker at you...

A) You fire?

B) You don't fire?

I know my answer.

This was just on the news here in Seattle.

Officers were told by a witness beforehand that the rifle did not have live ammunition in it. He was a kid with no criminal record, drinking and shooting blanks to celebrate New Years.

Seeing as they were not threatening or endangering anybody, I believe the officers should have retreated.

HAHAHAHA. Because that would have been stupidly wreckless and someone innocent would have gotten killed!

i see the so called "high road" only supports group think. what a load of sheeple, anyone want to offer a good explanation to why my post was deleted? anyone? mods just love the authority the internet gives them. just watch, this post will be deleted too:mad:

Cops shoot UW student with K98 wearing Nazi garb

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/394443_nazi02.html

check this out. I assume the bolt action rifle was a K98 mauser. My take is that the cops' claim that the student pointed the rifle at them. Holding a rifle, it's difficult to not "point" it in the general area of the cops. Also, most responses call the student a neo-nazi, which is false, he was a re-enacter. My brother tipped me off to the story, which might've been suppressed due to the inappreciable value of a white, single male who enjoyed a politically-incorrect historical subject.

Being verbally told "it's unloaded" is the most worthless statement ever, whether it's you handling your best friends new pistol, you cleaning your own, or cops dealing with a disorderly suspect.

1) All guns are always loaded until you visually confirm they are not.

A friend telling the cops the gun was unloaded should not mean anything to cops. Just like me telling you my pistol is unloaded should mean nothing to you until you check it yourself.

The cops treated a firearm they did not visually inspect as loaded, as they should have. And as any of us should as well.

There's a large thread on this right below you. He also had no nazi symbols on his clothing.

Sure, I will. I used the report function because you posted the absolutely ludicrous statement that the cops involved in this should be shot. That kind of nonsense is harmful to the mission of promoting responsible firearm ownership. Apparently someone agreed.
