Mossberg 500 Vs. Remington 870

I have a Mossberg Maverick 88, its basically a 500, just a few minor differences. Its really a great gun, I've never had any problems with it and it shoots very well. My friend has an 870, its slightly heavier, the action seems to cycle more smoothly, and it seems to have a shorter throw. Personally, i think the 870 is a little bit better. if i had shot my friend's 870 before i got my Mossberg i would have gotten the 870, but i still like my 88

i have never owned a 500, so i wont say its a bad gun but not as good as the 870, the 500 would be a good gun if not shot alot the 870 will out last the 500 many times over, :scrutiny:

The 870's seem to feel and sound more
solid than the 500's.But i'am totally
happy with my 500A.I was also happy
with my 870 so it really doesn't
matter to me.

i have an 870 and a guy i know has a 500. In my opinion i like the 870 much better but thats just personal feel. It feels stronger, a little heavier and seems simpler in design. Both good guns, i just prefer the Remington.

PLEASE NOT THIS TOPIC AGAIN.....

everyone knows the mossberg whoops up remington.

Persuader 500 4 ever. My boomstick.

Never more, never more.

the unending comparison...I can't take it anymore

(kust kidding...fun with smilies)

Go handle both. both are great guns, both have great support and do the same thing well. To me- the mossberg felt better in my hands.

That's very interesting, especially since the Mossberg 500 is the only shotgun to ever pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test .............. since you have never owned a 500 please enlighten me as to how you reached this conclusion.

I have never owned an 870 but I shot one once and it worked fine. I owned a Mossberg 500 for 15 years and it never let me down. Recently I purchased a used 590A1 and I only have one box of shells through it but shoots and functions very well.

It wasn't the Mossberg 500 that passed the military test; it was the 590A1 version. Similar to the 500 but more metal and less plastic among other differences.

That being said however, the Mossberg's safety is so much more intuitive and better for lefties than the 870. IMHO

Indeed. Wouldn't it be wise to go for the 590? It's sturdier and the only shotgun, AFAIK, to pass the military's torture test.

I agree with 50 smilie guy...this thread is never ending...

They are both quality weapons. I have a Mossy 590. I bought it at a great time, person was selling it cheap at a gun shop. I have put between 400-500 rounds through it. Never a problem and I like the styling and feel.

I saw this statement one time in one of these threads.

"A 500 will out last you...and a 870 will out last a 500"

Needless to say...BOTH are fine weapons. Just get the one you like...don't worry about reliablity issues....you wont have to.

Ford vs. Chevy, Toyota vs. Honda, boobs vs. butt. It's all a matter of opinion.

Ford. Neither, Ford. Butt - who needs boobs when she has a nice rear?? :neener: :D

No butt seriously :uhoh: I love my 870 Marine Magnum but I really want a 590A1 as well. I like both guns equally as well I guess. I would not have a problem trusting my life to either one over the other. I guess I fall into the hey why not just get both category! :p

Mossberg over Remington for me.

I have had both. I believe the 870 is a better quality gun, but I prefer the 500
1. It costs less.
2. The thumb safety is so very convenient and more apt to be used which makes for better safety. You have visual and manual ease with it.
3. The action release is esier to use
3. I hate the rough finish on the 870 express.
4. To me the 500 is esier to dissassemble.
5. I am not sure what the 870 has for a warranty. I know the 500 is 10 years.
6. 500 feels and fits me better

I've only ever owned Mossbergs, but I've shot 870s...Not sure there's enough difference to even argue about, except I like the Mossberg safety better, and they just "feel" better to me, which is entirely a subjective thing. And they're a bit less expensive. As far as dependability, I doubt you'll ever shoot enough to wear anything out....my oldest Mossy had thousands of rounds through it, without a malfunction of any kind.

For me it would be the mossberg 500. I picked up a new one with a slug and bird barrel, both ported and with chokes. I also picked up a 50cal (by mossberg) muzzleloader barrel for it. One shotgun to do three different things, I don't think remington can touch that.

You just put the barrel in like any other, and inside the chamber is a little nipple holder thinkey. You open the chamber, and you slide a 209 primer in the holder, slide the action forward (just like a shell) and fire! Then when you pump back the 209 usually comes right out. It is not very hightech, but it works. I picked mine up for $100. They are on the mossberg website if you want to read more up on it. They will give you better technical words than me:) You would clean it pretty much like the older sidearm muzzleloader models. I have it just as a back up if anything went wrong with my omega during muzzleloading season.
