now dont get me wrong, i have no urge to have any handgun pointed at me, but in your opinion what would be the most intimidating handgun to draw on someone or to have drawn on you?

really, pick one. dont just say any...we all know that ;)

for me it would probably be a 44 Special smith snubbie. just the sight of such a small revolver with such a large bore is intimidating. even more so than the N frames i think.

i always thought some of the movie intimidators were silly, like a Ti nitride golden desert eagles... come on now, thats just silly :D

I remember seeing a 4" nickel plated S&W 29 .44 mag with Pachmayr grips sitting in a dealer's display case that really got my attention. I thought to myself that this is one intimidating gun. Wish now that I had bought it. :D

The Colt Anaconda looks like a mean S.O.B to me

1911

If I saw someone pointing one at me, I would know that he knew what he was doing. That is much more intimidating than some punk pointing something big at you.

I'm thinking a S&W 629 with a 4" bbl. Even if you took cover behind a car, you still might get some lead in you.:what:

I had a handgun pointed at me once a long time ago. Sure, anything really does fit this question, but to go for the most intimidating, I'd go w/ either a HK SOCOM or a Desert Eagle.

BBL length has a lot to do with it. Back in the old days, some folks wouldn't mess with lil ol me b/c of the 6" revolver I use to carry.

4v50 Gary, it is an interesting observation you make regarding barrel length's relationship to intimidating image. I have heard from some police officers that some of their "customers," ignorant in the area of firearms, perceive potency in the size of the handgrips. Large grips, such as S&W target grips, are equated with Magnum power, no matter the caliber of the handgun.

To quote the Guru from Texas (see here for source):
"You can say ‘stop’ or ‘alto’ or use any other word you think will work, but I’ve found that a large bore muzzle pointed at someone’s head is pretty much the universal language."
I tend to agree... That said, I think a S&W N-frame in .44 or .45 is a good start, as are the Ruger, Dan Wesson, Colt and Taurus equivalents. In semi-auto, a .45 is also good. I know a few folks who've brightly polished the crown of the barrel of their carry guns for the "intimidation" effect, and believe me, looking down a brightly-crowned .45 muzzle is certainly intimidating!

I guess perhaps the best candidate on general sale right now is the S&W .500 Magnum. Man, that thing is BIG! :what:

Nickel plated 1911 with the bushing and barrel left blued. Hole looks a lot bigger, trust me it works.:what:

Kind of the opposite (but same idea) of what Kenneth said - I have a blue 45 Officers Model with a very bright polished full bull barrel that just looks mean. My snubbie with the laser grip will also get the necessary attention as will my 4" nickel 44 mag with visible Gold Dot HPs.

Andrew wyatt, i was gonna put another vote in for the 1911, but mostly the older ones from the 20's and 30's. the real gangster and fed pistols.

something about a really simple no frills 1911 is very intimidating.

I haven't had the "pleasure" of looking at the business end of one, but I guess a Serbu Super Shorty, (a Mossberg 12 gauge pump cut down into a pistol) would be quite intimidating.

The double shotgun pistols like the 20 gauge Ithaca Auto Burglar would be impressive too, I think.

500 S&W Magnum; the size of the gun, and the size of the 440 gr HC round, is almost beyond belief!

I call the intimidation brought on by a gun and it's appearance as the gun's 'fecalation factor'

FECALATION FACTOR:

How much a given gun would make an attacker would crap his pants upon seeing said handgun pointed at him.

FF is higher for big, large bored, shiny pistols.

I have to narrow down the specific rules and come up with a point scale for it.

Of course, a pump action 12ga would probably have about the highest FF of any defense weapon.
