I have been activly (at least twice a month) shooting for the past 7 years, have accumulated a dozen or so guns and load all my own ctrfire ammo.
Most of my guns are on the lower wrung of rep and quality. I do have a decent RRA NM AR15 and a CZ75 SPO1 in 9mm.
I have a Taurus D/A revolver, a Ruger S/A revolver, a few semi-autos and others handguns, a few rimfire rifles and a few centerfire rifles.
Generally i shoot just 2 or 3 of all my guns: I have a Wilson'ized Norinco 1911 Gov that is an excellent shooter that I shoot most often. Then its the CZ75 SPO1 but shoot it less and less and my AR fills my rifle fix.
For the past couple years I've been pondering selling off all my guns except maybe the RRA AR15 in order to help finance one, maybe 2 excellent guns. I prefer the 1911 platform over all others so the first would be a 1911 Gov. or 6" long slide in matte stainless steel.
During these past couple years I've reading, researching and dreaming about top end 1911A1's and man! I sure like Ed Brown 1911s like the 'Executive Target' or Elite. I like the way they are made.
For a rifle I like my AR and could upgrade the one I have when needed.
Im wondering if anyone else with a limited firearms budget has considered doing this type of thing?

Thank Yous

that would depend on your preferences - i tend to like quality firearms but i also like variety - so i have some relatively expensive guns, and some fairly cheap ones. However if you would be happy with fewer, higher quality guns go for it.

Actually, that's kinda what I've been doing. Stuff that I don't shoot is going. At 58, if I haven't used it by now I most likely never will.

Planning on going on a PD hunt next summer, so I'm trading off non shooting stuff for varmint guns.

No need for safe queens, Nothing wrong with selling a few to buy the 1911 you really want. You will enjoy it.

But it is always nice to have an extra gun back at the ranch.. Tough Call.

Set your sites (sorry, couldn't resist) on something you want and SAVE until you can afford it.

When I first started collecting I was on a very limited budget (Navy wages), so I bought what I could afford. As my level of income rose I'd buy the occasional high-end item.

Over time l learned that I got just as much satisfaction by purchasing a Ruger P-85 as I did by buying a Wilson / Baer / Brown.

Buy what you can afford and be happy with what you have - something those of us who collect frequently overlook since we always want the "next" one :D!

It's a wonderful disease!

Take care,
DFW1911

I agree, i try to keep my guns to a minimum only so i can have a couple decent ones. Each of my guns have a purpose, and each are of decent quality.

2 pistols, one for house (fnp-9) one for carry (KT p3at). Thats IT

1 Rem 870 shotgun
1 Marlin 7000 .22lr rifle
1 RRA ar-15

Thats all i really feel i need. Each gun works great and serves its purpose. The only thing else i would do is maybe a long range bolt-action. But no duplicates, and no two guns with same purpose.

take this little by little. Price out your desired gun, then sell ONLY enough guns until you have reached that price. Purchase desired gun. Wait 12 months and evaluate your decision before repeating it.

I went through my sizable collection (70+) this year and started "thinning the herd". I have sold 9 or 10, and purchased 2 along with a $1200 optic and boatloads of accessories. I couldn't be happier- it feels better to have fewer guns that you use and love, than bunches that you don't.

Go for the Ed Brown. I have reduced to only 1911 .45's and High Standard .22's and haven't looked back.
Rifles are .22 and .223's with a 45/70 as back up.
Quality over quantity.

By the way, I have 4 EB that I rotate for carry except for the ET.

I have recently downsized my collection quite a bit. I wouldn't say so much due to a limited budget, it's that I want to put more of my money toward other things. I am really focused at the moment on paying off my mortgage. All the money I previously spent on guns is now going toward the mortgage.

So yes I downsized, sold off much of my collection. I am left with what I think will be sufficient for most any situation. They aren't necessarily the highest quality of firearms, just what I think covers all the bases. They are a RRA AR15, Remington 700 in .308, Kel-Tec Sub-2000 in 9mm, Marlin 60, Mossberg 500, and a Glock 30.

This is what I would do in your situation. Make sure all of my bases are covered with firearms you know work every time. I know what it is like to lust for a high end 1911, but I knew that if I needed it the Glock would do anything the 1911 would with the same reliability. So I was able to put that extra money toward my mortgage. Of course this is my situation and yours is different. Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps a little. I know you really want that nice 1911 though. Nothing wrong with that either.

To each his own.
