I went to see dance flick at midnight tonight with someone. When we came out of the side door at about 1:50 AM, we started walking towards my car, which is 4-5 lanes up from the main entrance, but right in front. As we are walking, some guy starts slowly walking towards us and then he says "Hey whats going on" like he knew us. He's interviewing us 10 seconds after we walked out. I noticed him from the start and kept staring at him as he kept getting closer. I switched positions with the girl as we got closer to the car.
I drive a Honda Civic. This is relevant because a civic alarm just like mine went off as the guy started walking towards us. I believe this was his friend in the background about 50 feet trying to cause a distraction. Well, it didn't work and I kept staring and moving.
I am not sure what I did but at about 15 feet he just stopped. Maybe it was because I was staring at him, or maybe cause I was wearing a AK-78 russian shirt, or whatever, but he literally stopped in his tracks and watched as I opened the passenger door and then went around front to my side to leave. I confirmed I wasn't crazy with said passenger by asking if I was crazy or if that guy was casing us.
In the rear view I saw him go to his friend and stand around again.
So, in the five stages, this person was attempting to position for an attack in my view and stopped because he didn't like the risk for some reason.
Love my permit, love my gun. Didn't even have to reach for it. woot for scary faces. Thank GOD I didn't have to use it.

Word, man.

I feel so much more relaxed when I carry, and I think it actually allows you to exhibit the confidence to avoid any confrontation whatsoever.

Good job, man.

Did you think to call the police to run them off? The next people walking past might not have been so lucky.`

Kudos to you for walking around in Condition Yellow. When you ramped up to Orange it was clear he got the message: "I am aware of the threat and you are not inside my decision cycle buddy". This seems like a textbook example of how criminals will not screw with people they perceive as "aware" - they can't get the drop on you and get inside your decision cycle. In fact, considering how YOU reacted, the thug probably realized, this guy is inside MY decision cycle...". I love it - great example of how simply walking around aware of your surroundings can stop a threat in it's tracks.

Good job. Were you solely focused on the obvious threat or were you also scanning the area for his buddy with the hypothetical crowbar?

buddy was in peripherals in blue. I did not call the cops. I just got out of there. Sorry to anyone who went after me, not worried about them personally I had a girl to worry about instead. Also, he was way out of hypothetical reach with said crowbar. 50 feet from me easily.
Dance flick was chosen cause she wanted to see it.
To be honest I had the IDIOT idea to go back there and find out what they wanted as I drove back home, but then killed that idea cause I didn't want to die. Yes, it was a stupid thought

Couple of questions:

kyo, what part of atl? Either myself, my wife or the two of us take our son to a movie about once a month. Granted, we don't have him out that late but, it would be good to know the genereal area.

Heaven forbid you were more worried about your date than standing there exposed in a parking lot with at least two potential assailants within 100' of you, calling the cops on your cellphone, dividing your attention from a very probable threat, explaing three or four times to the nice 911 operator what transpired, no, I'm not making this up, waiting 30 minutes for an LEO to get dispatched and arrive unless you were at one of the theatres the cops hang out at just because of that sort of thing.

Let's not forget about your friend, who was apparantly not armed, not prepared to take action, you really thought that it was more prudent to remove her from the scene than to call the cops? I mean, what were you thinking?

While it might sound cold hearted to leave the way he did, it was most assuredly the most prudent thing to do.

kyo,

I think that you did the correct thing. Past 12:00 there are no coincidences and no charity.

Good looking out

Always keep your right (gun) hand free.

Typically, verbal dissuasion works pretty well.

"hey, what's going on?" should be answered with a loud and firm,

"Sorry, I can't help you."

Keeping your eyes on the guy(s) was a good thing to do.

I have my wife walk on my left nearly always, as I need my right hand free to draw. I may tell her to "get behind me," if the situation warrants.

When your GF switched sides, I hope she didn't cross in front of you to do it.

You didn't call the cops because you were worried about a girl?

What exactly would you tell the cops anyway?

"Some guy was walking in the parking lot behind me, I stared at him and he went to get in the car with his buddy."

Just not enough at that point to call LE.

Good on you for paying attention to both threats instead of getting focused in on the first one. It is a very common ploy to have two assailants coming from two directions. Once they get close it will be very tough to out manuver them & get away. Good job.

discover mills mall. I have been there, MOG, and other locations for the years I have been here. My friends have had cars broken into on premier nights multiple times. Movies do that especially at night.
I won't call them perps. I will call them kids a little younger then me, maybe 19. Both were black. With shorts that look like pants, and obvious bling. I really don't care that they were black, no one has any real business trying to talk to you at 2 am in the first place. If its an emergency you got cell phones and mall security to wave down.
I don't need to call the cops. Haven't you ever heard that anything you say will be used against you? There was no reason. You can call the police on suspicious persons though. I have done it before. I just really didn't care at the moment. I just wanted to ****.

David, when I switched sides, I was on the left and needed to be on the right. She was in front, so I pulled her right arm with my left and got her behind me as we walked. so, she wasn't in front. No line of sight loss if thats what you were thinking.

Wheeler, I don't mean to be offensive, but you do, of course, realize that cell phones can be operated while non stationary, right? Would it have hurt to call the police while you were driving away, and report two suspicious people who seemed to be casing for victims? The police would do a drive through, if the people were up to no good they would probably make themselves scarce at that point.

Your sarcasm is clever, but honestly, think these things through before you post.

uhhhh

I can't disagree enough with the idea that the police would have accomplished much. Even HAD they done a drive through, what would they do? Arrest the guys? For what?

This story is related and designed to advise how important situational awareness is. This might have been nothing. Likely it was nothing. It might have been something else though.

I thought about editing the comment to something like; I hear you, but I think it wouldn't solve anything.

I think the main thrust of the story was a reminder on situational awareness instead of what I should have done theater. I do hear you and agree that perhaps calling the cops might have been better than not calling the cops.

So, unfortunate choice of words on my part.

kyo, it sounds like your situational awareness saved you a mugging. Even BGs (at least some of them) have instincts that help them differentiate soft target from hard targets. You identified a potential threat and then sent a clear message that you weren’t an easy mark.

While calling the police to report the incident might be nice, I don’t blame you for not doing it. It’s hard to justify a phone call concerning a non-crime especially when police sometimes won’t even respond to a confirmed crime. I live in a small town. If I reported such an event to them, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a patrol car drive through within 5 minutes. But the larger town that I used to live in just a few miles away, it would be a waste of time. In fact, a better solution would be to call mall security.

A police presence can be a strong deterrent. One of my first jobs was working nights at a fast food joint. They were having alot of problems with undesirables hanging out in the parking lot and causing problems after sundown. Management began offering police a 50 percent discount. As far as I know, there were never any arrests made, and only one situation in which a LEO was involved with mediating a dispute. The problem with the loiterers was over with, however. It only took the occasional drive through by the Police to accomplish this.

Situational awareness

About 30 years ago I was walking to the subway on 110th in Manhattan. As a walked past a liquor store, a guy who was loitering in front of the store started following me up the street. About 6 or 7 houses ahead was another guy, lingering on a stoop.

Their tactic was for one of them to confront me at the same time as the other was to jump me from behind.

My tactic was to simply cross the street and keep on walking, which I did.

Looking back over my shoulder, they looked so confused. It was as if I had disappeared. There I was only 20 feet away but they didn’t try anything else, just turned around and walked away.

What I took away from this experience was that the best defensive weapon is between your ears. Keep your head in the game; be aware of your situation, plan your actions and then act on your plan.
