First off, I frequent this site because I believe the majority here are responsible, knowledgeable people. But there are some who, from my perspective, detract from the values and rights we are trying to protect.

Sometimes we provide the ammunition for our opposition.

I cringe every time I read about someone's "new toy". We do NOT have toys! I shudder when someone makes statements about having "fun" with their weapon(s). It would probably be more prudent to just say they "enjoyed" the time. Again, when "boolits" are mentioned, it probably sounds to the opposition that we are a bunch of illiterate mouth-breathers...reinforcing their preconceptions. I'm sure there are other instances.

Use some common sense.

I know I'll get a bunch of backlash over this, but I just had to express myself.

That's funny Creek. :) That was a funny movie.

To the OP, I hear what you are saying but I don't think this is as big a problem or really used by others against us gun owners. Sure, it makes some people or owners not so bright, or maybe just they are joking around. None of this will really help get guns banned though. I do agree that as gun owners we need to be good representative and watch what we say. The mods are good about shutting that down.

I think the real big problem is when some nut job guns down a bunch of people in a theater or a school. That is the problem and events like that have been the reason for bans in other countries are are the excuse the anti's use in this country to push their same agenda. The other thing that is a big problem is unsafe usage and storage. I HATE reading about some kid getting shot because people store loaded guns. That is very preventable and it hurts the most innocent . . .kids.

Good points though, that and not spreading the assault rifle term. (a salt rifle = a rifle made of salt).

Now "fun" is a bad thing, but its synonyms aren't?

I implore YOU to use some common sense before disparaging others.

FWIW - I do read good!

toy
/toi/
Noun
An object for a child to play with, typically a model or miniature replica of something.
An object, esp. a gadget or machine, regarded as providing amusement for an adult: "in 1914 the car was still a rich man's toy".

Just because anti's have left reality on the table doesn't mean we have to quake in fear and succumb to their incorrect mindset

When someone is wrong and you are right, you don't "negotiate" down to the "truth". You stand your ground in defense of the facts. Guns can be "toys" in every definition of the word, and judging a man solely on his use of the term "boolit" is ignorant. Those are facts.

I cringe every time I hear someone trying to read or interpret meaning where there is none in order to disparage their fellow human beings. That such behavior exists does not make it right, and it is not my duty or obligation to accommodate it.

BTW, I own many firearms that have no other purpose than to provide me entertainment, thereby TOYS.... and I cast boolits. You are asking me to support other's misguided disdain and prejudice by succumbing to the same mindset of danger and fear.

The term boolit is used when talking about a lead cast bullet. Not sure why that is a bad thing. Certainly easier to say than lead cast bullet.:)

Values and fun are two different things, either you are new at this, or are taking yourself way too seriously. We are not soldiers here, only sportsmen, and professionals who share a common interest. Many of us have many guns, and at some point some do become toys, because we use them when we want to have fun. Not all are used to shoot people with, although any gun may be capable of doing that, very few actually do.
Most of the guys here shoot for fun at some point, even if they "work with guns for a living".
Hunting is also considered by most to be fun, as you can buy "meat " in a butcher shop. So where you get off judging what others consider fun is way out in left field.
And guns cars, boats, etc. although they can serve many purposes, are also a lot of fun to play with.
Very few people buy a 50 caliber pistol, or a 338 Lapua magnum for any other reason than it's a heck of a lot of fun to shoot, unless we have a lot of mercenaries dropping in, "that's a joke".

As has already been pointed out, this was hashed and rehashed a couple of weeks ago. Letting the opposition define the words used in the debate means you've already lost. I have my toys, and I play with them. They're toys that keep my family safe. It's no less a toy than my 1985 Chevy 4x4. The fact that I can get meaningful work done with it doesn't change that fact.

Matt

I don't own weapons. Some of my guns are toys, and some are tools, but none are weapons until used as such. Just like the 6ft breaker bar in my garage. So you may dislike the use of "toys", I dislike the use of "weapons".
