Quietly strolling over to inform somebody after the fact does not do anything about the guy handling his rifle while people are downrange. That is something that needs to be corrected immediately, that is not something for a little friendly chat off the side in a few minutes.

The way I see it, the OP has gone on and on in this thread defending his actions of handling a rifle with people downrange on a cold range...this makes me reasonably believe OP was less than willing to follow good solid safety rules and makes me believe that it wasn't an "attention whore" problem so much as a "the rules don't apply to me" problem.

Handling rifles while people are downrange is deadly serious business.
Look, I simply stated how I would handle it with a new member. I see no need to go off like a Marine Corps Drill Instructor like I can embarrass a new member as punishment. I really do not care how someone else would go about handling a new member's first offense. Look Warp, you have your method and I have mine. I am not about to enter a debate on rifle range etiquette. So I guess you were there as you know the layout and any distances involved? Amazing.

I agree that the original poster has gone over and over the subject, I also agree he should have made it a point to study the rules and regulation. I am merely saying as a range officer how I would handle it. Others may handle it differently.

You have one side of the story from someone who continually attempts to justify his actions in every post, while never taking responsibility for his actions.

There are two sides to every story, and continually harping on the alleged demeanor of the person providing the correction for the infraction is pointless.

Frankly, I'm tired of the whining. Own the fact you screwed up and get on with your life, or find another gun range or club - the solution to the self-created problem is not the difficult.

I don't think anybody went off like a Marine Corps drill instructor, is what I'm saying.

What would you do if the person disagreed and told you there was nothing wrong with handling a rifle while people are downrange?

Keep in mind, you only have to deal with one RO a day, while he has to deal with many and probably half of them gives him some sot of lip service. I know my attitude might change after a while.

Man warp you must like to argue on the internet cause if I'm not mistaken your the one who got me a week ban cause I didn't agree with you.

Anyways.....

As I said in one of my post I get that I broke a rule that was never told to me.

As far as me justifying my actions I could see if I was an actual member, been there 5yrs, actually knew every little rule they had, HAD THE BOLT IN THE GUN AND THE GUN ACTUALLY POINTING DOWN RANGE AT A PERSON then tell me hey no touching the gun not start screaming at me like some crazed hillbilly.

the day I was there was an public shoot, pay $20 and shoot. no one bothered to tell anyone no putting turret caps on a rifle with no bolt in the gun.

My main point of being ticked at this guys was I shot my rounds pulled the bolt out of the gun and laid the bolt and rifle on the bench and started cleaning up brass and trash. the guy looked right at me and said you take the bolt out when you transport the rifle? I said no, I took it out too cool the bull barrel down a bit before I put it in the case. I then placed the rifle in the case with bolt still laying on the bench, B.S. with a guy I knew and seen the cap on the bench laying next to the bolt that's not in the rifle so there's no possible way for the gun to discharge and he starts screaming at me. If this guy was an actual range safety person appointed by the club then maybe i wouldn't be so hot about it. the club doesn't have range officers when people shoot. you just come and go as you please. no one watching you.

For those that replied about join or don't join I appreciate it. ill give it a shot. I've been driving by almost every night after work and no one is ever there. wont have to worry about SHOOTING anyone but myself then.

Not handling or touching guns while people are downrange on a cold range is extraordinarily common and should be expected as the norm. And any good range (IMO) is very specific with this rule, with no exceptions because of a bolt being out, or the rifle currently pointed up, or anything. It's just flat out no touching guns while range is cold/people are downrange, and it is a big deal. Now you know

A similar example I am familiar with through appleseed: When the line is cleared every rifle is set down on the line with the bolt locked open, magazine out, safety on, chamber flag inserted into the chamber, and an RSO then verifies that status of every rifle, and reports the line is safe to the line boss, before anybody can go down range. Once all of that is done, nobody touches a rifle. Period. Doesn't matter that there is a chamber flag on an open bolt with no mag and it was checked by an RSO and watched the entire time. Because touching rifles with people downrange is a BIG DEAL

What happens if you handle your rifle in that scenario, and other person, maybe a new guy, sees this and thinks it is okay, and starts handling his...only its bolt isn't out...and maybe certain other things aren't the same either...

Additionally, people who are downrange may not know the condition of your rifle. They might just know they turn around and the guy behind them is handling a rifle while they are downrange. Nobody wants or likes that. Then maybe they get used to it because it's just the guy with his bolt out. Only one time it isn't the guy with his bolt out, and somebody gets shot by a .30-06 while at the target line (happened at a range near me that I use)

Guess I should have locked this the first time the safety argument was exhausted. Stupid me.

Ok, ok, I think the safety point is made. Now the OP's going to go enjoy shooting at his new club.

Maybe he should simply check back in with us in a few months or a year and let us know how things have gone. I'm going to predict he'll find that he's has smooth sailing from here on.
