Today I went down to my local sheriff's office to apply for a permission slip from our benevolent superiors, so that I might be able to purchase a pistol when they deign to mail me my permits. This wasn't anything new to me, of course, but it had been several years since I got permits and the application form seemed a lot more intrusive since the last time I filled one out. Regardless, it really irritates me that this is a requirement at all and I am writing my state representative and senator about it.
I have heard before that NC's law requiring a permit to buy a handgun originated in the Jim Crow era and was designed to give local authorities the latitude to deny blacks the ability to buy handguns. Does anyone have a link to a reputable source with information about this? I plan to use such information in the letter I write, in addition to how contrary the whole idea is to a supposedly free society.
Any other North Carolinians here interested in writing your state reps? I will be glad to share my letter with anyone else who wants to use it as a basis for their own letter.
