October Centerfire Match:

I'd like to try my M15 with and without scope along with a .22 Hornet but I only have one day left to shoot. That would be pushing it too much if things are busy. I still would like to give the Rimfire another go round if the other benches are clear of the loud n' boomers.

It seems that a 1/9 twist would be good for 52-69 grain bullets. The 1/8 would be 69 to 80 grain pills.

Thanks Judah,
That's what I've been hearing. I'll get me some 65 and 69 grainers and start loading a few at a time to see where it prints. Fortunately I have a 100 yard indoor and occasionally outdoor range available close by. The indoor one works really well for working up loads. The only disadvantage is I can't readily set up a chronograph. Have to do that outdoors.

My optometrist called this afternoon and I don't have my initial consult with the eye surgeon until the 27th so I still have a couple weeks to get some experiments done.

Alright, managed to get this one done.

First up, and I freely admit I probably cheated, I shot my benchrest gun: 6 PPC with a 42x Nightforce. Winds were about 10 from 5 o'clock and gusting but it is what it is.

Best I can figure is a 98-99/100.

Here's the gun:

Next I shot my FDE AR-15. Used 77 Nosler Custom Competition bullets. Optic is a Nightforce 2.5-10. Wind died down but so did the sun. I finished this about 715pm.

My calculations say an 82. I was pretty pleased with this one minus the flyers, completely my fault, on bulls B and D...but what do you expect with mixed brass? :p

And the gun...

I don't know what you mean by cheating. Your gun sounds like it falls into the Unlimited/Target class. That is impressive shooting.

My .22 Hornet better have its "A" game on. I better not show the target to it because it will be cowering in the back of the cabinet like a scaredy cat. lol

Orlando, by the looks of it you have an 81, which isn't nearly as bad as you make it out to be.

esheato, IIRC at the close of last month's match we decided to allow benchrest rifles...so your legit. I don't recall what we decided WRT machine rests (I believe we decided that they, too, are GTG, but I'm not entirely certain), but either way I think your in the clear if you shot it as pictured.

:)

Yup, shot as pictured. Not sure if you're familiar with the joystick rests but it's essential for Varmint For Score type competition.

This was fun...thanks!

That is something I'm always fighting with at the range. Getting the damn thing at the right height. I usually look for wood blocks and put a bull bag on top. Sometimes the blocks are used up or they rock just a little on the table. If I can't find any then the bull bag is used not the way it was designed. Then I have the rear bag all the way back into my shoulder because the gun is perched up so high. I just can't seem to get everything hunky dory.

Is the rest in your picture a "joystick" type?

I am, though I typically stick to bipod+prone. That said, I don't shoot any benchrest or varmint competition. Glad you enjoyed it!

Yep, see the "handle on a stick" at the rear of the rest, that's the joystick. It helps you "steer" the rifle for quick target transitions.

I don't want to detract from the intent of this thread...PM inbound.
Not looking to get totally off topic with discussion of the best this or that, but if it's centerfire rifle shooting related and informative I think it's fair game. Barring discussion of equipment and technique is counterproductive IMO.

:)

Made it out for a fast last attempt at the Centerfire Unlimited Target Division
They still have the range tore up, they are trying to get concrete poured around the benches. Right now its a muddy mess, they are also working on a 300 yd range which will be nice
I was having some pierced primers last time out. I replaced the firing pin and all went well today

Armalite AR15 Match barrel ,Weaver Super Slam 4x20x50 scope
Bench, front rest rear bag
100 yds
Hornady 75 grain Match

I'll let you score this Mav as dummy me still havent figured it out:(

AR15 Carbine, 16" lightweight barrel, standard M16A2 sights on a fixed carry handle, just plain vanilla honed single stage trigger. Prone, unsupported, 50 yards. Ammo was 55gr FMJ. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that it was a mixed mag of 5.56 ball and .223 until I was partway through, so the varying velocities may have had something to do with the rather impressive results. :D This target was my second, the first wasn't worth talking about. The rifle is capable of some decent groups, better than I am, but it's certainly no match rifle.

A=3+2+1+1+1=8, B=4(just broke the line)+2+1=7, C=2+2+1=5, and D=4+2+1+1=8, for a grand total of 28. :D

Oh, well, at least I got out to the range!! Could have wasted the morning doing yardwork or something instead. Gotta have those priorities in place.

Yes, well, your target looks very nice up there Orlando. I'm just glad when I have time to go shoot.

esheato, I think you may have incorrectly score your second target. Its hard to tell but I came up with 74??

Yah, I think you're right, I tallied a 75....could we get an official judges ruling?

This is why I couldnt figure out how to score my target as I was coming up with different scores looking at yours:)
If you say 75 thats good for me, its hard to tell from pics sometimes

75 looks close enough for me.
