Alright, finished my built about 2 weeks ago. Just had it tested last monday with the current setup.
lower: Essential Arms: 100
LPK: CMMG: 60
stock: CAA 6 position: 80
upper: DS ARMS nitride coating M4 carbine style 5.56: 275
BCG: DD full auto: 155
CH: SOG armory: 20

total:690

EXTRAS:
Quad rail: Primary Arms: 45
M3 clone w/ high mount 1/3 co-witness: Primary Arms: 80
rear sight: UTG: 30
Magwell grip: Never Quit: 20
UTG pistol grip: 15
FG: Grip bipod knock off from old 10/22: free
total: 190

grand total of: 880

notes:
* Got a deal for 10 magpul mags with windows (1st gen - cover doesn't latch on the bottom) for 100 shipped.
* The red dot has good reviews at AR15.com and the importer said it's 80% clone of the real one in terms of durability. Great vendor, got my items in 3 days.
* did the "unnecessary" barrel break in just in case. 1 rd/ mag - bolt locked back for 10 mags and cleaned after every mag. Then 2 rds/ mag for 5 mags, bolt locked open, cleaned after every mag. Then 2 rds/ mag for 8 mags for mag reliability test. Cleaned after 16 rds and that was it.
* UTG sight is shooting high 6" at 50 yds. It was already at the lowest setting. This seems to be the norm with UTG rear sight assembly. Need to raise front sight post 1-2mm. The red dot hovers just about that much from the front post and is dead on at 50 yds.
* It's an accurate rig, much better than me. All 16 shots went into 3-4" circle with lots of one-holer. Trigger is much better than standard RRA lower (my friend's) but it's still no target trigger either.
* I have difficulty shooting since it was cold and i had to wear my bulky jacket. Not to mention the shooting window/ bench is so little i can't even use the extended grip pod lest i shot the top frame of the window.
**** I have reservations before i shot it because it's a frankengun with parts thrown in BUT it is BORINGLY reliable and couldn't be more happy with it. I did soak the BCG in CLP and Ed's red right after i got it for about 2 days. Wiped it down. Soaked it again before the trip.
* Can not post target because they were late in calling cease fire (they told me they'd do it in 15 mins but after waiting 40 mins, i left) because it was slow, Monday slow.
* will fire more rounds for further reliability testing if i can find time to go before the new year.
* Ammo used are WWB 55 gr brass and steel monarch and wolf .223 55gr

edit: the 20 rounder is magpul and yes that is a 40 rd C Product mag just for kicks.

Nice! Here's the one I just did. I've built 3 of them so far...well, one was just slapping an upper on a lower, but the other 2 were from parts.

Whenever I take my kids to the range (12, 10 and 8 years old), they tend to steal my AR M4-gery and either shoot the .22LR conversion unit or 5.56. I finally decided I was going to build each of them an AR of their own, but start with just one for them to share. Then I thought, "HEY! Why am I building them a new gun when I could build ME a new rifle spec'd like I want?" Then they can just "inherit" one of my old ARs.

So, I've been acquiring parts over the last several months and slapped it together last weekend. Took it to the range today at lunch to sight it in...success! Flawless function and it was shooting right around 1 MOA with my crap "bulk" handloads of 55 gr FMJ and IMR4064. I like it!

Here's what I put together:
  • DPMS 5.56 lower receiver
  • YHM T-marked upper receiver
  • Sabre Defense BCG
  • RRA 2-stage NM trigger
  • Magpul enhanced triggerguard
  • VLTOR eMod stock
  • Ergo grip
  • Bravo Company 18" SS SPR barrel with Rifle Length Gas System -- had Steve at ADCO turned down to Gov't profile
  • YHM FF rifle length quad rail forearm
  • Tac-Latch II extended chage handle
  • Vortex FH
  • YHM flip up front sight - gas block
  • Brownells HK-style drum diopter BUIS
  • EoTech 511

I wanted an 18" barrel to give the little 5.56 bullet every chance to keep its velocity so it could do its work, but I also wanted a lightweight rifle. No one seems to make a pencil thin 18" barrel. So I had ADCO turn this one down (good price...only $65 for the work)

Here's a picture of the barrel through the handguard...you can see compared the the chamber portion to the left that the barrel is significantly thinner. In fact, the rifle weighs only 6.5 lbs unloaded. It is actually slightly lighter than my M4-gery. My similarly configured 6.8 SPC rifle with the full SPR barrel weighs a full pound more.

I will be changing a few things...I want a hooded front sight and a smooth forearm...thinking the YHM customizable FF tube. That said, I'm very happy...I love the smell of new rifles!

After loathing ARs for a good chunk of my early adult life, I tried one around 6 or 7 years ago and now they've kind of starting breeding like bunnies...

They've even taken on cartridges that they were never intended to fire...

haha, nice one or should i say, collection. How's that .50 (??) holding up. Is that bohica arms btw?

Nice gun. Good job on the build, and its got me craving to build that strippy DPMS lower I got in the safe.

Nice rifle! Welcome to the Nlack Rifle Club. Now, what will you build next??? (Ask me why I would ask such a question!)

my next built: a full wallet (this one kinda emptied it ya know). kidding aside, i think i'm just gonna shoot this a bit. I told my wife i wanted this before we have kids because after that my paycheck will be in the diaper funds instead of "fun" funds. But who knows, depends if i can find good deals by then. It took me about 2 months (4 paychecks) to save up and buy the parts.

oh btw "why did you ask that question sir?" :)

Thanks for the kind words gents. I prefer the term functional than tacticool myself. Also it's built with budget in mind.

My one and only AR "build". (not sure your standard AR kit assembly counts much for "building" it, it was easy as heck. But whatever...)

Stag lower, Delton kit w/ chrome lined barrel. Believe I have right around $700-ish in it if memory serves.

i got your sentiment, but it was just sort of a general term. i was looking for a del-ton kit as well but the wait time made me shop aroud and found the upper for relatively cheap.

i did fiddle around to fit the LPK for almost 2 hours to get the forward detent pin in.

chuwee81: The answer, sir!

DSCF0098.jpg

The current group, although a few changes have been made (I need a new pic). The top rifle is now an M4'gery (swapped uppers with my son), and the green furniture is on the A2.

Dang things just keep morphing!

chuwee, nice work. for your basic build, that's a pretty good price and not a bad selection. i've built quite a few guns on essential arms lowers and all have worked well. i've got 4 more builds in progress now. the DD BCG is good stuff. BCM would have saved you $15

i think most of your "extras" belong on airsoft guns though. let us know if you still like the utg stuff after you've fired a few thousand rounds. also, 'boring reliability' in 16 rounds? maybe a little premature there...

that is a HECKUVA deal on windowed pmags!

for mag reliability, you want to test the full range of the spring, not just the last couple of rounds, so you need to run 30 rnds through it.

Thanks for the comment Taliv but yea, some of the stuff are just add ons for a range gun so far. Just want a working AR for the best bargain possible...for now. Already thinking of adding a "real" free float handguard. The Grip-pod, even if the legs break, will still function as a forward grip at least :)

Also i have heard kit builds can sometime hit or miss, that's why i had the butterflies in my stomach. Will the bolt/mag lock back, the gas key hold up, the 2nd rd jam, etc, etc. I've seen factory ARs (2 of them, different days) ran single shot from malfs. So it's just kinda my expression of relief that everything works as it should. I got most of my mags loaded up so will run full mags next trip.

BTW DSG inc is still doing the 10 window Pmags for 100 bux last time i check.
