Original '62 Police vs Repro

Guys, the Capandball channel has a new video up comparing an original Colt 1862 Police to the reproduction made by Uberti. This is not my video, and is made by Balázs Németh from Hungary. This is the best black powder channel on YouTube that I have ever found, and this gentleman is to be commended for his work:



If you don't wish to or can't watch the video, in short the Uberti is an excellent replica and it is virtually identical to the genuine article. Even the cylinder and barrel of the original fit on to the repro frame and functioned properly. There are minor differences in the bore and chamber diameters (the repro is smaller) but that's about the only major difference.

I'd love to get one of these repros. I hear they tend to have a bit more problem with cap jams since there is less room due to the smaller cylinder, but that probably won't stop me. They are so beautiful. It looks to be a good size for packing around as well and maybe could work for small game hunting. Enjoy the video and subscribe to that channel!

Have you tried the Slix Shot nipples? They seemed to work better for me. Mike at Goons Gun Works can cure the cap problem as well.

The Slix Shots did nothing to cure the cap jams on my '51 Navy. But they are pretty!

The Pocket Police is a beauty!!! No other way to describe it, but you just can't look at them you have to handle one. Once you do, you'll buy it, guaranteed!!

You could get also the 6 1/2 inch barrel for small game and get the 3 1/2 inch or 4 1/2 inch barrel for packing around. Either way its a winning combination.

This revolver is one of my favorite black powder shooters. After shooting several hundred rounds through it I have experienced no misfires or cap jams.

The Pocket Police is our most natural pointer and a favorite of myself and my girls. Ours have 5-1/2" barrels and someday would like one with a 4-1/2" barrel.

I think the Pocket Police looks even better with a Pocket Navy cylinder, one of the fellas around here did that to his and it looks great. I'd also like a Pocket Navy, slightly lighter.

According to "Flayderman's Guide To American Antique Firearms", barrel lengths were 3-1/2" (Rare), 4-1/2", 5-1/2", & 6-1/2".

If I were to get a 4 1/2" bbl one, would it be too hard to load since the lever is shorter? Thanks!

I'd assume so. Look at how short it looks. My 5.5" Remington gets a bit painful after a few cylinders and use a rag to pad it.

I've considered very short loading levers and figured it would be fairly simple to use a cheater bar.

Yes, but I'd still want it to be concealable.

That is, after all, what these were meant for.

At which point reloading isn't much of an issue really. And if it is a quicker cylinder swap in a Remington would be a bit better I'd guess.

And concealable it would be with a shorter loading lever (if there is one). For myself I want a bit of ease while at the range or in the field, and that's the one thing the 3.5" barrel has against it. I must admit I've felt this would be rather cool and would also have a 5.5 or 6.5" barrel as you can't buy it with the shorty barrel. But I'm not of a caliber who could likely shoot small game in the head with it at 25 yds, though I've not really shot from a rest.

Quite frankly, the way I view it, is that if you are dealing with a typical run of the mill thief just producing a gun or even firing it changes thing rather quickly. Nobody wants to deal with that.

Now if you owe a nefarious group money or "wronged" a gang, or are dealing with someone high on some serious drug, well that's another story. And sleeping with someone's wife might put you in this category as well...

I loaned the little gun I posted above to a 13 year old girl. She took it to the 4H Texas state games and won the 1st place medal for black powder revolver.

Overall she won 15 medals, 13 of them 1st place. One of the medals she won was for black powder rifle. I loaned her my T/C Hawken 50 cal and she won with that also.

I really enjoy shooting the 62s..I have two one I did some work to cap post , bolt block, action stop ..a la the Goon ..the other I cleaned up the hammer doesn't jam so I'm happy

Thanks for sharing the video. The '62 Police is one of the very nicest looking cap and ball revolvers of all time. I made an avenging angel out of one a while back.

I didn't find a 4.5" at a reasonable price, but Dixie still has the 5.5" still on sale for $295. Just ordered one. You people are a bad influence.
