Is this for real??? While surfing threw the web looking for "Tactical self defense" and "Street self defense" I came across this guy. (Paul Vunak)

I have never givin much credit to tradtional martial arts when it comes to real life fights. This guys stuff looks like it might have some clout??? I know that it can't replace actual training like in a gym but just curious.
I do have 10 years of wrestling and 2 state medals but going to the ground fighting is something I would rather avoid.

P.S. I can't find any place around here that has the type of training that I'm looking for.

The ignorant sociaty that I live in has an era of, "oh, nothing will happen, this is a safe place."

Vunaks philosophy works because it's simple. Simply put - Use devestating blows (head butts, knees, elbows, straight blast) to constantly press the attack and defeat the threat. I've never trained with him directly, but I used to train with guys that Vunak lists as instructors, and those guys went to CA a few times to train with him. Simple and effective tools, used to continually press the attack until the other guy either gives up, or can't fight anymore. It's not rocket science, it's fighting.

Paul Vunak is the real deal ... meaning the guy knows how to fight. However, have heard mixed things about his instruction. In any event, not sure where you are at but if you want to get some training at a place, check out if you have one of these places near you:

Excellent philosophy of "alive" training similar to "force-on-force" concept used in firearms tactical training. If you just want some video training, check out the Shredder video offered here:

Hope this helps!

Vunak's good. Very direct and efficient if I remember from the video's of the early/mid-90's.

Jeet Koon Do Concepts stuff. The tapes I saw were self-defense based and concentrated on a near pre-emptive blast attack to allow immediate flight. Emphasized improvised environmental weapons.

He was on the leading edge of the transition away from traditional martial arts back in the day, did the usual training of the Teams (but who didn't back then?) and I'd still call his stuff worth looking at.

Many would be martial artist lack the patience and self discipline to add the skills they need to their bag of tricks. Also many schools stress kata or form over practical self defense. Look for one that mixes all of these elements.

Vunak is pretty good. As it has been said, he doesn't really complicate his approach with needless items. If you want a good intro to self defense combatives check out the videos by Carl Cestari.
