How about a television series about self defense?

Next week, on The Outdoor Channel, "Personal Defense TV" begins airing.

Basically, we went to the S&W Academy, Valhalla, Gunsite and Thunder Ranch to see how the pros teach various personal defense techniques.

One venue says it can take someone who has never shot a gun and have him/her shooting and moving though a low-light shoot house within 30 minutes.

Each week there is a segment with Massad Ayoob (LFI), as well as a segment with Clint Smith (Thunder Ranch, Oregon).

Some of what you see will be standard fare for old hands in the self-protection game, but it will be new and exciting for those who have never been to a gunfighting school.

There will, however, be some interesting things for everyone, no matter how extensive your background.

It was fun to put it together. I created the concept last December, pitched it, got the okay from everyone (including the network), and we moved fast to get it all shot.

Low light, handguns, rifles, shotguns, tactics, avoidance, etc., are all covered.

Should be fun.

(I host the show, but I depend on the real experts to deliver the info. In fact, they sometimes use *ME* as the dummy for takedowns, etc. Yeah. Fun. uh huh.)

Air days and times for Personal Defense TV

Thanks Tom, sounds great. Now if we can get PDN, the Personal Defense Network going things will be really on a roll!! :D

Is it on the web? I don't get that channel with my cheapy analog cable. :(

Going to do the NTI? Do some local outfits like my buddy Karl at www.krtraining.com.

Great idea, BTW.

There are no plans for streaming the show on the web right now, but I'm pushing for us to explore that technology. Well, not streaming, but downloadable shows.

If they can do it for Desperate Housewives, why can't we?

<grin>

I think it is about time one of the outdoors channels did something like this. I believe I've seen polls that show the #1 reason American's buy firearms is for self-defense, but virtually every single firearms-related program on TV is about hunting.

Thanks for pushing this, Guntalk. And definitely get it on the web if you can!

Cool, I'll add it to my DVR along with cowboys, Shooting Gallery, Guns&Ammo, and American Rifleman. Hopefully Shooting USA comes back as well.

Never mind, I see that Shooting USA starts Sep 30 on Outdoor Channel! Damn Time Warner for bundling TOC with that stupid "sports Variety" pack, but I guess it is worth the $6.50/mo. If only they had HD Outdoor Channel....

Nice. But it seems a little strange that "self defense" as defined by your choices consists entirely of high-priced gun training.

gun related TV series/American Handgunner

I'm suprised no TV producers or studios have put a firearm/shooting TV series like this before. It's a great idea :D .

I do film/TV work and was talking to some people about a TV series based on a major gun magazine like American Handgunner or Combat Handguns.

I'm sure this new program would get a positive response.

It's mostly a matter of going where there are facilities and instructors available. We can go to Gunsite, for instance, and get shows about rifles, shotguns, handguns, low light, edged weapons, etc., all in one location.

I would suggest that these are some of the most recognized and respected venues. As such, doesn't it benefit the viewers to see what the top schools are teaching?

It was particularly fun to be able to work with Massad and Clint, and to get their individual styles on camera. While they are quite different from each other, they are both very good on camera.

Tom

What's strange about featuring so called high priced schools? Personally, I'm grateful to be able to see what techniques they teach since it's not real likely I will be able to attend one of the top schools any time in the foreseeable future.

Then me old mom used to say, "Some people'd gripe if you gave 'em water without ice in hell..."

Great idea, I'll be looking for the show. I'd love to see what goes on at a high priced gun school.

Perhaps, at some point, we can get some tips or drills to do for us poor folks when we go shooting paper plates in the woods.

Good luck with the show.

Drills? <grin>

Each episode of Pesonal Defense TV ends with Clint Smith doing a segment we call "Skills Drill." It's your homework assignment. Better get the VCR or Tivo ready. Clint talks fast!

From a Television Hater

Guntalk,

What are you doing to me?!

I stopped watching TV several years ago - too much filth and stupidity. I am a teacher and I encourage (unsuccessfully, I might add) my students to not watch TV and spend their time in physical activity or with a great book. I am the greatest proponent of eliminating television from our culture.

And now, you have me all in a moral quandry. Between all the Braves baseball I have been missing and your new show, I might resubscribe to cable.:what:

All joking aside, I do not watch TV, but I am thrilled that you are trying to put something of true quality on the television airwaves. I will probably be asking my father-in-law to tape your show for me. Sounds awesome!

It might be fun if Clint makes fun of fat computer scientists with guns or calls some folks doodyheads as he once did in his column.

I'll get better cable to watch that! :D

Also have Mas explain his three rules for old men! :D

The three rules of the Old Guys' Home, which sadly I wasn't clever enough to come up with myself:

1. Urinate at every opportunity.
2. Never trust a fart.
3. Never waste an erection, even if you're alone.

But it seems a little strange that "self defense" as defined by your choices consists entirely of high-priced gun training.

A retired detective once told me he'd seen more than one martial arts expert lying on a slab.

There's a reason we say, "Sure as shootin'" and not "Sure as a judo hold."

Thanks for putting the show together. I've got the recorder set.

It's a little thing, but I don't like the expression "gunfighting school."

Tom,

Thanks again for having Valhalla as part of this project. As the new kid on the block, I consider it an honor to have been involved....

We are looking forward to seeing the final product and look forward to taping more next season!
