My dad was a big proponent of 22LR for home defense - pop pop pop - you put 3 rounds in the intruder before they know they've been shot. etc etc... But I don't think too many people are going to find themselves thinking "Should I get this Ruger 9mm PC Carbine or should I get this Ruger 10/22 ? Hmmmm, which one should I buy ?"

This poll is focused on centerfire auto loading pistol cartridges, that's for sure. :)

Chicharrones,

Took the Special Weapons SW5 (HK94/MP5 clone) out tonight. It's always fun. A couple of my buddies got to try it out. Before I knew it we had gone through ~150 rounds of 9MM. Good thing it's only semiauto or it would have been a very short night.

I need to fix an extraction/ejection issue on the SW45 and bring it out some time as well.
You know, I was thinking about this -- three of us in our little shooting group have the Beretta CX4 Storm in 9. Two of the guys have the HiPoint in 9. I've shot them, but prefer the Storm. Not coincidentally, the three of us with the Storm also have Beretta 92s.

Oh, and at dinner we ordered a plate of chicharrones for the appetizer.
You sure you don't want to make the trip down to SoFla?

Sounds like y'all had an awesome time. I sure would like to come across the Gulf to Florida! I just can't pull it off this year. College age kids are eating all my funds. :D

There are $500 ARs out there chambered in 9mm, but I feel like I'd have to be an AR expert to tell if they really are a good value at $500 I don't like the AR platform to begin with so I never took the time to learn what components are where on the price/quality quadrant. Most of the 9mm ARs I see are in the $600 to $800 price range. Some are obviously more like the CMMG, Wilson Combat, JP Enterprises and others.

There aren't a lot of reviews out there on the $500~ish AR carbines, but from the reviews I'm watching on the Ruger PC Carbine, it seems like a quality product for a decent price. I've come across some bad reviews of some of the AR rifles in $500 range.

So unless these $500 ARs start racking up some fantastic reviews, I'm left to think that the Ruger is better value.

Since I already have an MPX (and absolutely love it), and recently sold my Sub2K, I put the Ruger carbine and the Linda. The Ruger looks awesome with the changeable magwells and the takedown feature (although I am waiting for them to come out with a .40 version) and the Linda seems to be a very good design from what i have read and just has a sort of classic look to it.

I am interested in both the PTR and PSA new HK mp5 clones... badly as a pistol with a brace n converted later to a SBR

I understand the appeal of a short firearm that can be "stabilized" with a brace, but these pistols / SBRs have 4" to 6" barrels on them. Ballistically speaking they're not exactly a carbine.

Well to be fair, more like 5.5" on a K size to 8.8" on a fullsize like PTR's new offering, so about twice the typical pistol barrel length.

Again... I will say, whatever you consider buying, make sure it comes apart easily to clean it. 9mm carbines run dirty. If the gun is a pain to tear apart, it becomes a chore, and the fun factor goes down considerably. Thats where the AR shines, ease of maintenance.

This is exactly why I was also considering the Uzi and Beretta. I don't know if the other carbines on the poll (other than ARs) take down easily for cleaning or not.

The Hk types take down very easy, just one stock pin and viola. The trunnion/chamber area is a bit difficult to get to though.

If you like clean guns don't get a high point. You have to break out your junior mechanics tool set to get it appart. Luckily if you look at the design I don't think any amount of crud would foul it up. The manual says to clean it every 2000 rounds or something like that.

Lucky for me I don't like cleaning guns and I very rarely do it beyond a wipe down or foaming the bore. I just cleaned my LC9s for the first time after about 1500 rounds.

I don't want a PCC, I want a 9mm upper. That fits onto a normal AR lower. And a reliable drop in block.

LOTS of AR-ish dedicated PCCs, built for special, often shortened, lowers. Not what I want. I want a PCC upper to swap to so I can bring it to IDPA and increase my carbine experience/training time on the same system.

Many of your options are cool and if I had unlimited safe space, money, time to shoot them I'd get back into HK94s or get the 9mm Tavor, etc. But, first I want this.

By the poll, I'm in the minority here, but I run a Keltec Sub2k. Got the "multimag" version and swapped out the magazine release to the S&W 5900 series mags. That way, it's compatible with the pistol AKA truckgun. Same ammo/same mags. To me, it's the old SAA and lever action carbine idea of yesteryear brought forward. Back then, it was same ammo in both. Now, for me, same ammo and same magazines. Besides that, how many of us have ever fired a double stack pistol with a 33 round happy stick??
