Is the Sig in 9 mm a good choice for a pistol to defend against home invasion? A friend wants to buy a model 226 which holds a 20 round magazine. It looks nice to me.

I like the 9mm for HD. I find it's a good all purpose caliber with a good capacity, good terminal performance with the right ammo, and while loud not the ear splitter/blinder than .357 tends to be.

I have often thought I would grab my 1911 for bump in the night duty, but really, my FNX-9 would probably get the nod. SInce I don't keep a spare 7 round .45 mag stuffed into the waistband of my PJ pants:neener:, I like having 17 rounds at my disposal rather than having to fumble with another mag. Plus, I have a light mounted to the FN.

During daylight hours, 1911 all the way.

I think the Sig is a good choice:)

Just another plus for my SR9c... carry all day with the 10 round mag... at night it goes on the night stand with a 17 round magazine.

Best of both worlds.

Big Shrek many here may not be old enough to appreciate your post. The Calico held 100 rounds and was used by the F B I as I recall using a laser red dot sight for mob control. They would put a red dot on a perps chest and then tell him that the red dot could be replaced by 100 rounds of 22 cartridges. Most surrendered rather quickly.

Just reread your post. Does the Calico come in 9 mm now? Impressive.

I'm comfortable with my 9MM Shield with JHP's. In NY our 'Progressive' gov has forced us law abiding folks to only a 7 rd capacity in a mag. I keep an x-tra in the tube for 8rds. I'd prefer 17-18 rds myself. That's another reason I'm moving to TN next year. Bought the house already!!!!

I usually have a Sig 191145acp on the nightstand, although there's a 12 ga. W/ 00 buck close by. Depends on how big the threat. A Sig 9mm will work fine though. As well as a 380 or a 22. Most burglars don't carry guns unless you provide them one. A home invasion is not as common , but they're likely armed with something. A blinding 500 lumen light with optional strobe is also always on the nightstand too.

Didn't a judge overturn that specific part of the safe act?

The Sig is a good quality gun, so I'll say yes. But I'll qualify that by saying that any good quality, reliable gun would be good for that purpose. Everyone trains slightly differently, everyone is proficient with different weapons, and everyone has their own preferences.
A Sig 9mm would do just as well as a 9mm from S&W, or Ruger, or Glock, or H&K or whatever.
Once to get to good quality guns, it has much more to do with the user than the gun.

I have a Walther 9mm PPQ, and a Sig .45 Carry Scorpion. The Walther will hit anything I aim it at. The Sig is almost as accurate. I think for night home defense I prefer the Sig because it has tritium night sights. On the other hand, if I put night sights on the Walther it would be my first choice for night defense.

Sig 226 is a solid gun, it'll serve you fine just fine for home defense.

My HD gun is usually my carry gun when its not on my hip (not often) so currently a Glock 21, 13+1 of .45 with 2 spare mags is plenty peace of mind for me.

When Capacity is limited, I find that size is better. Basically, a 40 or a 45. I like a Sig 239in 40 S&W but that's just me.

Agree with surfin. I'm a fan of 9x19 and have kept to them for years but in retrospect, here in CA where there is a 10 round limit and similarly in NY, I would recommend using a .45 or 10mm load.
If you have to trade down round count, you might as well trade up round size so long as you are comfortable shooting them and can fill the magazine to the states mandated max.
I'm not a fan of maintaining a HD weapon (personal reasons) but if I did, I would have a Glock 20 in the nightstand. No question.

I've carried a 9mm and I've carried a .45. I like the extra capacity of the 9mm. But I like a little more power too. The .40 is the best of both worlds IMO. That's what I carry now. 16+1 works for me.

A Sig P-226, in your friend's home invasion scenario, would be a great choice -- to get him from wherever he is over to wherever his shotgun or rifle are located.
