Hi, I'm planning to move from NJ to upstate NY in the next 1-1/2 to 2 years. Specifically Cherry Plain (Near Stephentown) in Renssalear County.

I wanted to know:

A) How hard is it to get your permits? Are they "restricted?"

B) Where can I find some good dealers and clubs/ranges? I would like to be able to shoot steel, IPSC, IDPA, Pins, etc...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Illan

Rens county is pretty easy to get a permit.Fill out forms, take safety class, have fingerprints and pictures,if you're not a felon ,in about 6 months, you're golden.Usually they are issued w/ hunting and target restrictions.Depending on the judge at the time, you could write a letter(after taking another safety class) and request that they be removed.I had mine taken off a couple of months ago.
Ranges:Nassau R+G(Rens. co)
Hendrick hudson R+G(rens. co)
Woodlawn R+G(Albany co.)
Watervliet R+G(albany)
Albany pistol club(Albany)
Iricois R+G(Schenectady co.)
Castleton R+G(Rens. co)
I belong to Watervliet, but shoot IDPA at Woodlawn.Go to IDPA.com and click on NY state and you'll get info on our IDPA club.(Capitol Region Defensive Pistol League)
Rens co is pretty gun friendly....good luck:cool:

For those that don't know NY - The permit is a state permit but issued by the county, each county having its own rules . I've had mine for many years , issued in Onondaga, it was quick and easy and unrestricted. I don't see any sense to a restricted permit but do applaude mandatory training.

Gotta ask you current New Yawkers: Does your PP allow concealed carry? Back in '79 when I got my New York Pistol Permit it did NOT allow concealed carry. Had to carry openly!:what: Kept it current while I moved from NY to GA, then didn't notify 'em when I moved to Utah. It says right on it "Good until Revoked" and they've never notified me of any revocation. I still have the original permit, but it doesn't have near enough of my handguns listed. Don't ever plan on going back permanent like, but was just curious about the current state of thing there.

METE -- PLEASE HELP

Mete:
I'm getting transferred to Syracuse, NY in the next month or so. I'm looking to get a pistol permit (unrestricted) when I relocate. Is Onondaga the easiest? What about Madison? Cayuga? Oswego? Any help you can provide would be most useful.

In NY you MUST carry concealed if you are going to carry

Not necessarily true. I live in Steuben County, and saw posted on this board a letter from the Dist. Atty of my county that, in his interpretation, open carry was legal. So, not saying it would not cause problems, but you wouldn't get prosecuted, at least in Steuben Co.

I live in Averill Park, Renn. county. Brunswick Sportsmans Club is right on NY Rt 2. really on the way to Berlin/ Cherry Plain. Nice 50 yd pistol range, and rifle range with backstops @100,200, and 300yards. Dues are around $45 ayear.
It took me three months to get my restricted " hunting/target pistol permit, then I waited a year, wrote a letter requesting a unrestricted permit and took the safety class.
Maybe two months went by and I got approved. Real easy. Prints, pictures, classes, and permit cost around $200 total.

Brat:Accurate Arms in Schenectady is great....not alot of guns in stock but he can get them overnight from most companies.Super low ammo prices.
Also Pistol Parlor in East Greenbush....more guns, little bit higher prices.
Neudeckers in Troy.....lots of stuff, small place, not sure about prices.
Taylor and Vadney ..Schenectady....never been there.
RJ:I'm in Schodack,we're practically neighbors......I've been trying to get a local THR shoot together...email me if interested...

Thanks alot guys! It seems that renn. County is a HELL of a lot nicer than NJ!!!!

I will have to transfer residence to my Mom's place about a year before I go so that I can have all my papers in order. From what I understand, if you move into NY, you can't bring your pistols with you unitl you have your license:mad:

I don't want to have to leave all of my handguns with a dealer for 6 months. Kinda defeats the purpose of owning them!

Bulldozer, first learn to spell it , SYRACUSE. Your permit is applied for and issued in the county you live. If I remember (25 years ago) they dropped the premises permit and only issued the carry. Best thing to do is to call Onondaga county pistol permit office and ask them. Also the law says you cannot bring pistols into the state without having them on your permit. The club I belonged to at the time was the Syracuse Pistol Club. And of course the permit will be stamped 'not valid in NYC'. You shouldn't have any problems.

Bulldozer, I live in Oneida county, just east of the 'cuse (Syracuse). Each county is a little different in how they handle permits. A LOT depends of who the pistol licensing officer is (Usually the most junior county judge, because the other judges don't want the work). SOme have no problem with an unrestricted permit, others never issue them. I think all the larger counties have assistant licensing officers who does the grunt work and passes the files on the the judge fo action. In oneida county it took about 3 months. Our current judge will issue unrestriced if you have a reason (carry cash, etc) but every judge is different and has the power to do pretty much as they please. If you are coming from out of state they may make you waite up to a year. My gf is just moved here from another county in NY and she has to waite a year, tho that may be just our local judges rule. Hope this helps
