Powder price spikes

This thread is hard on my wallet. I don't see 30 or 40 dollar primers coming back anytime when all the raw materials and labor are going through the roof it's no conspiracy it's supply and demand. I would buy a lot of primers if they came back to 60 or 70 per thousand. I shoot less now than I did a few years ago probably as often just lower volume more precision than 2 double taps to 5 targets. In my area powder can still be had for 35$ per pound.

Last year my opinion was that primers would settle at $50-60/K. What I did not take into account was Uncle Joe's Magic Economic Formula.
Now that inflation has reared its' ugly head - and it seems none have the cojones of the late Paul Volker - I have changed my opinion.

My current forecast is $65-80/K. I see that @Mark_Mark recently purchased primers at ~$52/K; I think that would be my 'Stock up now' price.

Having weathered several of these shortages, and having seen this one coming, I'm not hurting for any supplies, so I can afford to leave powder and primers on the shelf for you fellas.
However - at $50/K, if I see primers I'll buy some. I'm a bit thin on SRP - I think I'm down to 12K or so.

I was one of the pessimistic guys from the start and I did not want to be correct. Now there is talk of less Fed rate hikes due to the Russian invasion. Inflation will get even uglier. It's like they want terribly high inflation. IMO primers and powder will be the least of our worries but I'll stop right there with the doom and gloom.:) I see $80 as the new "good" price for primers and powder will probably go up a bit more too.

I bought 2 types of primers at $52. But it was a 1 brick/block/whatever limit per visit. I honestly got bored of chasing primers. It was fun, until I got my primer fixed and moved on.

Think of it this way:. You borrowed $50,000 to buy a BroDozer.
Would you rather pay it off with 2021 dollars, or 2023 dollars that are worth 15% less?
And, would you prefer the interest rate to be 2% or 5%?

Of course you want inflation, if you are a borrower.
And there is no bigger borrower than Uncle Sam.

^^^ BroDozer lol! They hate my Prius, especially with 55 mpg going uphill

Ever had that Prius serviced? Just saying, they are great... until something breaks.
all factory service. There was a issue with the engine start stop. Would stall at take off. Was scary because I sometimes would be stuck at the light and had to reset the engine. Was a software issue

Sadly but at Midway my last 8 pound powder purchase was $ 100 more than pre-pandemic, after tax and Haz-mat.

But I figure it will be to the roof (another $ 100 more) in another year between the current occupant of the White House and the Russians.

Minus a few panics, ammo and components were stupidly cheap in the 1990-2020 timeframe as compared to any time in history. We were spoiled, and may well be returning to a period where boxes of ammo have to last past the next magazine. If 500-1000 round weekends are important to you, you will need to either suck-it-up-buttercup, or make other sacrifices. That ATV or snowmobile in the shed will buy a lot of ammo or components.

I grew up during more frugal times. I don't even mag-dump .22LR, not even when it's cheap, not even from a semi-auto, not on a boat, from a goat, in a tree, on a spree, I do not mag-dump, Sam-I-Am!

If spray-n-prey is a person's modus operandi, it's fine by me but just not my style. I agree though that components were much pricier (relative to the value of the dollar) in the late 70's and early 80's compared even to today. Earning the $10 needed for a pound of Unique, a 100-count box of Speer 140gr. JHP and a couple sleeves of primers back then took a full day's labor for this 13-year-old kid. ;)

I was teen in the 90’s we had to spray & pray because our gats were really bad. Raven .25 ACP anybody? Cobria 9mm??? Mak90??? < actually a good gun

A quick pursuing of Powder Valley website shows 1lb powders running between $27-$34. Only slightly higher than pre-panic prices and a little less than what Gander Mountain charged before they went teets up.

Anyone willing to pay $80/lb would have to be pretty desperate
