question on MP5

I have a friend of a friend....I know what your thinking, just hold on. He is an FFL dealer and deals with ClassIII weapons. He has a shot out MP5 that apparently needs rebuilding. I don't know all the details on it, as my friend just told be the basics on it. Says you need to have it gone through and replace many parts before shooting it. Anyway. He is supposedly selling it for $1200. I don't know much on prices for these things, but even if it is in worn out shape isn't that a decent price for one? I would appreciate any sincere opinions.
 
I will be getting more details after this weekend. Its one of my buddies from the service and he will see him at drill this weekend, so hope its as good as he says.
 
Yeah, something seems to be fishy...

If the gun is indeed transferrable, buy it without thinking twice. You could rebuild the entire gun around the actual receiver and still come out over 10 grand under what they are going for.

Be very cautious about this though; you dont want to go messing with any shady machine gun dealings.

$1200 sounds like its a beat-up post-sample.

You can only buy it as an FFL/SOT with a LE demo request letter.
 
Sounds like a post-86 sample to me.

Maybe your buddy misunderstood his buddy, and the price is 12,000.
 
Considering parts kits alone are $1500+ these days, unlikely.

Chances are it's a semi-clone, but if it isn't, the registered receiver or sear alone is worth 10x what he's asking even if you have to rebuild it all.

*Any* C3 dealer would know that these days, honestly.
 
First I would check its status, see if it is form 4 or transferable to civilians if it is a SOT thing its a no go unless you are a FFL in the SOT area,

There are transferable Mp5's

If it is transferable get it. Right now transferable ones on the market are going for 16,000 so this may be SOT but it does not hurt to check.
 
By the way - on the subject of MP5 prices - why are the brand-new ones, straight from the factory to LEOs or similar, $1000+?

No, not meaning for reg'lar civvies.

Even the PDs have to pay $1000+ for new MP5s, as I understand it. Why would they be that expensive? FN sells M4s to the .mil for around $500, and I wouldn't expect parts cost to be that much higher on a decades-old submachine gun.
 
probably because it is a somewhat specialized weapon and doesnt have a constant demand

hk probably isnt selling thousands of them a month and a pd is probably only ordering 1-5 at a time

Haven't taken one apart in person, have you?

They're obscenely overengineered pieces of work, and even with the stamped receiver, the amount of milling/finishing etc and the roller-lock system itself cost a small fortune.

Cost to make one won't be substantially different than a full-size G3, and if I recall from an old article, those sold at gov't prices in the near-500 range in the early 80s in lots of 10k+.

The AR is a substantially simpler system, DI is good for that.

Factor in dollar-euro conversion (since they're not made here) and it gets worse.

Even clone guns for LEO use (back when POF still had prices up) the Paki MP5s were 1k+ on a letter.
 
Last time I looked MP5's w/ department direct pricing was about $700 per unit base. Add in fancy things like built in lights on the forearms, tritium night sights, etc. usually came out to close to $1k. Still fairly comparably priced to a high end brand name AR with accessories.

I'd pay $700 for a semi auto mp5 or ump, I'm sure many others here would too... too bad HK hates us. And those things are ugly w/ the 16 in barrels.

Post-samples used are over 1k these days, I see them listed doing searches on parts.

If they were still 700 it'd be worth getting them to torch, parts kits alone are $1500 now.
