I recently built a bull-barrel target .22 (Ruger 10/22) and then also bought a Volquartsen built 10/22 Bull Barrel Target model, and was playing "juggle the riflescopes" on these and my Ruger 96/22 and 77/22, and 10/22 International...

I got everything mounted up, and boresighted, and ready to go...

Today, I took a few types of ammo (8) and the 5 "box-magazine" fed Rugers out to my range, and diled the things in but good... with Eley Tenex and Remington "Standard Velocity Target" ammo, the two 10/22 bull barrelled guns and the 77/22 were grouping sub 1" at 100 yards (as expected) And the 96/22 and 10/22 International were carring 1.25" groups with the Eley Tenex and S.V. Rem Target... All guns liked the Winchester ammo (Wildcat and old "White Box target .22")... and the Blaser T-22 and a couple other loads were OK in all guns too... Federal Match .22 was the best of the less expensive stuff...

But.. the real surprise was the TOTAL FRIKKIN' LACK of quality in the Remington Thuinderbolt .22's... I took along a whole brick of it... to play with after I was done dialing these guns in... (I grabbed it because it was only $7.99 at my local sporting goods store...)

This crap (yes, it really IS CRAP!) had 20 or so misfires out of 500 rounds... (average of 2 rounds per box)... most these were tried again, in different guns... they APPARENTLY had absolutely NO priming compound... I got so pissed I even whacked 1 of the duds with a 3 pound one-handed sledge hammer (not smart, I know, but I have a temper with mechanical things that don't work!) and it went "bang"... no priming compound at all... it just smashed flat, with the lead still in the case... flat as in thinner than a dime...

Has anyone else had this problem with Remington rimfire ammo? sheesh... what a waste of $7.99 + .06% tax!

Yup, Thunderbolts are bargain basement stuff. Plenty of duds when I was learning to shoot with my 22/45.

Federal seems to work a little better overall. Out of a brick I typically get 2-3 duds, but they go off when rotated.

+1 to what Chris said. I'll never buy the bargain Remington .22 ammo again.

The Remington target .22 ammo and subsonic ammo is reliable. The cheap stuff is not.

The Remington target .22 ammo and subsonic ammo is reliable.

I agree. I really like the target stuff.....especially when I can find it for around $4.00 a box of 100.

I find the Golden Bullet stuff in boxes of 550 at Wal-Mart and other fine stores to be very reliable. I don't think I've averaged so much as a misfire per box, with a 10/22, 22/45 or a H&R revolver.

$10 or so per box. Much better than Thunderbolt.

It's not Eley, but it's great plinking ammo.

Or maybe I've gotten lucky with every box I've had. But I've shot a lot of 'em.

PMC Sidewinder has also treated me well, but my 10/22 isn't really fond of unplated lead ammo.

PMC Scoremaster is pretty good, too, but more expensive. It's a subsonic "near target quality" ammo for practice.

PMC is a tad dirty, but shoots fine. Reasonably priced.

If I want to pay much more than a few cents per round, I can shoot something other than a .22, so I only buy the good CCI stuff when there's a reason.

Yup I have this problem too. But I realise I bought it because it's cheap, so it doesn't upset me too much, and the missfires help me to identify and cure my 'flinch'

Made the mistake of using remington to sight in my savage MKII . Had fliers galore , and plenty of duds. left the range and picked up some aguila and sighted in again . Now that thing is spot on . Will never buy remington again , not reliable and hate to get a dud when I got a squrrel in the ol crosshairs.

CCI seems to be the king of .22LR ammo, at least when it comes to my rimfires. Federal Champion is very good or as good, and quite a bit cheaper.

Remington Golden Bullets are nice for plinking, but I get about 5 FTFs in a box of 550, usually solved by just rotating and re-firing. Federal "value" is also superb for plinking, but doesn't always have enough oompfh to throw the empty far enough out of my 10/22's action, resulting in a stovepipe/pinched empty.

Winchester Super-X is total crap, and not just because the bullets aren't plated. Haven't tried Thunderbolts, but I'm now very leery of super-cheapo .22LR.

I've had horrible leading problems with Remington Thunderbolt, I liked it at first because it seemed to function in all my pistols, cheap and universal ammo I thought, but when I got about 200 rounds thru the gun all accuracy was gone! After cleaning out the lead accuracy returned for about another 200 rounds. I quit buying Thunderbolt. The bulk Pak Golden Bullet has worked well for me but it seems to have the highest "dud" frequency of all the cheap ammo. Some paks are fine, others have 10-20 duds most are in between.

Federal Champion is my prefered cheap ammo, but its a bit underpowered for some pistols which causes ejection problems.

SAME THING happened to me last week at the range. I didnt have 1 problem with winchester ammo though.

I am not sure why, but Thunderbolt seems to be the dregs of .22 rimfire ammo. I bought some because it was cheap, and after shooting part of one box decided not to waste my time with it.

I also experienced duds that would not go off even when rotated and fired multiple times.

Thunderbolt

I quit buying it long ago as it was cheap but unreliable. There were usually a couple duds in each box of 50 - and I was firing it in clean, good quality firearms like S&Ws and Colts, not some suspect thing that may not have been striking the rims correctly.

If I find Super X I buy that, although it's probably double the price of Thunderbolt, because it seems to work well.

if you go over to rimfirecentral.com, it it a commonly known fact, that if you want bulk ammo that works every time, and is fairly consistent in performance, stay away from remmy bulk, or a lot of their stuff for that matter. cci blazer, works but stinky, and feddies, and winnies are better to go with.

Rem. .22 ammo is also incredibly dirty. Fouls up my guns faster than any other brand. One of the reasons I'd have so many misfires is because the stuff would crud up the action and bind the firing pin up in my MKII.

Remington Thunderbolt is by far the worst .22 ammo on the market. Half the cartriges in the box are filled with ground beef, or at least the behave like they are. Worst, most innacurate crap out there. I tried Remington Target .22's today out of a normally exceptionally accurate Browning lever action and they had to be the weakest, slowest .22's I'e ever fired. They printed way high, but I guess if you're in a longer distance shoot that would be fine. You could hear the firing pin fall and a pause before the bullet eventually impacted the plywood 25 yards away.
Most accurate I've fired is Federal Game-Shok, 40 and 38 grain. Federal Champion 40 grain is also good.

I have had very few problems with Remington Thunderbolts.
Back when I shot Bullseye I used to use it in the .22 matches.
One match several shooters using Remington target .22 ammo had a lot of misfires. I had none with Thunderbolt. I haven't noticed a lot of leading problems either. I've used it in a Ruger Mark II, 10/22, Winchester 52, Remington 541T HB, Smith M18, Beretta 21A, and Colt New Frontier .22.

I have had reasonably good accuracy out of my .22s with Thunderbolt too.
I don't use it for Benchrest .22 rifle matches, of course. For that I use Wolf Match target, or Aquila Target Rifle ammo.

For a lot of other stuff Thunderbolt works well for me.

Thunderbolts don't work well in my 10/22. When you can get them to fire they foul it badly and cycle slowly. It's unuseable until I take it apart for a detailed cleaning. They are such a mess in my revolvers that I'd rather not go shooting than have to use them.

Federal bulk box at wally world is decent but I prefer the Winchester Xpert .22 at a slightly higher price (and for 50 rounds less), they are cleaner shooting in my guns.

Remington Wal Mart bulk pack feeds flawlessly in my Colt Woodsman and routinely turns in 10-shot groups of 1 3/4" at 25 yards with a modified Weaver hold. I
Winchester bulk pack would do that in this pistol because it shoots so well in my M82 Kimber, but the wide mouth hollowpoint seems to not want to feed in the Colt.

I have had problems with Rem rimfire ammo and I used it in 357 mag but when reloading it it seemed bigger/thicker than Win or Fed and got scratched in the dies and was hard to use. It would not take a DEWC without a bulging ring. I had decided not to use Rem ammo anymore.

Remington 22s jam and misfire in Buckmark, Mark II Neos and Woodsman

I have had issues with the bulk Remington rimfire and avoid them completely. I had problems with them in two Mark IIs, Buckmark, Neos and Woodsman. They would jam and fail to fire. That might not be a bad thing in my Buckmark as it sometimes discharges when the safety is disengaged. If I'd keep a Remington round in the chamber when taking off the safety, I'd only have half a chance at shooting myself in the foot.

I have no problems with CCI Minimags or the bulk cartons of Federals which are less than 10 bucks for 550 rounds at Wallyworld.

I've never shot the thunderbolts. I get maybe 1 misfire in 100 with golden bullet value packs. Federal is allot better, maybe 1 in 350 rounds. I've never had a misfire with Winchester, although I haven’t really shot enough of it for a fair evaluation. I've had good luck with Remington target loads, both with accuracy and reliability.

In terms of value, reliability and accuracy, federal and Winchester work best for me.
