Here is a news story for everyone who is thinking about getting a gun for their wife's protection. The wife doesn't necessarily have to be interested in guns or even highly proficient but teaching your wife to shoot can save her life if bad things where to happen.

It also may be a good example to women of why they should at least learn to shoot regardless of their interest in it.

that's pretty intense....

She waited until the very last, after he assaulted her and she dropped the phone...

And it was still several minutes b4 police arrived.

I think she would have been in deep kimchee if she didn't plug him.

I almost feel like this should be evaluated and discussed over in S&T.

She waited until he was in the bathroom and beating her, to pull the trigger. That says a lot:

1) The moment he busted open the door and she saw him/his silhouette, I wonder if she should have been firing into him.
2) It says he likely did not see her with the gun. I mean, who approaches a woman with a gun in her hands and starts beating her. Had he seen the gun, i wonder if he would have kept moving forward on her and attacked.

Either way, it shows us that you can never count on the bad guy seeing the gun and being deterred. It's also a great way for us to analyze exactly at what point the shot becomes righteous/appropriate/necessary. I'm sure we each have our own line and it'll be interesting to see some discussion on where we all feel would have been the perfect point for her to start pulling the trigger.

Edit to add:
Also opens up discussion about what to do in the moments after a shooting before the police arrive.

Good for her!

But I feel strongly that she needs some training, that encounter could have gone terribly bad considering the perpetrator was given the opportunity to beat on her, and then she dropped the gun, could have gone terribly bad for her.

My wife carries, but she prefers an AL cause they are inherently smaller, lighter, and easier to conceal. I OTOH prefer a revolver, always have. And although any firearm is better than nothing, an AL can fail to feed in the heat of a struggle or a panic, such as what this woman experienced, this is due to limp wrist effect, and other elements that can interfere with cycling. Where as a good ol wheel gun will go bang no matter what position it is in, and regardless of how well supported it is their hand.

I was rather surprised that the dispatcher asked her to put the gun down before LE was in control. There is no way I would disarm myself before I'm certain LE has control of the situation, no way, and I noticed she refused to put the gun down until things were under LE control too, good call on her part.

I love dispatchers. "We're coming...we'll be there any minute...just heard from Iron Man and the Hulk and they're on their way, too. What's that? Superman, too, you say? With his super speed, why can't...oh, he's coming from Neptune...okay, ma'am...we've got twenty police cruisers, dogs, two platoons of Marines and three superheroes and...excuse me, Sergeant Henson? You say you just got there? How's the caller? Really? Too bad, and you got him just as he was leaving? Well, are you sure there's no pulse? Ouch...a tire iron shoved where? Oh my googness! Well, don't hold yourself responsible. These things happen. Okay, I've recalled the Marines and I'll recall Iron Man, the Hulk and, oh...Superman just arrived? Alright, and, Sergeant, don't rough the suspect up too much...he has constitutional rights, you know."

Remember that guy, Martin, in the U.K.? He shot a couple of intruders who had broken in to his place before, and one had a tire iron. He shot them with an illegal shotgun and went to prison for it.

Oh, and as for the woman, I love her. Talks like a terrified old lady until she shoots the guy, then she turns into Dirty Harry. "Move again and I'll blow your arse off!" Only in America!

MS....

I didn't read all the posts yet but it reminds me of a incident(true) my cousin told me about in rural MS.
An older gent saw a unknown trespasser enter his tool shed in his backyard. He quickly contacted 911. The county dispatcher informed the home owner the LE deputies were busy but they'd get there; "as soon as they could".
The old man said; "okay".
About a minute later, the home owner called 911 again saying; "Just so you know I just fired my 12ga double barrel at the guy."
Within 10min there was 6 patrol cars, 03 K9 units, 2 police helicopters & a EMT crew on the property.

A ticked off cop asked the home owner; I thought you said you fired a shot-gun? The sly old timer then said; "And I thought you said you'd be here as soon as you can."
