Later this month I have to do some mostly solo long-distance driving.

In addition to my trusty pocket revolver, I've decided to pack a semiautomatic pistol in my bag. I guess in case I break down in the middle of nowhere.

The semiauto pistols I shoot the best are the full-sized metal ones, but I really don't want the pistol to weigh as much as everything else in the bag.

My pocket 9mm's and 380's and 32's and so forth are easier to carry along, but there's no reason to go super small, either.

In the end I chose the polymer CZ75 compact clone instead of my previous road pistol, the Glock 26. The SAR (clone) is a little longer in the barrel and grip, which doesn't matter, and it weighs about the same. It fits my hands better. I recall that I can shoot it about as well as my full-sized pistols.

I'll take it to the range this week and shoot it back to back with a full-sized pistol. If it does as well as I recall, it will go on the trip with me.

It has a nice OWB holster with extra mag pouch, if I wanted to carry it under a coat. Seems doubtful, but you never know.

Feel free to tell me that I should bring a _____ instead. I probably have something similar.

What do you take with you on your road trips?

A long gun seems a little unwieldy, so a high-capacity pistol is as far as I'm willing to go.

The SAR has a 13-round mag, nice trigger, nice sights. I bought it NiB a few years ago.

This time of year - I change over to an S&W M69 snub in a Galco shoulder holster. I load it with 240 grain .44mag American Eagle. That load chronos at 1050 fps out of the short barrel.

Tanfoglio and other manufacturers have sold and continue to sell tons of these pistols. The frame used by all these manufacturers is always very similar, I would say the same if you look at the previous generation frames and this makes me think that the frame manufacturer is always the same and supplies the frame to those who request it with minimal differences as regards logos and lettering. In any case they are quite good, robust and reliable pistols.

I've owned two of these SAR's. The first one was traded towards something shiny. The second time I paid a little extra for the stainless slide. They've both gone bang every time, NP. The CZ75 shape works well for my hands.

My year around EDC is a S&W Shield 9X19mm. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) works for me. Others see it differently each to their own applies.

My one EDC locally and traveling is a Ruger Security 9 Compact with a 15 round magazine plus two more on the belt or in a pocket. That’s 45+1. It’s a reliable, accurate, affordable pistol. I know it inside out and backwards. I have no need or desire to carry any other handgun. I carry for self-defense, and I believe that proficiency with the EDC is a critical factor for survival. I do not have limitations depending upon what gun I carry. I am an expert with one gun, and it goes with me everywhere.

What do you take with you on your road trips?
A 642 in the front pocket and an M&P 40 in a cabled lock box in the trunk in the event of something weird happening while broken down on the side of a dark rural road.

I just let my carry gun tag along. These days it's a Beretta 84F, 380.

I've got a Sarsilmaz 2000 in 9mm. A stainless steel CZ-75B clone, with 17 round mags? Great gun. Never malfunctions, and I shoot it pretty well for me. Fits my hand like it was made for me. If it wasn't as heavy as a hunk of railroad track, I'd seriously consider carrying it. But boy, I love to shoot it.

I guess I'm another "revolver guy" who went to the dark side.

I usually go with my 1911 in a shoulder holster if I'm going to be in a vehicle for a long time.Much more comfortable than something on my hip.If I need something smaller for when I get there I take one of my P365's.

My road trips are usually from here in Florida to Appalachia (W-NC or E-TN.) I bring several, usually due to indecision. My regular carry gun, usually a Kel-Tec PF9, rides on my hip. At least one .22LR, usually my 63-3, comes along in case I find some plinking opportunities. A pocket gun for BU duty, usually a P32, is included. If I expect to do some hiking on the trail, I bring something for that, either a Police Service Six in .357, or a 1911 (so I can participate in the obligatory "bear-gun thread" when it comes up.)

A Winchester 94 has also been riding along the last few such trips. Before I got that, it was an old 20 gauge single.

Unless my road trip is for hunting (requiring specific guns) I carry a shield 9 daily, and each of my trucks has a Glock 19 in a lock box, 2 spare mags and a kydex holster are also available. Each truck also has a H&R partner protector. Mrs. Fl-NC carries a LCP, the trunk of her car has a Glock 26 and a spare magazine and kydex holster. If we are going somewhere out of town together, guns are cross-loaded accordingly into the vehicle we are using.
