Moyock North Carolina but i go to VA a lot also.
Just about 20 minutes ago my holster ruger P95 went off when i went to stand up. My hands were clear of the gun and as far as i know the safety was on but may have been off. What happened?

Ruger is definatly getting a call about that and i'd like to know what happened.

Wait, your P95 fired while in the holster? Wow. I'm glad you're okay, and I believe you when you say that's the scariest moment of your life.

What brand of holster? Was/is there debris in the holster where it could've caught the trigger?

Hard to say without more detail...

What kind of holster?
Where do you carry the holster?
Does holster cover the trigger area?
Is holster in good repair?
Was the weapon fully seated into the holster?

Stood up from what? (ie. office chair, the couch, a bench at a resturant)
Did you bump against anything when you stood up?

Is your good in good mechanical working order?
When is the last time you cleaned it or taken it down?
Has your weapon had any other issues latley? (i.e. lots of FTE, FTF or behaving out of the ordinary).

Without any of that info it's hard to say what happened.

I second the question as to where the bullet went.

Glad your'e ok, as long as noone is hurt you should be fine. I would definitely figure out what caused it so it doesnt happen again though!

I've had only one handgun truly malfunction. It fired when the safty was released. Sear/hammer ingagement too fine. Would also go full-auto when it was dirty. Replacing the sear and hammer cured problem.

All other NDs were caused by the trigger being pulled, and never on purpose. If your holster covers the trigger and if it has a retaining strap, a knife should solve the problem. Goodbye strap.

In a fobus RU-97...

Like this?

Doesn't look like it covers the trigger completely. Methinks new leather (or if you still prefer, Kydex) is in order.

Yeah an unexpected discharge is about the most terrifying thing in the world, glad no one was hurt, hopefully the problem can be resolved quickly.

I'm still trying to figure this out. I could see something snagging and pulling the trigger if you were sitting down, but standing up the force would be applied the wrong way. All I can think is that it must be that the hammer hit the chair arm while you were getting up. If you were in Condition One then your sear failed and if you're in Condition Two then perhaps you have really, really soft primers in your ammo. Other than that, I have no idea.

thanks for sharing this and keep us updated if you figure out exactly ho it happened. it helps all the rest of us stay careful and safe

There may be a possibility that the gun rode up when OP sat down (butt lifted by seat arm? --- the hammer might get moved back by a similar action), then slides back into place upon rising.

With the hammer was back & safety off, the slide back into position - with the bump in the trigger guard area that Fobus uses for retention - might be enough ...

Wow! That is scary. :what: Right about now, I'm feeling truly grateful that my P-01 is a decocker and designed to be carried in Condition 2. :scrutiny:

Firstly, I am glad nobody got shot. I noticed this was a scared myself thread, not a I just shot myself thread (which wouldn't have been posted most likely).

Second, I have never taken a safety course but I was raised with the following rules. They should be familiar.

1. Weapons are loaded until you have personally cleared them, always treat them as if they are loaded.
2. Always keep the muzzle in a safe direction, don't point it at something you wouldn't shoot.
3. Finger off the trigger until you plan to shoot.
4. Safeties aren't. All safeties can fail (I still don't see how on a hammer block, but I still count this as true).

How do those compare to the NRA safety rules? I hope you find out what happened and that you compensate / correct the condition that caused it.

Alan

I'm looking at my P95DC right now...

Hammer's down.

It's not for trade.

I may be a little weird, but I NEVER trust a mechanical safety. I'd rather just live with that long creep DA trigger pull for the first shot.

I -hate- decocking it.

Could this have been some kind of amazing ammo malfunction? What brand of ammunition was involved?

The easiest way to check this would be to see if there is a dimple on the shell from the firing pin.

Have you tried recreating it? Clear the weapon; double check. Put it in the holster and try jostling it around in the different states of readiness. Watch/listen for the hammer falling or any unusual noises. I'm sure Ruger will be interested in knowing about this too. Glad no one got hurt.
