Sexist gun dealers

Which local (close to Kennesaw) shop?
Actually, it's in Woodstock. Pannell's on Canton Hwy. Go toward Roswell (away from Acworth) on Hwy 92, and hang a left. They're about 300 feet up on the left, next to a cheerleading-supply store. Good bunch, very casual. The range is well-regulated and safe, though it can get a bit hot in there in the summer months.

Hot Shots in Austell is also pretty good. They've got the best range I've seen in awhile. Extremely clean and well-lit. What's more, the patrons actually clean up after themselves, something you certainly won't find at a lot of places.

Last December Galyan's had a 10% off coupon (good for all purchases), if they have one this year, you and your friends can hit em where it hurts (in the pocket book).

I have to give credit...

to a shop in Buffalo, NY. Buffalo Gun Center. They not only know their stuff and have a great selection, but they also treat my wife, Greta, like a female gunbuyer should be treated. For the most part, when she asks for help, she's had one or even two guys at the counter to help her out and answer her questions. I usually just wander around just inside earshot and let her do the talking to the salesmen. The fact that they treat her like a person and not like a gun-nut's wife has now (in addition to the guns I've bought from them) made them the sale of a beautiful Kimber Ultra CDP, which is now her everyday carry gun, and she just put a Taurus Model 94 .22 on layaway because she wanted a plinker.

Hats off to you guys.

God help those clowns...!...

Boy, some of those ignorant gun shop owners would NOT--repeat, NOT--want a visit from the SiG Lady if they treated me with disdain!!
:cuss:

Fortunately, I'm treated with the respect I deserve at our local gunshops because 1.) I have money to spend occasionally and they know it, and 2.) they know where I shoot and how often. They would be utter freaking idiots to ignore customers like me.

Why should ANY gun dealer cut himself off from very real dollars and very real postive references (word-of-mouth, usually) by exercising a completely sexist attitude before a female customer??!! No, they would NOT want a visit from the SiG Lady. Ever.

Sexist gun dealers aren't helping much. Its tough enough getting women involved in shooting sports without them having to deal with a neanderthal when they finally buy a gun.

OTOH, there is a GM near me that used to have a female gunsmith/dealer working the gun counter. If I had some technical questions about a gun I was looking to buy, most of the gun counter guys would look at me slackjawed and confused. After awhile I would specifically only by a gun or have work done on my guns when this lady was around and was available to help- she knew her stuff, and wasn't too hard on the eyes either.

I went to a gunshop near Richmond. Guy behind the counter wouldn't look at me or speak to me, because I look about 15 years younger than I am. Probably thought I was a high school kid. Almost had to pull my own gun out just to get attention (Just kidding).

Went back, took my wife. She wants to look at CZs. Guy behind the counter pulls out 4 different Ladysmiths, tells her to look at them instead.

Needless to say, they didn't get any of our money :cuss:

Just to have fun with a store like that . . .

Take $2,000 out of your bank account. Get it in crisp $100 bills. At the store, ask for the manager. When he arrives, spread the two grand on the counter.

Tell him that you came to the store to spend this much, and more, but that you were treated so badly, that you are taking your cash elsewhere. Then, pick up the money and walk out.

Or, just fax 'em a copy of the receipts for guns and ammo bought elsewhere.

I have never had the problem of a sexist dealer so far. I have bought enough from my local dealer that when i walk in he calls me by name. there for about 3 weeks i was buying something everyday. between my husband and myself we have bought enough that we have even got free t-shirts lol. my husband and i have to switch out whose turn it is for a new gun. this time it is mine and its on layaway. about every 2-3 months we are buying a new one.

Sig Lady vs Sexist gun shop owners

Sig lady,

If your the same Sig Lady from benos, then my money is on you. :)

Small world...

One and the same. ;) Thank you for your support...!

My local gun dealers have been quite nice to me all along. No complaints about three certain gun shops in Eugene.

Some people...

I swear I can't imagine what those guys in that shop use for brains. I can tell you that the range I worked at used to have a "Ladies Day" where any woman could come in and shoot at a discounted rate. They also got discounts on any ammunition they needed. We offered free instruction and always made sure we had plenty of RO's scheduled for that day.

At our range we didnt discrmate against anyone. Male, female, white, black, or polka dotted...didnt matter. Our focus was to make a sale. Money is money and it all spends the same. If in the process we could make the shooting sports more accessible to more people....all the better.
Those "boys club" ranges and shops need to go the way of the dodo. All they have done is turn young people away from the sport because of their snobbery. If the old white haired crew doesnt start welcoming people to their sport it will die with them.

Did you also have a "Men's Day" with the same discounts, free instruction, etc.?

Striking an Important Balance...

Until there are thousands more women involved in sport and defense shooting activities, then we'll need to do whatever it takes for a while longer to make shooting attractive, visible and affordable to the ladies. Even if it means a few "Ladies' Days" at the range. The very life of the industry is at stake.

If we expect the ranges to stay open we need to financially support them and they need to reciprocate by supporting us--the ladies, that is. The guys have long had the sport well in hand... and that's fine. Many of the guys have been sensible and thoughtful enough to introduce us to the sport, be our de facto coaches, and shoot alongside us for fun. The doors of the range and the sport just need to be open at all times to women both for the financial support they can provide as well as for their own ultimate well-being (defense instruction) and enjoyment (sport shooting matches).

Did I mention that my dealer's wife hosts Ladies Night at their shop? I'm a guy but I think it's a good idea. I like to hang around there and talk with pretty much anybody that comes in, and that includes women, but that Ladies Night gives them a time to look/debreif/buy without the guys around telling them what they need or don't need. They as individuals know what they need a gun to do, and while they as individuals can use realtime info, they don't need some annoying old coot (who could also be as young as 5 years) opining that all a woman needs is a Ladysmith or .25auto. Hey, they do it with Women On Target.

Oh, not dealer-oriented, but my sister went out shooting with her now-exboyfriend one time while they were seeing each other. His wondernine and her 2" Taurus .38spl. He liked to rip off two 15rd mags fast as he could, but he couldn't hit much of anything. My sister, with that little .38, could/can and did hit gallon milk jugs at 50' and make a fist sized group at 7yds. Then, they're back at his house cleaning the guns when his father came in, took one look at my sister's gun and said "...some more muzzle flip..." and ex- says "...didn't bother her none..." From the way she related that story to me, he sounded put out. They didn't date for long after that either. So it seems it's not just dealers having problems with this issue.

Sig Lady,

The thrust of my point is with the first quote stating that they didn't discriminate against anyone . If they in fact do not offer the same deals to men then they are being discriminatory and the statement is flat wrong.

That being said, I agree that we should do everything possible to bring more women into the fold. In this particular case, I'm even willing to be discriminated against because in the long run I hope to benefit by a larger population of shooters. Should do the same for kids for the same reason. More shooters = more better.

It's a lousy situation...in that women are making up a larger and larger segment of the gun owning population.
NRA sort of gets it, GOAL has sort of got it, industry trade mags normally dedicate a month out of the year to women and guns in their issues,

Have you gone ot one of the Becoming an Outdoors woman seminars sponsored by GOAL, the NRA, and local clubs in MA?

I just remembered, when I took the GA hunter ed course there were a good many girls and a couple of married women in the class. One that stood out was a ten year old girl and her brother. All her brother wanted to do was get it over with and go hunting and he was so busy whining about it, he didn't listen so well and the girl outscored him.

One small step for womankind...

Now, if we can just convince The Blue Press to dedicate a mere one magazine cover per year to sexy MALE models, I'll rest my 'equality' case.

:D

In reality and in many of the classes I teach, women tend to be better students.
I think there is a hang up with a lot of guys when it comes to "learning" about guns.

Woemn gnerally have no ego and seem to be happy to learn.

Granted this is a generalization but I have emperical evidence that suggests that women tend to test out better in classes.

sexiest gun dealers...

First of all, I'm a man who thinks that a woman with a gun is damn near the sexiest thing I've ever seen:evil:
Where can I get a Brittany Spears Fembot??? GRRRRRrrrrrr!

OOOOHHHHH! "sexist" Rrriiiiiight....:D

I once worked as a trapper for a hotel/skeet course/ game preserve.
The Hermitage, near Mt.Snow, Vt.
Among my duties of taking care of several shotguns, the entire sporting clays course, and launching clays, came the firearms instruction for 10 wedding party guests one fine day... Several of them women.

As I've stated before, ANYONE interested in guns is someone worth spending time chatting to... I always enjoy a good gun inspired conversation sprinkled with witty humor.

Anyway, Myself and my co-worker split the entire party of 20 into 2 groups of 10 and I took those who had either never fired a gun, or who had very little experience... This one woman who had never fired a gun, and whose sole prior experiences with them were through plastic evidence bags, as she was a prosecutor somewhere in NYC. broke 28 out of 100 clays with an over-under 20 guage on a course that is a 77 avg. and has been used by the Budweiser/Duck's unlimited, and by Ken- The guy that writes/used to write articles on clays and bird hunting for Field and stream I forget his last name, it was some 10 years and 6 kids ago...
She would get so excited whenever she broke one that she'd cry!
When she missed, I'd see her get more aggresive, and more determined.
God, it was one of my favorite times with a firearm, a clear day, and gobs of ammo in a target rich environment...
The other girls were genuinely happy for her while some of the men felt let down that they didn't hit as many clays as she did...
I told all of them that the shooting sports is something that like any other sport has it's superstars and the not-quite-so-superstars.
Some people have uncanny accuracy, and some just spray lead.
The thing that makes it great is that anybody, any age, of any culture, even those with severe handicaps, can enjoy shooting.
It doesn't matter if you're good at it, just keep practicing and you WILL get better!
I also worked at an auto parts store... Another bastion of positive female oriented customer service and interaction... hahaha

Many is the time I'd have a female customer thank me for helping her out without being "just a guy who thinks I'm a stupid girl" as one lady put it.
Many was the time when a customer would refuse to ask one of my female co-workers a question and would wait for 10 minutes to talk to me, only to have me ask the girl where the part was/availability from our vendor/ recommend a good car wax... That used to really get them... :D

I've seen women turned away from certain types of handgun sales.
I've been discriminated against by the "I-know-everything" and "what do you need a gun like that for?" and "How can I (NOT!) help you" types.
I had the money in my pocket to buy what I wanted, but I wouldn't buy what they wanted to sell me, nor do I ever go back to them.

I live in Vermont, where I can go to my local gun shop and fondle everything from a .22 that folds up like a pocketknife, to a Barret light .50 with nothing more than a polite; "May I?"
I often fondle the Barret, at 35 pounds and $2500, it's my "Excalibur"
Sometimes I talk to Larry, Sometimes I talk to Karen...
It depends solely upon which one happens to be standing behind the counter and I enjoy doing business with both of them just the same as they both enjoy doing business with me and my wife.

Customer service can be had anywhere, it's customer satisfaction that will keep them coming back to your store...

That's the way it should be...

Errr..

Car Knocker

Well I guess you are right. I guess we DID discriminate after all.

Congradulations! Ya got me!

I guess we discriminated against men. What I should have said is that we gave good customer service to everyone who entered our shop. However, we showed favoritism toward women by giving them discounts.

It just goes to show, even when you try to do right, you do wrong. Oh and thanks Car Knocker for being so gracious and self sacrificing by not challenging this practice.

In the future I will be even more dilligent when posting. I will not make that mistake again.
