Should I be concerned?

Come on!

If you just want to maim them some
No.4 shot and aim low.

I have noticed a lot of this kind of thing lately as well as vulgarity.

Please go to myspace or yahoo chat or craigslist forums if you find it impossible to take the high road!

What you describe

Raises red flags in my book, get a cheap pair of binoculars for the next time and keep writing implements handy.....as well as your sidearm.

Trust your gut instincts!

Thanks a lot for the warning Ken. I am very glad that I got to ask my question and thank all you mods for keeping everything here clean.

Well without a picture of the scene everything we say is purely speculation as are your thoughts .

Could this person have been trying to read the house number , perhaps they were lost and looking for a particular home ? Guys aren't big into asking strangers for directions .

Do you have a wife or girlfriend who could have been changing their clothes and walked in front of a window that was uncovered ? People often do things like this without thinking especially in a somewhat remote setting .

The guy could have been doing anything by staring in your direction .

Were you close enough that you are 100% sure he was staring at you and not something behind you .

Heightening your security precautions for a few weeks is the best course of action to be safe .

Another option is that they were looking for a drug-house to make a buy. If they were sent by a friend with only vague directions, or had only been there at night before, they would certainly be looking you and your house over to see if anything looked familiar. If that were the case, they most likely would not want to stop and ask directions.

Rob, you think??? I call the sheriff (no PD in my town) and say that a truck rode by 3 times in 2 days? What would they do?
Well, they can't do much without a crime having been committed, but if a sheriff can get out there before the truck leaves, they can stop it because of the phone call saying there's a suspicious vehicle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the road you live on does not lead anywhere, does it? If you live on a road that's more or less a giant loop, and you see the same suspicious vehicle on it more than once with the same suspicious moron in it, call the police immediately. That doesn't add up. It's not like they got lost in a maze of streets. It's a loop.

My mom has had to call the police on a couple of suspicious vehicles, one of which did something similar to what happened to you. I don't know what came of it, but there's nothing wrong with reporting a suspicious vehicle.

How will you feel if those punks end up doing something to your neighbors or yourself and you never called anyone that could have prevented it?

Bah. No reason to live like a prisoner in your own home. If I'm outside my house on my property and someone is staring, I'd just stare right back. If you feel threatened call the police and describe the truck and its occupants...get the license number if you see them again. If they decide to hop out of the truck then go inside and call the police.

There is no reason to panic and run and hide just because some doofus kids are out joyriding. That being said make your security preparations as best you can and live free. I refuse to cower in the night holding my gun for warmth because some punk was eyeballing me.

get some geese, yes geese. the best early warnin/alarm system goin ! a coupla trip lights too. even the dumbest of muggers will know you've seen em and pick a weaker, unaware victim. oh, a nice " f*** gettin bit by that " barkin dog works wonders but please, please get the right dog and correct trainin for ya situation. all the best.

That happened to me once!

I was looking for an address in NorCal as the sun was going down to deliver some important legal documents (it was a two hour trip on my FZR 600 mostly going 80mph)

I finally make it near the place but it was getting dark and I couldn't see the house numbers, I went to ring the bell when in full view of an open window walks a really good looking naked gal of about 19 or 20!

After I picked up my jaw from the floor I got the heck out of dodge b4 dad came out to shoot the peeping tom! ( wasn't peeping but I could understand everyone thinking I was)

I don't think they ever realized I was there...even though the dogs were barking like crazy.

While that would certainly make someone stop at night when she would be visible, this was during the day and she wasn't home.
Were you close enough that you are 100% sure he was staring at you and not something behind you .
The only thing behind me were some trees so yeah, he was staring at me. I know this because of the different angles between him and I as they passed then turned.

Love my country, you could be right. I could probably come up with something that explains the really short second trip that would fit along those lines. I don't see how they would think my house might be it since I live quite a distance from any possible dealers. Like I said both of my next door neighbors are rarely there ....the other one is 84... lady behind me is 60+ (and not the dealing type). It would be at least a quarter mile to a possible dealer and it would be on another street. Still can't quite rule it out though. People looking for drugs may be very easily confused. Heck, they could have been in the wrong town, you never know.

Rob, no chance of a sheriff when they are about 30 minutes from here. The road they went around the second time goes nowhere but the road in front of my house makes a different loop that ends at the interstate on both ends.
I refuse to cower in the night holding my gun for warmth because some punk was eyeballing me.
Me too.

If they drive by again, you might try keeping a digital camera on you and taking a picture of the guy when he is staring at you. This might give one of two reactions: 1. They were casing your house but won't rob it now because they know you have a picture of them. 2. They are just looking for a fight and the picture will set them off - best to have your CCW handy.

Lots of good advice (and some not so good) on what to do if you don't see them again.

Thanks sec6. That's a good idea but I'd have to be next to the road for them to notice the camera probably. I'll keep my cell on me in case I need some sort of camera. I don't want to get a fight started that I can avoid but I won't let anyone make me afraid in my own home either. I didn't see them at all yesterday and I spent a total of about 2 hours outside working and walking. We'll see what today brings.

The neighbor just up the street said that he hadn't noticed the truck and he mows grass for some of the neighbors so he'd be one of the first to see them. I gave him my new house number and told him to please call if he sees them. He said that he would and thanked me for looking out for the neighborhood.

I'm starting to think that all is well but I'm going to keep my guard way up for a couple of weeks anyway. If it was the old ex-friend he would have pulled up in the driveway drunk about midnight yelling for me to come outside by now. That is unless he's not 100% sure that I live there yet (I never said he was dumb). I'm thinking about hiding the guns for a few days since I don't have a safe. I told the neighbor that I mentioned earlier that I would be having one person at the house this week to do work and gave him a basic description of the truck and man. I told him no one else was to be around the house and to feel free to go and ask questions anytime he sees someone other then me or my family at the house. He said he would. That makes me feel a lot better.

I like the camera idea myself...it also gets the license plate. Um...this does not seem a very good amateur, let alone professional, way to case or target a house. I mean, why bring all that attention to themselves? I remember when I was house hunting in my present neighborhood...hmm, people might have thought my actions were pretty strange.

Remember Col. Cooper

Just a couple of quick thoughts:

Col. Cooper emphasized that the most powerful weapon you have is mindset. In Principles of Personal Defense, in writing of awareness, he emphasized noticing anything that seems unusual or out of place. Your situation certainly seems to qualify.

It also seems to me that something "felt" wrong to you, right? This brings to mind Gavin de Becker's The Gift of Fear, and the importance of attending to these clues and instincts.

Stay Vigilant

Col. Jeff Cooper died a few months ago.

He was very big in gun circles started some shooting range in Arizona (brain freeze very famous range) also wrote a column for Guns and Ammo (I think thats the magazine) and some books.

Championed the "scout rifle" concept and loved 1911's.

This is a very short description of Col. Cooper.

Sorry if what I posted was taken the wrong way. I meant it in a "Castle Doctrine" mode of mind.
Not of the itchy trigger finger.
Sometimes after a long day I may come across as rather surly.

Thanks for reminding where I am.

I'm usually packing when I mow the lawn. Fiance thinks I'm nuts

Well, you might not have time to get to that big safe inside in case a threat suddenly presents itself. A .38 in the hand beats the AR-15 in the safe. Tell her that.

Thanks John :)
Thanks for the info vynx, I guess I gave away my newbness huh?
A .38 in the hand beats the AR-15 in the safe.
A 22LR in the hand beats ANYTHING in the safe if you need it right then. I can't think of any self defense scnarios when you have time to get into the safe aside from a really really slow break in.

just a thought- but perhaps they were real estate people looking for property to buy?

There was no sign on the truck right?

I'm into photography, so I carry around my camera everywhere (it's even in my lap while driving), just to shoot whatever I might want a picture of (mostly for the school paper). The only problem is it's very bulky, bigger than a gun. When I turn 21 I forsee a lot of problems carrying a big SLR and a gun...

Anyway, if I were you, I would carry around at least a point and shoot, so you could have taken as many pictures as possible.

It sounds to me like they were casing the neighborhood, but you never know. One thing you can do when working in the yard is keep a can of wasp killer nearby. It'll work wonders in someone's face from a safe distance.
