First, I have guns I shoot and guns I collect. I want to be kind of vague on the brands I am talking about here. I know people have strong opinions solely based on brand names alone, so I am intentionally being vague about brand name.
I collect a certain line of rifle. There is no real collector value in them like say a Parker shotgun, but I collect these rifles. I have several of them, most of which are safe queens - my choosing. I like these rifle, and just having them and shooting them here and there is enough for me. I have plenty of other guns to shoot and hunt with. This line of guns are no longer made, and haven’t for about 20 years. There is one I use in the fall for hunting season that is nice, but has some bluing wear and a few minor scratches. But I found an unfired with slightly different woodwork and this one is MINT and UNFIRED! Thing is I can’t quite swing the asking price at the moment, unless I sell another gun.
Which brings me to…
I could part with a certain 1911 I have. It’s a good shooter and has had some custom work done to it that I really like. Thing is I never shoot it, and I don’t collect 1911’s. I am thinking I can buy another 1911 like this anytime I want to. But the rifle, well, its the only unfired one I've really seen like this. While I really like this 1911, my only issue would be is one day my kids would maybe like to shoot/use/have it. Or I could use it for a bullseye match or something. My interest in pistols is for self defense, so I figure if I'd shoot IDPA or something like that I'd rather use my carry gun.
Here are my issues:
1) do I trade a gun I no longer shoot for a gun I probably won't shoot?
2) the gun I will trade for is very similiar to one gun I already have
3) I'd probably shoot my rifle more since I'd have a nice version in the safe
4) should I really worry about the "kids" issue? I have no idea if they will ever even be interested as they are pretty young yet. But, with 3 kids I'd think one maybe would?
What do you think? Any opinions or comments?
