I have a Sig P226 in 40 caliber. I am looking for a 9 mm. Somebody suggested I just buy a 9 mm barrel and magazine and convert my 40 caliber. Will this work?
The problem is that the extractor won't really be right. Some folks believe if can cause stress on the extractor, and of course reliability may not be 100%.
I think a caliber change kit (including a slide) is available for your gun but it is probably pretty expensive.
Bar Sto makes a 40/357 to 9mm conversion barrel for the 226 which is supposedly a simple drop in conversion.
I don't own nor have I tried a Bar Sto caliber conversion barrel, but I do have a 40/.357 to 9mm conversion barrel for my Glock 33 which drops in and is machined to work with the stock .40 extractor in the gun. You'd have to check with them but I have to believe they'd work with the standard .40 extractor.
It will only require a new barrel and maybe a different recoil spring. The existing mags will work just fine.
The 357 SIG is a hot cartridge that surpasses the 9 mm and 40 is knock down power. You can use the 40 barrel for practice and switch to the 357 for carry.
It is not a hard cartridge to reload for. The bottleneck does require a extra step when reloading and folks that bad mouth reloading it don't understand how to reload bottlenecks.
I don't know if my area is the exception to the rule but 40 brass is easy and cheap to come by. I regularly find it left on the range whereas 9mm is in high demand.
