Man's condition good after jar explosion

MEBANE - A 32-year-old Mebane man was in good condition Thursday at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a jar filled with some gunpowder blew up on him.

Mebane police and fire departments were called to 102 Merion Court, Mebane, at about 9:11 p.m. Wednesday initially in regard to a gunshot wound. When rescue personnel arrived, they discovered that Michael Stanlonis had not been shot with a gun, though he was injured.

"When we got there, we found a 32-year-old male sitting on the kitchen floor," said Mebane Fire Chief Bob Louis. "He had multiple lacerations and places where glass was embedded under his skin and he was bleeding."

Louis said that Stanlonis was allegedly trying to reload some gun shells, but he didn't have the proper equipment to do it. He had put some gunpowder in a glass jar and then lit a cigarette

"The gun powder ignited, which in turn exploded inside the glass jar and the shrapnel from the glass jar embedded in his skin," Louis said.

Stanlonis, who was at his parents' house at the time of the incident, was struck with glass in the face, neck, chest and arms. He was taken by helicopter to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill Wednesday night.

"They actually flew him out as a precautionary measure because we didn't know how deep the glass had penetrated," Louis said.

Police also are investigating the incident.

That on top of removing the powder from the original container to put it in a GLASS jar no less.

I'm thinking he was going for the Darwin award.

I have seen copper engravings of early musketeer's. You can see bandolier’s of ammo across their chests. http://www.bandoliers.co.uk/bando/bando.htm The vials are full of black powder.

The earliest arquebus musketeer used matchlocks. I have read that every so often, that in transferring the lighted match to the hand, that a musketeer would set off some of the vials.

Boom!

So whats wrong with doing that?

When I sometimes use dippers for my powder charge I pour the powder in a glass bowl to dip from then when I'm done I pour it back into its original container.

But really I thought it was my ash tray!

That's probably exactly what he did.

The dude was probably using a Lee loader, transfered some powder from the container to a glass jar (no static) and lit a cigarette. He probably did this all the time with no incident.

All it takes is once...

Unless he was using black powder, I don't buy it. Ever light a pile of old smokeless powder? It doesn't explode, it burns. Having it in a glass jar in my mind would make it less likely to "explode" since a jar has a wider mouth than some smokeless powder containers and thus would be less restricted. Smokeless needs to be contained in order for pressures to buld up to explosive levels. Black powder on the other hand...............KABOOM!!

In order to make an old roommate feel less freaked out by my storing SP in the house I took a very, very small pile of Universal (like maybe 1/4 teaspoon) and wearing welding gloves and a face shield I ground a lit cigarette out in it.

It didn't catch fire and my reloading empire has been growing ever sense.

Burning powder in a glass jar would probably shatter the glass from thermal shock. Can't expect a newswriter to miss the chance to play up an "explosion."
