Earlier this week a co-worker boyfriend told me about a friend of his that was selling a Uzi clone, a Tacticool Shotgun, and an AK, and give me the guys number. Apparently he trashed his vehicle and needed to raise cash fast.

I finally arrange to go meet the guy and it turns into the worst gun experience of my life, much worse than having a loaded gun pointed at you during a range trip. I go to his house and he has the AK layed out on his bed with a magazine in the gun. When I pick up the weapon I remove the mag and to my suprise find it loaded and then cycle the action and a round pops out... I froze in shock at this point and then continued to field strip the gun and check it out. It soon becomes apparent that this is a home build, the Big Ol' machine screws that stick out 3/8's of an inch and the extra hole he drilled give it away, so I ask about part count. He look at me and says "whats that?"

At this point I cut bait and ask what else he is selling. He reaches into his closet and grabs a Uzi clone and thankfully clears the chamber but then slaps homes a full mag and hands it to me saying "Don't worry nothings in the chamber..". I look at the gun for all of 2 seconds and say that I'm gonna pass and that it was nice to meet him and start to make for the door. He then whips out his tacticool shotty which is a mossberg 500A 28" Vent Rib barrel with porting with ATI forearm pistol grip and rear pistol grip and asks if I need a home defense gun. I just said bye and left.

What the hell was that guys problem, he doesn't know me from adam and is giving me loaded weapons....I drove home in sorta a dazed frame of mind about the whole thing.

Anyone else ever have this happen?

Not specifically like that, but I've run into more people then I care to count who really shouldn't own firearms....or cars...or have children. Hope you got all your fingerprints off that weapon, guy sounds like a loose screw.

Sure hope he knew to make it with the semi auto trigger grouping...

Geeez freakin' Louize!

Get over yourself. The guy sounds like he didn't even qualify as a mall ninja wantabee. So what? You know safe gun handling practices and behaved accordingly.

What is the point of your post. What did you intend to convey? That there are lots of folks out there with guns who don't know how to safely handle them?

Yep - there's lots and if you were so concerned why didn't you take the time to educate him which would have been a much more productive course of action than coming here and running down some poor schlub who probably didn't know better and has never had the benefit of proper training.

Yep. I've had comparable experiences.

I've been handed revolvers that resided in drawers for 50 years and popped out corroded rounds. I've done the same with Lugers, 1911s, and other guns as well. I've heard people say it's "really cool" when their pistol shoots multiple rounds at a time. I've been handed Grandpa's double barrel shotty that was shorter than my forearm. If you trade guns long enough, you will see this kind of thing in every segment of gun owners.

If the errant gun owner is receptive, I try to educate in a non-judgemental way. The goal is to bring them to compliance with standard safety practices and the law. If they are unreceptive, I simply remove myself from the danger they pose.

I spent about 15 minutes trying to explain US parts count to the guy on his AK but he just kept reiterating that, all he did was assemble his kit and that wasn't illegal.

it was my understanding that a US made parts counts was no longer required since the AWB expired. If I am mistaken please correct me.

US made parts count is still required on Parts Kit built gun. An AK typically requires 6 US parts.

That clown (the seller, not the member- I'm not insulting members here) probably rides the short bus and wears a football helmet so he won't exacerbate the previously existing head trauma when he falls down. Trying to educate him would be a waste of time and expose the member to to the danger of being in his company while attempting to do so. I got over handing guns and ammunition at the same time to people I don't know when a guy asked to go shooting with me then committed suicide with my gun. Needless to say that was the last time I went shooting with anybody I don't know real well. (Yes, the authorities were called and I got my gun back.) People who do exceptionally stupid things with guns (I suppose that could include me for letting him shoot my gun, but at least I learned from my mistake) make me too nervous to stick around to educate them.

I see this as similiar to an antigun attitude. Someone would think that with all these kinds of crazy people out there, having a mandatory class or instruction for legal posession would be justified. But the huge numbers of legal guns in the US as compared to the relatively low number of gun accidents, would seem to indicate, that such careless gun handling isn't the problem it is made out to be.

The bigger problem with the guy would be attempting to sell a homemade gun to someone else. You didn't mention whether the receiver was a registered part or not. Having a loaded gun is also a problem. The parts count and such, is less important, since there is deliberately much confusion over the actual rules, and they aren't often enforced anyway with respect to individual owners.

I would normally limit my "education" to the really big illegal matters, like selling a gun illegally or an illegal conversion of a legal firearm, and just politely say I'm not interested.

I might have actually met this guy. The ak sounds familiar. Maybe a bunch of people just make them sloppy from kits. If it was the same guy, you did good not to buy because it is the only ak I have ever seen jam and it jammed every other shot. Accuracy was surprisingly on par for an ak.

why do you think that sheriff was quoted as saying some people should'nt own guns:confused:.
not that stringent and demanding licenses and training stops idiots. I remember
a UK pistol shooter who decided the quickest way to his car was to cross in front of a range where the military were shooting. fortunatly for the idiot the only injury was a broken nose when the nco running the range caught up with him :neener:
