Man accidentally shot by sister

COUNCIL BLUFFS (AP) — Authorities say a Council Bluffs man was on life support in an Omaha hospital after he was shot by his sister with a gun he told her contained only blank ammunition.

Elizabeth Brannen told investigators Monday that she confronted her brother, Chad, about handling the weapon in the house, and he told her it was loaded only with blanks. She said he fired it in the living room to prove the point, and then handed it to her.

The sister told police she aimed the gun at her brother and fired a live round, which struck him in the forehead.

Elizabeth Brannen drove her brother to Jennie Edmundson Hospital, and he was later transferred to the Nebraska Medical Center.

Police charged her with reckless use of a firearm.

Doesn't sound like an accident to me.
Perhaps he wanted to commit suicide with the maximum guilt and misery to his sister.
Or maybe she slipped in a live round to get rid of him.

And when was the last time you had a box of blanks?

I've been around guns and shooting for thirty+ years and other than some military experience, have never seen a blank. Can you buy them at the average gun store? No.

If her story is to be believed, sounds to me like he was looking for the way out and wanted her to live with the guilt/pain/etc.

I can't buy blanks at the gun store. I have to go to the hardware store for those. .22 blanks are used in some nail guns.

That being said, the story makes little sense to me.

Hell of a way to check and see if it is loaded.

All guns are always loaded.

How can I check an unloaded firearm in my checked baggage at the airport?

What if the TSA asks me "Is the firearm loaded?"

How do you safely clean a glock? or any gun for that matter?

Or walk down range to change a target when a cold range is called?

How do you safely enter a gun store (all those loaded hand guns in the display cases are usually pointed muzzle outwards)?

I used to live in Omaha, across the river from CB. Not saying everyone is like this, but let's just say that a rather large percentage of people over there aren't terribly 'with it', as my mom used to say.

And when was the last time you had a box of blanks?

I have a box of blanks, but I don't know why. I never use them. They seem to be pointless for me.
A hunting dog trainer I know uses a .38 revolver and blanks to stop the dogs from being gun-shy.

Sounds like someone trying to get away with murder. If there were no witnesses I would be scrubbing his hands for powder residue. If he did in fact shoot the gun then her story checks out but it is still stupid.

A tragedy, over which any further speculation as to motive, circumstances, or capacity would clearly be inappropriate.
