I have been watching this show, there are a lot of things they are doing, I didn't expect a tv show to do, that generally adds to the grim reality of what that situation would be like.....EXCEPT GUNS!. For those of you not following it, it is a show that takes "Survivors" of an epidemic and puts them in a situation without government, Food, Water, and basic amenities, etc. They are located in an abandoned town from Hurricane Katrina. There are rival groups, looting, and other realistic survival situations. The show mixes in a kind of survival "junk yard wars" that makes it interesting. However, the lack of factoring in arming oneself has made the whole thing lack a very large bit of reality (IMO).
As real and as harsh as they are trying to make it, it seems the whole situation would be dramatically changed (Good and Bad) with the more realistic addition of firearms (at least simulated so as not to kill anyone, think "Special Ops Mission" & Simunition). Also the lack of a hunting firearm also makes their hunting expeditions more like a trip into the stone age.
My take away so far has been, producing electricity to utilize tools and having a firearm may be the largest survival aids needed for a long term situation. Your thoughts?
