I have been watching this show, there are a lot of things they are doing, I didn't expect a tv show to do, that generally adds to the grim reality of what that situation would be like.....EXCEPT GUNS!. For those of you not following it, it is a show that takes "Survivors" of an epidemic and puts them in a situation without government, Food, Water, and basic amenities, etc. They are located in an abandoned town from Hurricane Katrina. There are rival groups, looting, and other realistic survival situations. The show mixes in a kind of survival "junk yard wars" that makes it interesting. However, the lack of factoring in arming oneself has made the whole thing lack a very large bit of reality (IMO).

As real and as harsh as they are trying to make it, it seems the whole situation would be dramatically changed (Good and Bad) with the more realistic addition of firearms (at least simulated so as not to kill anyone, think "Special Ops Mission" & Simunition). Also the lack of a hunting firearm also makes their hunting expeditions more like a trip into the stone age.

My take away so far has been, producing electricity to utilize tools and having a firearm may be the largest survival aids needed for a long term situation. Your thoughts?

I agree. I saw a few episodes when it first came out, thinking it might be pretty interesting to see how SHTF survival might work in real life. But it's obvious that the producers cannot handle reality and thus designed the show to ignore vast parts of what really happens in a disaster such as that. I guess I should know not to expect too much from liberal tv producers. Any real group of bad guys who felt like killing "the colony" and stealing their stuff could pull it off in about 10 minutes.

The siren of doom sounds, the end of the world is upon you. Only moments, to grab those few items, that could mean life or death in the days ahead. Quickly now, slip into your sandals and don your tied dye shirt. You may have to start a new world, train new minds, stuff a few "save the whales" bumber stickers in your pocket. Medical supplies might be crucial, put the bong in the backpack. A hackey sack in case you have to interface with other cultures. Fill the boda bag with boones farm, grab the guitar, you are ready, to join the colony, and face, whatever, the apocalypse throws at you.
Silly me, i just have some ol web gear, an army rangers manual, and an m-14. Thank the maker there are such fine, informative shows on TV.

This is not a television discussion forum or a survival forum.

I think this particularly show was summed up well enough in another thread where someone said, "Face it folks, you can't show your 'cast' popping off live rounds at people".
